So you think it's OK for activists to hinder the work of firefighters attempting to minimise the risk to people, livestock, wildlife and public and private assets. OK.

If no activist had "hindered the work of firefighters" how much do you reckon these fires would've been reduced by? 50% , 95% or 99%? Give me your estimate.

Not at all.

How about the Governments have a clear policy on land management. This is the perfect time given the fires are fresh in people's minds as need to be proactive.

The Aborigines used to always burn to manage fire risk, so wouldnt harm to consult with them how to minimise the risk.

Need to ask an expert, but we should be doing everything to minimise the bushfire risk.

Your ABC taxpayer money at work.

ABC Gippsland give the "activists" plenty of coverage when they stop 2 planned burns in the Nowa Nowa area eventually only burning 9 hectares of a planned 370 hectare reduction burn. Of course they've deleted both stories off their Facebook page when someone linked to the stories on Social Media recently.

Of course not but stop the diversions of the real problem and how we are going to tackle it.

We need leadership and all we all have is cowardice from the PM.

Not sure that helps the Eastern States in the short term, then again after these fires there will be bugger all left to burn. Who knows we get a cyclone then nothing after that?

You still need to deal with the bigger issue but you can’t see that, can you?

Go back to reading that rag, The Australian. Go back to where you feel comfortable.

And you go back to your fantasies where Australia can have a significant impact on any of your 'climate change' ideology even if China, India and the USA were to come to the party as well which they are increasingly showing very little interest in doing so. Even if Australia reduce our greenhouse emissions to zero it will make little difference to our climate. Even you should be aware that until the big 3 buy in it's an exercise in futility and that's without factoring in the UN have recently predicted there will be 2 billion more people walking the Earth all looking for their slice of the pie with regards to lifestyle and modern living standardsetc.

Meanwhile half my established native plants have died in December. Looking forward to January and February :(

Meanwhile we continue to build piece of shit inefficient buildings that demand a huge amount of energy. High energy efficiency ratings should be legislated and enforced. This won't happen as powerful developers and builders will lose profits and lobby their arses off.

You have to have someone to lead, we have got no-one in power to lead. I’m not even sure what SmoCo is, think a coward is a more appropriate word for him. He runs away at first opportunity. You need to take action, you need to start. Doing nothing is not an option.

Scotty from Marketing, SmoCo will be the new trend words/phrases for 2020.

Mate we have around a half dozen new building estates going up around Ballarat and none of them have a yard big enough to swing a cat in and certainly no room for the old hills hoist so the heavy energy consuming clothes dryers are in heavy use, most of the new homes here have no verandas or even eaves probably because the blocks being built on are too narrow thus less living space = more sun on the walls. All have air conditioners as standard, mostly the reverse cycle type though a few have gone with the less energy consuming evaporative units. No yard for the kids to get active in like previous generations instead inside on their play stations or X Boxes etc. The line up of mothers in their SUV's outside the schools to pick the kids up is almost endless these days even the older ones who should be capable of either walking or riding a bike like past generations. Humans are becoming their own worst enemies in many regards these days.

No disagreement from me on that but unlike you I'm not certain battery storage is ever going to be the absolute solution to a reliable baseload source in times of sustained demand. The World needs to find a clean baseload solution IMO that can be switched on and off almost instantaneously when wind and solar and other renewable sources just can't supply the required energy.
So now you have me confused, just a few short days ago, you were agreeing that we require “clean” baseload energy in support of renewables.
Why do we need “clean”?

And then we get this below, a crack at “climate change ideology”.....umm it’s science my friend.
Even your friends at the minerals council agree with the science of human “induced” (their words not mine) climate change, not even they think it’s an ideology.
Link for your troubles....

Firstly could you please explain this contradiction?
Is climate change real or do you just flip flop to be a contrarian?

Secondly....and for the third time....could you please expand on your thoughts of the current governments decision on re-opening Christmas Island (185 million) for absolutely no reason other than PR and also on water buybacks (80 million) for not a single drop of water and a likelihood there never will be?

I am particularly interested to hear how this government has made a sound investment decision on the use of public funds that improves the everyday life for all of us quiet Australians.

I also see you have had another crack today at the ABC over their use of funds, which seeing as you’re a taxpayer who is funding them you are totally within your rights to do so, but once again I’m confused.
Is outrage at mis-management of public funds only a thing reserved for political parties or organisations you’re not a fan of?

To be honest I‘ll be entirely surprised if you answer this, you haven’t for the last 2 times I’ve asked, which is very telling.......

Cheerleader.

There's literally a government Web page dedicated to how to build an efficient house. Simple things in the design stage can have big impacts that won't cost much extra.

There was a good 4 corners episode the other night about the apartment industry and how any push for tougher regulations on safe materials and better building practices have been pushed back by state governments due to the real or perceived threat to the speed of development. I'm sure the building/developers lobby had a fair bit of influence as they did in the land tax here in SA

Here are the graphs of the monthly average spot prices for SA in 2018 and 2019. December was tracking the same as November at around half the price of 2018 until we had the 4 days over 42 degrees. SA's renewable heavy grid obviously still struggles big time with extreme and sustained temperatures. Going by the forecast for the rest of the December, a simplistic estimated model predicts that December will have a slightly lower average price in 2019 ($83) than 2018 despite the record heatwave and the including the anomalous $882 day. This could change depending on how bad the heatwave gets from the 27th. I'm guessing they'll end up the same.

Average prices for 2019 were below 2018 for 7/8 months from May to November with Sept, Oct and Nov being significantly under. November was particularly good for SA prices.

View attachment 797371

I looked at the temperatures for November in 2018 and 2019 and there wasn't a huge difference. It was <1 degree cooler on average in 2019. I did a simple regression for 2019 and temperatures didn't explain the spot price very well for this month. Determinants of spot price for the milder and more stable months are probably more to do with wind, sun and demand factors rather than temperature.

December temps seem to better explain spot prices except for when they go above 40 like they did last week. Then the shit hits the fan. The average daily price went up to $882 on the 19th. I'd love to find some info on why it spiked so much given that it didn't get close the day after. I think the diesel generators might have had something to do with it.

Mean temps are on track to be slightly above 2018 due to the weather last week.

It looks like SA is starting to do quite well from renewables during the milder months with some big problems still when the temps hit above 40 for days on end. SA is lucky that our population is small and stalling as we continue to bring more renewables online. Victoria are going to struggle for a while.

I'll keep updating this throughout summer.

As promised (had a slow morning).

December spot prices for SA finished better than I thought they would considering the last heat wave was pretty bad. Ended up with a mean price of $84 for the month compared to $92 in 2018. This was despite having two 4-day 40+ degree spells, which contributed to the huge outlier of $823 on the 19th. 2018 had no consecutive 40+ days.

It looks like SA has really turned a corner. The real test will be January and February though. If we get even worse heatwaves than December, things could still get ugly.

Edit: The January forecast so far is looking pretty good thankfully

Finally something we can agree on

Apparently milk being wasted down the hill is more tragic than the loss of homes and lives according to ScoMo.

Well that was a train wreck, he looked and sounded rattled and quite obviously completely out of touch.........he needs to go.

Meanwhile there’s this from John Hewson.
