I think this is all a moot point anyway. The Fremantle list management have clearly demonstrated over many years now that the origin of a player is of very low relevance to them when it comes to picking players. Lots of people seem to think picking Cerra was a mistake (not saying you do at all btw). I don’t think it was mistake and in fact it was a great example of identifying a player probably in the top 3 in the pool in terms of talent with a pick 5. For all the talk of Naughton, he was utterly anonymous in the biggest game of his career last Saturday and has plenty of major flaws in his game to improve on such as set shot goal kicking, while Oscar Allen has had a pretty ordinary season too this year. I feel like Cerra will have a better career than both in the long run. It’s clear to me that he came under enormous pressure from his girlfriend especially and family to leave. Pav basically said he didn’t want to leave but was influenced by his family. It’s bad luck for us, but we will get decent draft capital to replace him. It’s not going to stop the club selecting a VM player in future, not should it.fu** me. You write a post, people manipulate it into saying something different and then we get a long thread of mostly meaningless drivel.
There was only one point. We don't have any Vic Metro players on our list except mature age recruits and Brayshaw (who has family in WA).
Therefore claiming we are good at retaining Vic Metro players isn't really based on reality. Meanwhile we've been very good at retaining players from Vic Country (and SA, TAS etc) - even if they lived relatively close to Melbourne. It also highlights we seem to generally avoid drafting Vic Metro players - given that the number on our list is nowhere near the proportion that are in each draft.
On a side note the Rockingham comparison is interesting because I would 100% expect the average kid from Rockingham to not need to cling on to their mother's teat far more than the average private school kid from metro Perth. There are always exceptions but the resilience people get growing up in outer suburbs is one of the few advantages they get in life.
