Haha, I'm sorry, but wherever you're getting this is way off.

"Tone" as you call it, is definition. Definition is caused by low body fat. It has absolutely nothing to do with different types of muscle, whatever that is.

So no, lower body fat doesn't "= strength", at all.

Strength is strength.

Size doesn't automatically "= strength" either, it's just very often a byproduct. On top of that, having more weight behind you allows you to exert more force, in a nutshell.

I also laugh at those calling Hurley fat.

I'm glad to find that somebody posted this.

tone (plural tones)

1.(music) A specific pitch.
2.(music) (in the diatonic scale) An interval of a major second.
3. The 2010 buzz word of the uneducated and unaware of the fitness world.

4. Word used by some female fitness enthusiasts when lifting weights is suggested. "I don't want to get bulky, I just want to get toned"

Koby is a big lad

yeah true, you don't want a side of massive unite, they will have rings run around them, especially by quick sides like Carlton, WCEs and Freo and especially on the big grounds and etihad. Also a good way of increasing injury proneness. Players have generally lost a fair bit of weight by round 5ish. Preseason is all about getting as fit as you can, fitter than you need to be so you can maintain it during the season and can still play well after losing a bit of fittness. You'd be hoping these big guys can run and train hard without wearing out and needing extra recovery time.

Got a triple premiership side that might disagree with you.

From following the training reports at Freo it doesn't seem that Ross Lyon is focusing on size. We see to be looking at endurance and core strength. Don't think many of our guys will be looking huge - in fact some have dropped weight. I expect a running game that would serve us well at Subi but may be short of the mark in Melbourne in winter (or finals if we make it) against the strong teams.

Everyone posting in this thread surely realises it doesn't matter if it looks like they have put on a stack of muscle? When the season starts the bulk drops off and they can't maintain all the muscle they put on in the pre-season because of all the recovery time they need. Happens every year...It's interesting to see how much the body shape of 1st-4th years change but after that it's usually only tiny differences.

Spot on.

Just on the too much weight effecting hammys, I am no expert but struggled for years with hammy tears and had tried everything. Finally a physio who works closely with the lions instructed me to lose my bulk. I went from being a 90Kg mid to an 82kg mid and went from tearing hammys every year for 6 years, to tearing 1 in the last 3 years which was only minor.

His explanation was that whilst the bulk was not the cause it certainly wasnt helping by adding more pressure to the hammy and surrounding areas. Makes sense when you think about it.

It's not just hammies - all your lower extremities are under extra strain when they have to support more weight.

One of Australia's leading sports scientists & one of Australia's most highly regarded strength and fitness gurus need to be sacked.

They must make way for the BF gurus who clearly know more then them on the subject. :thumbsu:

Appears to be less ACL's done these days too, perhaps for the same reason.

I remember a few years back there was about 7 or 8 done in the pre-season alone.

It's all very well to bulk up the muscles but you can't muscle up an ACL to cover for the increased size your knee has to cope with.

Hurley is too big to remain uninjured, but Gumbleton, who's always had a lean build, is in perfect shape and won't ever have an issue.
cf Watson vs Winderlich as well.

bf knows all.

Need to do the leg work to strengthen the muscles around your knee to cope with the increased load.

Wouldn't mind knowing what Geelong's unjury tolls were like before and after Robinson arrived at the club.

Obviously they must have suffered heaps more injuries after he arrived at the club, given that he is using the same model for us that he used at Geelong, and given that the BF gurus have advised that what he is doing with us is just going to lead to more injuries.

In 2011
Winderlich - Knee
Dempsey - Knee
Prismall - Knee
Colyer - Ankle
Hooker, Watson - 2 Hamstrings
Gumby - everything

Out of all these Watson was the only Big unit, the rest are what BF are saying is the perfect body type.

Would have been an excellent burn if it wasn't for the fact Hurley gets injured every other week.
