I have a Port supporting uncle who's argued adnauseum that Port is an older club than North. It's been going on for years. Nek minnit North have "since 1869" all over our gear and Port have "since 1870", which should put that to bed but nup, he now goes with "yeah but with the same name since inception".

Oooooookkaaaaaaaaay....................Port Power!

The Dogs have stepped into the void Port left as the media darlings. I hope the same fate awaits them next season!

Gotta say, well done North. Pity we don't get to play you blokes again this year on our home deck (we rarely do, it seems). Except for Boomer, the Mickey Rooney of the AFL, you didn't have a lot of talent on the park yesterday, but you made that up with heart and grit, and made the most of your opportunities whereas we mucked up. Have got no doubt though that we'll finish higher up on the ladder than your mob. To quote your jaunty song: "Just you wait and see."

:thumbsu:

Flash in the pan.

It will be back to seat covers in a couple of years.

One of our worst losses this year was to this over-rated bunch of hacks.

Further to that ^^^^^^^^^ said uncle began this argument when I overheard him talking to someone else and saying they were the oldest Aussie Rules club in Australia.

I piped up with "the game was invented here with Geelong Grammar playing Scotch College (or whoever it was) first, and they have clubs still, then Melbourne v Geelong."

"Do you think they invented the game here on paper then waited for a club to form somewhere else you twat?"

"And, if so, wouldn't two clubs have to form at the same time in order for there to be an actual game?"

*Blank stares back at me*

It's like debating with a Donialist.

I've written a paper on the establishment of Australian Rules Football, the origins of the game lay in Victoria and funnily enough from combining rules from British rugby schools (but the Melbourne founders didn't want hacking like rugby due to injuries and no offsides as it ruined the running/exciting nature of the game) and soccer. It was a winter alternative for cricketers to remain fit. I can send a link to it if you're extremely bored.

'twas Scotch vs Melbourne Grammar.

Hannibal must have put you in a good mood that first night of this thread, shame that there are rumors that the show is getting cancelled.

I'll leave it to you to decide if I'm bored enough. Personally I think my long and illustrious posting career more than highlights the absolutely depraved levels of boredom I suffer from.

Mate, look at how much l've posted over the last two years;).
I'll give you a snippet of my literature review anyway:

Hibbins, G.M. “The Cambridge connection: the origin of Australian Rules football.” The International Journal of the History of Sport 6, no. 2 (1989): 172-192.

This article is primarily centred around the key influences on the formation of Australian Rules football during the mid to late nineteenth century in Australia, particularly in Victoria. The author specifically discusses the influence of English sports and new migrants on the formation of the sport, its inherent ideals and it’s initial rules in 1858. Cricket was one of these major influences as cricketers were seeking to keep fit during the winter, so they attempted to copy the English during the late 1850’s by “trying to develop a national code of football” and being allowed to handle the ball. This resulted in the formation of rules in 1859. The author discusses the importance of Thompson, Hammersley, Wills and Smith on the sport and how these individuals were influenced by school football, in particular early rugby. This is integral as it highlights how rugby rules were essential in the establishment of the rules for Australian football. The article emphasises how the early rule makers banned hacking at the shins from Australian football, largely due to the influence of Hammersley and Australian concern over violence. The running bounce of the ball is another key early element of early Australian football that is described in this article. Another facet that is discussed is the omission of the offside rule, which was an effort by the early rule makers to distinguish Australian football from Rugby.

The author notes the power and growth of the Melbourne Football Club or the Melbourne Demons, as they’re known today during the period from 1859 onwards through the 1860’s. This is highly important as it allowed the MFC to impose its own rules on the various clubs in Victoria and the rest of the country, allowing a uniformity of the rules for the sport. This power allowed the MFC to influence schools to create recruiting pools for Australian footballers. The influence of Colden Harrison and Tom Wills is heavily noted by Hibbens, in particular Harrison’s positive impact on the consolidation of Australian Rules football. Hibbens highlights the debates about Harrison and whether he actually was a founding father of MFC and whether he was present for the forming of the rules in 1859. A major other key element of this article was the role of Thomas Smith and his impact on not only the initial rule making, but also linking schools and the MFC. Hibbens also describes J.B. Thompson roles as being crucial in recruiting spectators and members to the MFC. Thompson also made sure through his writings at the Argus that the MFC and the sport be widely publicised and its rules constantly updated to ensure the games survival.

Hibbens in his concluding remarks believe that although Australian football is unique, it was the copying of Cambridge University football rules as well as English public school rugby rules that was essential to the establishment of Australian football. The author’s argument that English sports had the biggest influence is highly credible for several reasons, such as the use of an oval shaped ball similar to rugby. The removal of hacking as well as several other English rugby based school rules was also important. Hibbens however doesn’t place enough emphasis on the more distinct qualities of Australian football, that separate from other sports, such as the removal of the offside rule and establishment of bouncing the football over a certain distance. It is these distinct facets that make Australian Rules football distinctively Australian rather than just simply a variation of English school rugby.

Ha funny bump. The thread or my posts got a few likes after they some how beat us earlier this season. Wasn't planning on bring it out until next year when we kick their arse.

But yeah thanks for the memories:thumbsu:

Edit: this is the only thread I've started. Wasn't at the time sure how it was going to be received, but I shouldn't have concerned myself.
