Re: Your Geelong player nicknames

Varcoe- Donny (pure filmbuff rhyming slang here, but many people might not realise, and think it means something else. Therefore only used among those in the know)

:DDonnie Varcoe - you saying the no. 5 jumper he wears has some sort of supernatural power? Bloody hell, I'd believe it:thumbsu:

THIS:thumbsu: That's the funniest bloody nickname of 'em all, witsend!

Tx...me and my daughter and sister have been trying to get it to stick at games!!!
Definite man crush on the Rookie Monster!

Re: Your Geelong player nicknames

Here's a few I've thrown out there over the years.

For Gary Ablett Jnr I've often liked G2 ( Gary 2 as in T2- Terminator 2)
For that matter I've liked referring to him as "Sequel"
For that matter I've always thought it could have great marketing potential to have G2 on the back of Cats jumpers (as an alternative to 29)

For Jimmy Bartel, I've often observed how much he can look like a young Elvis, so have been known to call him "Elvis" or "The King".
And just on that, on the frequent occasions that Jimmy sports the bearded look I refer to him as Charro (the name/character from an Elvis film - a western- of the late sixties, where Elvis had a beard)
I also like to go with JB, particularly when he does something good as in in "JB, you've done it again" (some will know it refers to the music retailer advertising).
And sometimes, to take the piss I like to call him James Bartels just to make reference to the many mistake/variations he has had.

Have been known to call to cry "No tricks Hogan" to Simon Hogan (it's a regular line from Colonel Clink to Hogan in "Hogans Heroes"). In particular if I want him to dispose of the ball with the first option.

I like to sometimes say "Rookie the Wookie" given his ferocious hairy presence (think Chewbacca from Star Wars).

Have been known to refer to Harley as "The Hog" (a nickname for Harleys).

Also one who refers to Joel Selwood as "The Timber Merchant".

He's no longer with as of course but with Tenace I'd often say "Kane not Able" (a reference to his performance) or I also liked to pronounce his name in more an Italian style as in (phonetically) Ten-archie.

Also have been known to refer to Ling as Clang (it's a reference to 2 characters from 70's kids show H R Puff'n'stuff called Cling and Clang)

I too have like referring to Steve Johnson as "Magic" Johnson.

Re: Nicknames

Byrnes - Watching the qualifying final, there was that passage of play where Shannon scooped it up one handed on defensive fifty, turned his opponent inside out, and went streaking down the wing. As the cheering turned to increasingly desperate shouts of 'KICK IT! KICK IT!' two thoughts occurred to me in close succession:

a) he's going to **** this up

b) that would be vintage Shannon - does something good, gets ambitious and undoes all his own hard work

Sure enough he sells someone into trouble and we eventually get done for holding the ball. Shot off a message to my mate saying 'Just had a moment of vintage Shannon' and it became the phrase of the finals. When he was hopeless early in the GF instantly got a message - 'vintage'. He turns Raph Clarke inside out in the last and I replied that it was 'vintage Geelong.' So Shannon is now 'vintage'.

Very coincidentally our family started calling him Vintage around mid-season - it just goes to show how appropriate it is!

Before that we used to run with The Hesitator - for obvious reasons!

Re: Player Nicknames?

The Hawks' fans in my neck of the Great Southern Stand at That Game (the most recent edition) were calling Gaz "Gold Coast Gary" every time he came within coo-ee of the ball.

I think they eventually got frustrated by all the Catters sitting nearby just quietly nodding their heads in agreement.

Re: Player Nicknames?

My son and I call Matthew Scarlett 'Captain' after this guy:

Re: Player Nicknames?

My mates and I all refer to Varcoe as T-Vac, Started in 08... the prelim against the doggies... 5 of us watching the game, 4 who are cats fans and 1 bomber who rather than risk a beating stirring us jumped on and picked Trav as 'His Boy' and proceeded to jump up and down and carry on every time he did something...

2 years on and it has stuck with our group... and he is still 'Your boy T-Vac' when watching with my housemate :thumbsu:

GFC nickname registry

Hi guys

Just a suggestion to help those like myself who arent privvy to all the info/goss etc of the more personal side of the cats players, whatever those reasons may be, to have a registry or reference page to be able to call on without having to derail or go off topic in a thread to ask who the individual in question is when being referred to by their nickname.

Being from SA, all you hear about all year is the crows and port, and whoever theyre playing against on any particular week. But even then its just about how the local team in question can beat their opponent, rather than any useful info that a fan of the non local team might benefit from.

I find that reading threads that refer to players by their nickname sometimes quite difficult to follow when im not sure who is exactly in question. Since nearly all of my knowledge is gained from reading this thread, coupled with my own observations from my limited opportunities to watch them play on tv, sometimes its just a bit hard to follow everything i like to whilst appreciating all the great info that the more knowledgable on this forum can share.

I've never heard anyone other than teammates call Tom Lonergan "Domsey", but that's my favourite. I get the derivation.

I don't. I have never understood that one. Can someone fill me in on that?

I wonder if Cam Guthrie gets called Arlo?
