News Pick 54: James Sellar

I dont understand why so negative, we were told the draft was shallow and we got Clark, 2 young exciting rookies and a player that's arguably as good as the ones we lost (Warnock and Marric). Warnock always proved to be a handy inclusion if we had injuries and it seems we have addressed that issue with Sellar, he may turn out to be a great player for us and the whole "he' a spud" mentality is getting rather old.

He didn't set the world on fire at Adelaide but he is not alone, maybe a 2nd chance and some good games in the 2nds will lift the players mentality of getting a game no matter what.

If you watched the Carlton game this year then we have vastly difference undestandings of the phrase always proved to be a handy inclusion.

The issue here is whenever the draft the picks are still important and the more of them you treat like gold the more likely it is you will strike it. And the end of the day I'm not too upset, because yes we could have just had 2 picks like some other clubs did. But adding a list clogger after years of removing them seems a bit counterproductive, hopefully Neeld gets something from him.

oh ye play him as a ruckmen in a team with jamar, clark, and martin. please.

I would not be disappointed at all by this pick. Jimmy was let go to early in my opinion by the Crows and definitely could hold down a key defensive role if given the chance. He works incredibly hard at his game and I have seen him countless times training by himself with coaches after most have gone back to the locker room.

He is not a ruckman, despite playing the role for Glenelg and Adelaide at times. Hopefully he gets a chance to show everyone his real potential in a key position post.

He was pick 14 as an underage player and is probably just about to reach his football prime.

I would not be surprised in a years time if you look back at what a steal this pick turns out to be. :thumbsu:

Who knows with Jimmy Sellar, he might turn out to better than Kurt Tippet or turn out useless like Juice Newton. If he does turn out to be better than tippet than we got ourselves a bargin. So im gonna wait till the end of next season to make any judgment because I BLEED RED & BLUE

He defin. won't get a game in the ruck.

Interesting to see Neeld's view how to play Sellar. def or fwd?

We got badly exposed on Queen's birthday with 2 big key forwards against Frawley so Neeld might see a need to plug a hole there.

Cloke, Dawes.
Rough, Buddy.
Hawkins, pods.
Kennedy, Lynch.
kozzie, Roo.

Some of those combos are better then others but the finals teams all had 2 big boys which in my opinion would cause Rivers all sorts of problems.

Maybe he wants the 2 boppers of Mitch Clark and James Sellar? I think Sellar will push forward.

Not too disappointed at this - pick 54 in a completely mined draft. I wouldn't expect much to come from this. Good to get a strong body to help out the forward line though, even if just as a foil.

Im surprised in that he was surely going to be there in the rookie draft.

I can understand the concept of Neeld wanting to keep he pressure on our young KPPs - he cant threaten to drop them if there is no-one else to pick..

I'm assuming we took him in the ND rather than RD because Neeld wants him to play Round 1 while also having the option of promoting Nicholson or Evans.

It isn't that we want him on the list to develop, it's that we have a specific role in mind and we're going to force McDonal and Davis and Cook to earn their spots, rather than "pump games into the kids".

tbh when I looked through the list of delisted players who might be a chance, Sellar is the one I would have plumbed for. I think he'll prove a very valuable acquisition.

When Leigh Brown was recruited 99% of Collingwood fans on our boards were completely mystified by the decision and it was all quite embarrassing for everyone to look back at that initial reaction. Obviously that worked out well, with every team now trying to get a guy who can play the 'Leigh Brown role'.

I'm not saying Seller will do what Brown did, but it's always hard to judge even if a player has a long history of not doing much exciting at another club under different conditions. Neil Craig knows what to expect from him which is a pretty good sign I reckon. Maybe Neeld thinks he can do a Malthouse with Seller and turn his career around? I think it's a decent move in a very weak draft and only time will tell I suppose.

He hasn't cost you much, and there really wasn't much available at that pick - besides the guy we picked up who will obviously be a gun because I'm completely unbiased etc ;)

Just thought I'd point out that his last month in the SANFL this year was very good, probably the best in all his time on the list. Once Kris Massie took over mid-season, he played him full time at CHB rather than the forward/ruck/bench role that the previous coach had used him in.

He could end up alright if he is given a role and given time to get used to it. The way we used him was completely ******ed and I hope we don't end up doing the same thing to McKernan.

Mate, I will do my best. BTW, I hereby ban Judas Pride, otherwise known as Lex Luthor, from the Demons Board.

nah, I am not going to push my luck. And yes Lionel Luthor is the one and only celtic pride, go figure.

Sorry to intrude on your board guys, but i was dissapointed Collingwood didn't recruit Sellar.Given the cahnce at Melbourne he will surprise.

I don't reckon he got a fair go at Adelaide, becuause of injuiries killed his career there.

He is a big bodied CHF not a ruckman. Can pinch hit but when fit he is a bullocking forward prospect. He will compliment Mitch Clarke and help the development of Jack Watts

He is yet to prove himself but by memory he was recruited by Adelaide at pick 12.

All i can say that the game i saw him play when he was fit was against Collingwood a few yaers ago and he tore us a new one.
Strong solid prospect Neeld along with Craig will get the best out of him.

Good pick up by the Dees.See how he goes next year.

Simillarity when fit he can end up being like David Neitz !

Hey guys, I would be really happy if i was you. I rate Sellar and as many have said, we got rid of him to early. As daics said above he kicked 5 in a ps game against Collingwood and has shown he would be more than capable of holding down CHB.( I personally rate him ahead of McKernan as a defender but not quite as good forward) He is the type of guy who improves with each consecutive game he plays, hence some of the confidence comments on here, which are well founded I believe. One thing you will love about him is his work off the ball, he loves to throw his big frame around shepherding and has a great ability to get in a spoil. (at training drills he was the most effective defender after Rutten and Davis at getting spoils in, ahead of Luke Thompson, Talia and McKernan) Once settled into the side you will see more linking and run from him. Don't be suprised if he and Frawley are your defensive spine by years end. (his last 5 games at CHB for my beloved Bays were really good.)
His biggest weakness is his turning circle but his straight line speed is good. Well done Dees, might even have to watch a few games more of you this year.:p He is a very loyal bloke btw, and the early issues in his career are behind him.

This isn't bad for Melbourne. Out of all the guys we delisted, Sellar probably had the most potential. He's only 23 and he's had experience playing all over the ground.

I wouldn't say the Crows were wrong to delist him though. He had 5 years on our list and never really slotted into a permanent position anywhere. Hopefully at Melbourne he'l get some game time and confidence.

As a player hes not lacking in skills but he just doesnt back himself enough in contests. Also not strong enough in the air. He has this tendency of fisting the ball away even when theres a decent marking opportunity. Hopefully Melbourne can stamp out things like this. I wouldnt be at all surprised if he turns out to be a very handy player.

He's 23 and has never really done anything. Polished off a couple of scraps during our late 2009 surge, as several did. Melbourne might be able to squeeze a serviceable 30 or 40 games out of him, which is more than he would probably have nabbed with us. Good for him.

Can't say I'm really impressed with this selection but I'm happy to be proven wrong. I think he is currently insurance as a KPD for Frawley, Garland & Rivers. I can't see him playing fwd. We don't have the best record picking up ex crows, Meesen, Collins, Vardy & Pesch!

I can only think of Ingerson who has been of any value

I watched every game and I agree, but that game I saw at least 10 players who deserved to spend the following week with Casey.

Still his presence there was enough to say if you don't preform then there are some other blokes who we will play instead. Stellar will probably play that role initially and who knows could develop into a solid player, as previously stated i'll reserve judgement till next year.

All I can hope is that he is fit and hungry and has a full preseason, then we'll see if its a good idea or not

I understand why you delisted him if you thought he wouldn't cut it a forward, you've got much better options in Tippett, McKernan and Walker, but he might heve been an option for your backline after losing Davis. But then you did bring in Lewis Johnston.

I'm worry that down back he'll provide a contest in the air but won't give any run and will be old fashioned when the ball hits the deck. Maybe we can lighten him off a little which could help his mobility at CHB.
