Did you even read it before you assumed it was misspelled?Would have been good if you used ACTUAL players names in your "mock up" Although there is no "Trengrove" who plays for Melbourne your point is taken.
Again, if you want a name on your jumper get the club to heat press one on.
Issue solved.
The lazy side of me loves the idea but despite winning most battles, it loses this time.
Not being spoon-fed information means that if I want to know who a player is, I learn who a player is. Which means I actually remember the player for something specific, something worth remembering them for. I actually know who the player is. I feel like I have some right to judge their ability.
With names on the back all that is shat on. I would be able to see a player do something, see who it is and judge them. Can you imagine BigFooty if it were so easy to identify players?
Plus it individualises players too much. This is a team sport with 22 players per team, per game. You can't tear a game apart in the AFL the same as someone can tear apart an NBA game.
Plus all that other stuff people said before me.
People look far too into it. Information on players is spoon-fed to almost anyone. Papers, News, internet, forums, commentators, etc etc all spoon feed information to people.
I don't see how you can possibly judge a player differently because you find out their name easier. For starters if you're watching a game on tele then the commentators will more times than not say his name and if you are at the game then the AFL record is there to find out who it is.
At a guess i would say BigFooty would be exactly the same.
Plenty of team sports have names on their back. Works fine for them. Individuals already get recognised in our game so no difference.
That makes no sense. The sentimental value in handing down a jumper number to a younger player doesn't change even if the player's name is also on the jumper.
Having another players name that isn't Hird on the number 5 jumper wouldn't change anything. It's still the number 5 Essendon jumper...
The AFL is not comparable to the NBA or NFL in merchandise sales in any way shape or form. Even if the sports aren't global, the sales are. The most nondescript NBA and NFL teams probably make as much in jersey sales by themselves as the entire AFL combined. I'm generalising, but I'd imagine that the majority of people who have rushed out and bought a Lin jersey also have some assortment of Griffin/James/Garnett/Wade/Howard/Durant/Bryant/Nash/Rose/Nowitzki/Jordan jerseys all in their wardrobe too. Now, how many AFL supporters would buy guernseys of star players from an assortment of clubs like that? What does that tell you? The USA has 28 states which are not represented in the NBA and 29 which are not represented by the NFL. The NBA and NFL are about the star players; the AFL is about the teams.
great idea. it'll speed up the identification of players for new fans of the sport, and for kids.
Imagine buying an opposition jumper like Hird for example. He retires and you then have the jumper of Stanton..
Dont have to imagine, its been happening forever, dont know anyone who has had a problem with it.
What happens if you have WCE Judd number 3 jumper and he leaves? Imagine walking around with Judd on your back.
The only people that want this are probably all 12 anyway and think it's "cool". Go spend your money on trading cards or something.
Please. Just because people aren't afraid of change doesn't mean they are 12 and think it is "cool". That's just a rubbish call.
If i buy a jumper that has a number on the back it is because of the player. If that player leaves or retire and someone else takes over that number i would rather keep the name. So yes, if i had a Judd number 3 when he left then i would want to keep it. Same thing happens in the NBA when their players get traded.
