I agree with the 'puzzling' comment.

To me MacDonald was the perfect depth bowler, which is what I thought all the Tassie coaching staff were keen for. While he wasn't the biggest wicket taker, he could at least keep it tight and keep the pressure on the batsmen.

I think Rogers will make a fantastic domestic player. His debut in the T20 looked all class, and he is just the sort of guy we need in the system.

Definately puzzling.

Whether or not chopping MacDonald turns out to be a good decision or not probably depends on the fitness of Griffith and Denton. If they can stay fit he wouldn't be required. Big IF but. In the end probably came down to one of Drew, Maher and MacDonald leaving and they let him go. Much of a muchness really.

Bailey, Cowan, Doolan, Marsh and MacDonald were the only ones to play more than 7 in the shield so finishing 5th in the shield player of the year means jack. Terrible journalism really.

Given how shit the batting is, Rogers being let go is a surprise.

Dighton given the chop, McDonald retained:

Obviously, Dighton will still be considered for T20 and perhaps Ford Ranger games.

The squad has too many bowlers in my opinion...

Ricky Ponting (CA)
Steven Cazzulino
Tim Paine (CA)
Travis Birt
George Bailey
Ed Cowan
Jon Wells
Rhett Lockyear
Alex Doolan

James Faulkner
Luke Butterworth

Xavier Doherty
Jason Krejza

Brendan Drew
Brett Geeves,
Adam Griffith
Ben Hilfenhaus (CA)
Tim Macdonald
Adam Maher
Gerard Denton

Rookies Matthew Day, Brady Jones, Hamish Kingston, Jeremy Smith, Tom Triffitt.

I certainly hope Cazzulino can play. Otherwise without Marsh and Dighton (in the one dayers), the batting is worse than last year

Brady Jones showed the ability 2 seasons ago at club level as a capable batsman.. he may be able to take the next step this season and push his case as a batsman when tim paine is available if the top order are failing, much as matt wade did (for one OD game) a few years ago

Heard that Tassie yesterday signed Mark Cosgrove. Originally they werent after him but i guess after no one else showing any interest he has signed with the Tigers for a minimum deal.
Will be a good signing if they can keep him away from the colonel.

At his best he would be up there with Bailey as the best batsman.

SA gave him a kick in the arse a few times and he has only got bigger and bigger. If it's true you hope they don't make any compromises with him.

Final squad. Cosgrove signed up, Rana potentially playing other formats.

Nice work signing Cosgrove. I wouldn't have even considered getting rid of him, he didn't have his best season yet still averaged over 40. I've long maintained his size doesn't affect his performances, so just show confidence in him and rate him on his performances not appearance. Something the SACA didn't always seem able to do....

Can't say I know a great deal about Tasmanian cricket, so what is your opening situation looking like? Obviously Cowan had a great year, but does he have a set partner? Because Cosgrove's best position is as an opener, it is where he played for Australia after all.

In the 4 dayers it was Cowan as one opener, partnered with either Wells or Lockyear.

In the shorter formats obviously Paine opens up and he usually did so with Dighton who hasn't had his contract renewed.

So there is an openers spot available in both formats.

I doubt he would open in FC cricket though, more likely to slot in at #5 I think. With Bailey, Birt and Cowan batting in the middle order in the one dayers, perhaps he could be a viable option to open in the ford ranger and twenty20.

Won't come with any fanfare but handy enough signing in a similar mould to rana.

+Paine, Lockyear, Cosgrove, Bailey, Birt, ten Doeschate, Naved-ul-hasan, Krejza, Geeves, Doherty, Denton.

Looks very competitive for T20.

Colt hero! Absolute legend of the Netherlands team. I am sooooooo pumped by this! Handy player.

He is a freaking jet.

Believe me. That's a fair pick up!

A few updates:

Tigers recruit Kruger from QLD? - http://www.themercury.com.au/article/2010/09/11/172201_sport-news.html

New recruit spanks century (Cazzulino) - http://www.themercury.com.au/article/2010/09/29/175735_sport-news.html

It seems that the Tigers are alot fitter injury wise now and have more depth: should be in for a good year!

hot dish read the Kruger article, he's not bee recruited he's made his own decision to make the move to Hobart and has not got a State contract.

That will have the pressure on Wells to find consistency however.

I'm sure he's been in contact with coach Coyle and/or cricket Tas admin to suss out whether its a good option. While they can't provide him with a contract i'm quite sure that if he has moved down south, that he'd be definately training with the Tigers and will soon enough get a game with the 2nd XI...

There will be great competition for the 2nd openers spot this year - Tas may even opt to go with Cosgrove if they get desperate.

Hopefully Birt rejuvinates his shield career...
