Seeing that Gather Round (Round 5) is on this week in Adelaide, what better time to acknowledge the history & traditions of SA football to select the best 23 players to come from that State-and whether they have played in the SANFL, Crows/Power in the AFL or represented their state in either interstate or State of Origin.

The criteria for selection to be picked in the all-time SA team is as follows:

-Must have played in the SANFL from 1970-90;
-Must have played for either the Adelaide Crows or Port Adelaide Power or to have been recruited to a VFL club (ie Carlton) from SA
-Must have represented South Australia in interstate/State of Origin football
-Must have won one or more Magarey Medals

The team itself should consist of the following:
-Starting 18
-4 interchange plus one as the sub (as per AFL rules);
-One coach (ie Fos Williams, Neil Kerley);
-One captain (ie Russell Ebert, Chris McDermott);
-One Umpire (ie Laurie Argent, Murray Ducker)
-One administrator (ie Max Basheer, Leigh Whicker)

Why only after 1970?
Those years (1970-1990) were the glory days of the SANFL and SA football in general before the intro of the Adelaide Crows. Think of legendary players who have dominated SA football like Robran, Ebert, Blight, Carey, Cornes, McIntosh and Kernahan; SA's great wins over Victoria in State of Origin at Football Park; and outstanding grand finals like Glenelg v North 1973, Norwood v Sturt 1978 and Port v Norwood 1984.

They were the glory days of football australia wide. But the reality is all leagues had many great players before then. Anyway its your post and your rules.

Bruce Lindsay played for West Torrens and was 178cm. No way he plays at CHB. Swap him and Phillips.

Salisbury and Parker dubious. Carey was a massive fat lump.

Being South Australian we traditionally named sides starting with the FF line, don't know why, but even in my school footy days !!

FF: A. Modra (West Adel/Adel/Fre) T Evans (Port - SANFL, Gee) R Davies (Sturt, Haw)
HF: M. Blight (Wood/NM) S Kernahan (Glen, Carl) D Jarman (North Adel, Haw, Adel)
C: M. Ricciuto (West Adel/Adel) R. Ebert (Port-SANFL, NM) C. Bradley (Port-SANFL, Carl)
HB: C. Enright (Port-SANFL, Gee) G. Phillips (Port-SANFL, Coll) B. Hart (North Adel, Ade)
FB: G. Wanganeen (Port-SANFL, Ess, Port-AFL) B Hammond (North Adel) M Taylor (Norwood / Coll)
R: S. Rehn (West Adel/Adel) B Robran (North Adel) J Platten (CD / Haw)

Int: M Pavlich (WWT / Freo) M Naley (South Adel / Carl) M Aish (Norwood) W Tredrea (Port-SANFL/AFL)

Sub: L Neale (Glen / Freo / Bri)

Coach: G Cornes / J Cahill

Captain: Ebert

Umpire: Rick Kinnear

Admin: Max Basheer

If you want to put in a commentator to compliment the SA all-time team, the candidates could be Ian Day, David Darcy, Ken 'KG' Cunningham, Daryl Hicks, Peter Marker, Kym Dillon, Wally May.

Geez mate, you not only missed the best one but you included Dillon? Seriously?

Enright would be one of the best mid defenders to have played I would have thought, as strong a defender as any but with a good attacking element to his game, think he’d get a gig.

332 games
3 flags
2 B&Fs (both flag years) - top 5 9 times that I can find
6 All-Australian

Michael Aish wouldn't have made much of a difference at Richmond, considering how bad the Tigers were in the mid 1980s.

Sure, but during those desperate times straws were clutched.

I distinctly recall one pre-season match involving Norwood where he won the TV for BOG and him saying that he would be over soon to begin training with Richmond and my hopes just rose (God, I can visualise a still of it in my mind - 40 years on - although I doubt if the TV footage survives).

Sigh....

You knew the Port magpies team of the 1980s to the early 1990s.

There's one port Adelaide magpies bloke that should be on the full back or Centre half back spot.

He was the number 1 pick in 1986. He didn't leave the port magpies until he got a premiership medal in 1988.

Yep... I am talking about Martin Leslie

Completely agree. I'd take him over Parker, Salisbury or Lindsay.

Michael Aish was class. Used to dominate in state games.

This SA team is hard to pick. Going to be about 10 very unlucky champions.

Names like this come straight off your head:

Robran, Ebert, Kernahan, Platten, Bradley, Wanganeen, Motley, McIntosh, Blight, Jarman, Hodges, Aish, Bagshaw.
