Parker won’t be captain. His leadership will be invaluable of course, but he’s not yet a north Melbourne person.
I could see him being a co captain but not a sole captain

My preference is Parker and Sheezel co captains

Jy vice

But don’t mind swapping jy and Parker

Simpkin Capt
Larkey VC
Sheezel & Xerri DVC

Transition of leadership year.
Remove Larkey and make X VC and I think you're on to something.

Doesn't matter who is in the leadership group but whoever it is need a meeting with Parker, Daniel and Darling about standards. They need to agree to a set of standards and drive enforcement of them.

If Jy and X can't do it then next year Parker takes captaincy till Sheeze is ready.

IMO Larkey isn't mentally tough enough.

Whilst disassociating and daydreaming on my long afternoon commute, during which I miraculously did not crash, I landed on Jy C and Sheezel VC, with an absolute bare-bones cabinet to support them; Larkey and Corr as vice-deputy sub-assistants. Parker to assume everyday duties without it being written in ink, along with any other players with a head for leadership who chip in on a day-to-day basis

IF the players vote again, with almost a quarter of the list new. It may get very interesting. We might have all the U/22’s voting for Sheeze.. he could very well end up Captain if he puts his hand up.. which way will the new older blokes vote?

Personally i’d rather see the coach pick the captain.. but that just isn’t the way it rolls in modern teams.

Agree, it'd be nice to see Clarko choose the captain & show some authority.

First time ive heard you question Jy. What is it you see?
I've done it before when he stopped chasing, in a G-Fri game in 2023 or 2022. Its rare imo but has happened.

What i noticed was in that last game where Hawthorn flogged us...
there was a point where X was on the ground and I didn't like Jy's response. He didn't run up to him to support him. He just looked around and yelled at some other players or Hawthorn players.

But I'm prepared to put that down to him not really knowing how to respond, given how everything was falling apart around him. I don't think many people know how to deal with those situations and i'm prepared to see if he can learn from someone like Luke Parker. Because to his credit he cracked in all game in that game and never stopped running. Even late in the game when he was cooked.

Jy got here after we lost Drew, Boomer and Spud. Altho even they couldn't stop the rot in 2016. Spitta left the next year and Taz was checked out by halfway thru his third season. The only people who have really mentored him have been JZ and Higgo, maybe Cunners. I don't think JZ understood how to deal with a crisis, Higgo certainly didn't and Cunners isn't the sort of guy who rallies the troops. In my experience you learn that stuff by seeing how other people deal with a crisis. Jy's never seen someone deal with a one successfully. He might respond well to having those older, new players around to support him.

The captain is picked in the off season. Jy always presents in great nick and trains the house down (confirmed by FOS, I think, in an interview). That's important but doesn't necessarily translate to being the best leader within games.

I think there may be issues bringing in these experienced players (all with GF history) and keeping either of these two on board as captains. One being where does the rest of the team turn to for on field game day instructions and leadership? Lmac and Jy? Or Parker, Darling and Daniel? Do we want these 3 going into their shells in case of overwriting the current leaders and not wanting to offend?

I hope the delay leans towards Parker being the man, chosen by Clarko. Undoubtedly the most credentialed and one of the most respected players in the comp and should be leading this young group on to the field for the next two seasons. Jy needs to focus on his own game.

I'd like to see Jy practice his kicking on his left. In 2024, he kicked on his left 12 times for an average of 18m distance gained.

2025 should be Jys last year as captain. He should be a stand alone captain and there after can simply focus on footy.

Great post. When you put it like that we butchered the transition of the bull elephants, to paraphrase Ross Lyon.

Explains giving Shiels 2 years too, because the body might've been giving way but he was a rare commodity in knowing how to speak up onfield.

Yeah its an interesting question DuckYeah, I don't think to much will change next yearI just hope Jy looks after himself but with the captaincy comes responsibilities and Jy is well aware of this, Luke has taken the heat off some of his players but he needs to now concentrate on his own game and get it back to where it was a few years ago, I'd be very surprised if there were any more than one or two changes, Tristan would possibly be the wildcard here, the way he played last year was outstanding just missing out on All Australian, he has shown me he has what it takes and yes I know some will say "hope he backs it up", as we get better so will Tristan, from this point on, its all about belief.
