Autopsy Poor 1st qtr effort & matchups sees Dogs lose another one to them by 13 pts

Furious. A good month structure wise, we go in with one ruck and a lack of talls and it falls apart again. It’s just past the point of obvious now. Poor Naughton, why the fu** would he want to be there?

And the players intensity in that first quarter was a deadset disgrace. We were witches hats.

It was blatantly evident tonight that Naughts need help. Another tall in the fwd line mandatory going forward.
Would help if we had a half decent tall forward on the list to help Astro other than Bruce

Funny how 2 of the best KPF's for the best part of the last decade in Hawkins and Cameron are able to get a zillion one on ones. Meanwhile we have our 22 key forward all alone with no help whatsoever drawing the entire backline to block, scrag and hold him at all times.

Maybe you have another ruck option and tell English to play forward cause he's tall and can mark a ball. Maybe it would help out the best tall we have had on our list in the past 25 years.

Bedendo and Jones are still very raw and not ready.
I thought at least one of JUH or Schache should have come in or Sweet could have stayed in.
Jj is not ready yet after injury.
Wallis is a mod turned into a forward but does at least regularly find the goals.
JJ had a tight calf in the warm up round 1. If he is not ready by round 11 cut him and pick someone up in the mid season draft.

Oh and talking of raw, what do you call McComb, Scott, Hayes, Smith etc. I’ll take a raw kid with AFL talent over 12 VFL plodders every day.

I thought our rucks and midfielders were the main problem in that 1st quarter. Geelong players were able to run into space with minimal pressure applied. It was this area of the matchups that we should have had the ascendancy but we were lazy and not prepared to run hard. Disappointing aspect of the game IMO.

Really impressed with Tim O’Brian tonight. Long periods where he single handedly saved the backline. I know he had a horrible intercept kick but he did really well otherwise.

We are ****ed when Libba goes. He’s the heart and soul and the bloke that drags us off the carpet in games like these. His old man was sitting behind us and made me laugh with a very loud “o **** right off” at the umpires at one point.

What the actual hell is the idea of 7:50pm games on a Friday night? We have 2 young kids so I never normally get the chance, plus you know Covid, but how the hell can anyone take their family when you get home at midnight? I’m never doing a Friday night again - surely they used to start at 7ish and I remember going after work when I worked in the city back in 2018?? 7:50pm just sucks!!

Last quarter showed exactly why we needed 2 rucks.

English was cooked Stanley and Blicavs taking uncontested marks.

We get within 7 points- Buku goes in there. Stanley gets it out easily. 2 goals and game over.

We needed English fresher and we needed Sweet in there smashing into Stanley. A 20 yo 190cm kid doesn’t really help much.

In retrospect that West Coast game was the worst thing that could have happened.

Excellent post

Its not just one on ones. Its the quality of the delivery they get. Our entries do none of our forwards any favours.

The worst moment of the game was Caleb shitting his pants and refusing to pick up the ball, tapping it to the goal square for an easy Cameron goal

If it was anyone else, it would be a stoppable offence
Compounded by the fact that Cameron outpaced Daniel with too much ease. Statutes behind him and got a metre in front in two steps. Why jog ??????

I thought for the most part he did well on him again tonight. The last two goals that he kicked came out of a scrabbled kick out of a pack. Luke Hodge taking a giant shit on him from the commentary box for not predicting the unpredictable was very poor form. Camerons last goal was from making a good tackle on a trapped Richards. Nothing to do with Gardner.

Gardner and Keith were fine. When... they were moved onto their logical ******* opponents late in the first.
Gardner had been going okay, but when he wasn’t caught out of position tonight, he was turning it over.

He had an absolute mare.

I have actually hated watching every match this season.

It’s so unenjoyable.

Between our poor performances, the ridiculous knee-jerk response to “umpire abuse”, the terrible commentators (Hodge, Daisy Pearce, Montagna).

I swear i’m an addict who refuses to give it up despite the fact that i get zero pleasure from it.

I actually welcome the bye week. duck footy.
This better expresses how I feel more than what I wrote. Midfield is great but bookends make the whole experience futile.

There's no chance of winning anything with the forwards and backs functioning like this.

A number of the regular issues tonight.

Our pressure, intensity and skills were deplorable and we paid the price. They only ever reached an average level and we got back into the game.

We are clearly a fwd/ruck, key defender, quick small forward and a skilled outside player with pace short of being a genuine top 4 chance. They are not on the list.

Team selection was not the issue, team set up was from the wrong defensive match ups, to starting McCrea on the bench to not having Buku up forward at the start to take pressure off Naughton. This was on Bevo.

However poor skills, decision making, lack of contest, effort and workrate is 100% on the playing group

I think Bruce & JJ can adequately fill two of those roles you listed above. Darcy will hopefully fill one of them as well.

In addition to a gun KPD, we do desperately need skilled pacy players in our forward half. We have none.

7.50 game because some network muppet is worried the ratings of Better Homes and Gardens will drop by a few points if the footy starts earlier....

I don't think this loss is on the players. There was no lack of effort. They played to the game plan, including the lunacy of our manning-the-mark strategy. We seriously got this very wrong at selection and then compounded the problems with piss poor coaching.
Disagree a little. There was a lack of effort in that 1st quarter which cost us the game. The midfield didn’t apply pressure, and some of our defensive efforts were poor. Our backline needs to be be able to break even when our midfield has a dip. Writing was on the wall when they kicked 3 from 3 inside 50s

Dont worry lets piss another game away with a ****ing idiotic team selection. Well done muppets.
Match was lost at selection no other tall forward to keep the Cats defenders accountable and they launched from there. And also our inability to kick the easy goals to put some score board pressure on just defies description
