Seems to be huge overreactions on here. You only start to find out if you're any good around round 3-5. There are always teams that start the season slower, that have injuries, etc. Geelong put up one of the most gutless performances I have seen from them in rd 1 2021 and they have finished 3rd and 1st since. Teams used to win the pre-season cup (back when teams picked their best 22) and then finish bottom 4. There are always weird results in the first couple of rounds where some spud team beats a top 4. Geelong were 2-3 after 5 rounds in 2007 and only dropped the game against us with half their team missing for the rest of the year. The idea that the first competitive hit out for the year is reflective of what we will do for the rest of the season is nonsense. JHF is a 2nd year player who had a major injury setback at the start of pre-season. When we first heard about it, most people assumed he wouldn't be available for rd 1. He started slowly. I'd love for him to rack up 30 rd 1 and take a shit on everyone, but that is nuffie stuff. He's going to take a while just to get back to his 'old' form.

Wines, Boak, Butters all fairly important to our success this year. If all 3 dog it, we''re stuffed. All 3 have had interrupted pre-seasons. Calm the **** down. The players who really needed to show something appear to have been okay. Duursma/ Bergman we really needed to come good. We need Rozee to continue his form. We needed Lycett to come back strong. We needed Fanta and Junior to a) not get injured and b) show something we needed to see nature growth from some younger players. All that appears to have happened, at least if we are making the same snap judgements. Butters coming into the team will naturally make us better. Boak/Wines/JHF and co getting more weeks under their belt will bring natural improvement. The idea that everyone else in the league is playing their best footy and not doing the same is a nonsense.

JHF nice broken tackle and burst from stoppage on the wing his only highlight.

Watching him off the ball the dude was walking/slow jogging hands on hips style... like carn it's a trial but you'd think he'd offer a bit more... hoping for more in practice matches

Bigfooty's own Jed McEntee was better performed today
It's true, when he got the ball he was classy but he seemed to be walking around alot with hands on hips. He will be a great player just needs to be challenged with good opponents

He had both his legs cut open 8 weeks ago. If his only problem is he looked unfit/ a bit slow, that is something that will resolve itself.

Well I hope we are more physical against the WA sides in the trials, as opposed to our own players today.

Lycett was back in black later anyway.
I think naming Teakle as lead ruck in the probables was a smart psychological move by Carr. It gives Teakle some encouragement and puts some fire into Lycett and Hayes to claim that spot. Both Lycett and Hayes were playing with some extra conviction.

Where are the overreactions?
I know right.

Saying the game was shit isn't even up for debate. Chad Corner even said it was. Where people are getting angry is that yet again, the same issues we always had were on show which makes people decidedly toey, as it's based on an absolute shitload of evidence from a decade worth of football under this regime.

Chad saying "that's not how we've trained over the summer" is exactly the sort of shit we expect and the sort of words we see used when we turn up to the game asleep, get shat on out of the blocks and then an 'honorable loss' ensues.

Elements were even there for all to see early on when the black team got jumped by the supposedly vastly weaker white team. It was all very Port Adelaide.

Based on what I have seen at the open training sessions, the trial was no surprise.

"That's not how we want to play" sure takes the sting out of ten goal prelim final losses though.

It was a sunny afternoon at Alberton Oval in Adelaide, South Australia. The Port Adelaide Football Club had gathered for their first internal trial of the 2023 season, hoping to kick off their year on the right foot.

The team was in high spirits, with many of their star players returning from injury and a promising crop of young talent joining the ranks. The coaches had split the team into two, with the first half playing against the second half in a full-scale match.

From the first bounce, it was clear that Port Adelaide was firing on all cylinders. Their midfielders were dominating the center clearances, with young gun Connor Rozee proving to be a standout performer. The forwards were getting plenty of opportunities, with Charlie Dixon and Orazio Fantasia kicking a flurry of goals between them.

But it was the backline that truly shone on the day. Tom Jonas was a rock in defense, intercepting mark after mark and directing his teammates with authority. The young duo of Aliir Aliir and Lachie Jones showed great promise, with their pace and athleticism proving to be a nightmare for the opposition forwards.

As the final siren sounded, the Port Adelaide players gathered in a huddle, cheered on by the vocal crowd of fans who had turned out to watch the match. Despite the friendly nature of the game, the players were ecstatic to have put in such a strong performance and set the tone for the season ahead.

The internal trial proved to be a turning point for Port Adelaide. The team went on to dominate the early rounds of the season, with their form continuing to improve week after week. Charlie Dixon finished the year as the league's leading goal kicker, while Aliir Aliir was named the All-Australian fullback and Tom Jonas claimed the club's best and fairest award.

In the grand final, Port Adelaide faced off against the Western Bulldogs, who had been one of the form teams of the year. But the Power were unrelenting, with Rozee and Travis Boak dominating in the midfield and Dixon kicking five goals in a man-of-the-match performance.

As the final siren sounded, the Port Adelaide players celebrated, with the internal trial at Alberton Oval standing out as the turning point of their season. The team's hard work, determination, and skill had paid off, and they had once again established themselves as one of the powerhouses of Australian Rules Football.

This year we'll find out any if we're any good from the start which I'm wrapt about. First 5 games of Brisbane, Collingwood, Adelaide, Sydney and the Bulldogs will tell us all very quickly where we sit in the pecking order. Won't be any false currency after beating up on the easy beats etc will know from the off where we sit.

A slow start ends the season by round 5, fuels the Hinkley is out fire and it's season over very quickly. We start 0-5 or 1-4 we aren't coming back from it, we proved that last year.

On paper and form from last year we aren't better then Geelong, Sydney, Collingwood, Brisbane, the Bulldogs, Fremantle and Melbourne they immediately come to mine and I've no doubt missed another team or two there.

The challenge is there and it's on this group to start the season well, they have to there's no other way and I'm all for it. Personally I was happy with the tough draw as it's put up or shut up as soon as the season starts.

Also some of the criticism of JHF is actually mind boggling. Was he great of course not, did it mean anything, nope. He showed a couple of glimpses which is all you really want out of a intra club game and he'll be better for the run. Does he have flaws in his game to improve, of course he does, he's 19 in his second pre season and starting his second season. We'll see glimpses from him this year but he's still a kid and highly likely we won't see his best for another few seasons yet.

What I took from the match, take from it what you will:

Lycett was the best ruck on the ground.
Pasini looked good. Clurey not so much.
Visentini looked like a forward and clunked marks.
There could be a lot of improvement this year for Jase Burgoyne, Lachie Jones, Miles Bergman, Jason Horne-Francis.
Xavier Duursma getting back to form.
Mead and Jackson were pretty good in white. Mead had a great clearance in the 3rd I think.
Horne-Francis was underwhelming but had a highlight on the wing in the 3rd that showed us what he is capable of. Great to see him starting in the middle.
Fantasia looked borderline electric. Fingers crossed.
Rioli, altought quiet, did a lot of dirty work. I really liked his game.
Teakle was beaten soundly in the ruck. Looked good enough around the ground.
Georgiades needs to be told he is playing 22 games to build confidence.
Rozee, Marshall, Powell-Pepper, Boak, Burton all doing their thing.
Ben Francou kept on popping up.

The game was marred by poor umpiring for an internal trial. Just let it ride.
When the black team wanted to go into fourth gear, they killed the white team.

I feel that our rucks will be Lycett and bring stability there.
Pasini will really put pressure on McKenzie and Clurey.
The midfield is young and exciting with Lachie Jones in there with the rest of the young studs.
I think our forward line will function better with Rioli and Fantasia. That will be a real improvement on last year when McEntee played games in the small forward role.

I didn't mind the intent shown by both sides to move the ball quickly and use the corridor in breakaway play. It wasn't a dirge of a game to watch as some internal trials can be.

JHF yes was quiet but had a hugely interrupted pre-season. It wasn't even assured a couple of weeks back that he would even play this game. Some of his quick hand work in close was eye catching as was the breakaway burst of speed. I liked that he copped serious match pressure in tight. He tried a couple of tackle shrugs at bounces early on and couldn't get away. Bit of Carr influenced pressure there on the midfield group I hope.

Just a few random player thoughts as just about everything has been covered already,

Lycett was the best all round ruck on the ground. Teakle could leap over him but Scooter just takes up the space at bounces and still gets his hand to the ball or hunts it at ground level if he doesn't get the tap. Gets around the ground alright to get the ball too, although he does occasionally believe he is Russell as he goes for a jaunt with the ball in hand.

Jase Burgoyne oozes class. Pity he didn't take the screamer he flew for.

Pasini looked like he picked up where he left off before injury last year, only stronger bodied.

I've always liked what I've seen from Visentini and he looks to be continuing his development.

Love watching Lachie Jones attack the ball. Do like him around the ball.

Some good signs from Scully, couple of clean grabs and skillful ground work from the young tall. Missed a couple of set shots and seemed upset with himself on the boundary for not being involved more. Keep up the hunger.

Could come around to the idea of Teakle as a tall defender. He is mobile, aggressive at the ball and looked composed when he was loose in defence. Intention seems to be his playing as a ruck forward though.

Thought Mead was influential for the white team at stages. Looks a very solid build now.

Jackson was noticeable and even started a scuffle that seemed to originate with JHF and finish with Houston.

Kyle Marshall wasn't the beanpole I expected. Has a bit of body size already and although unobtrusive, held his own.

Barkla did a couple of nice things, he's taller and more solid than he looked in u18 video.

Senior players did what they had to, Rozee was outstanding at times. Such quality and composure.

Fantasia was eye catching especially early, could have finished with a handful of goals. Hopefully his new soccer player build will keep him on the park.

Robbie Gray stills draws a crowd and the ovation he received from the Williams Stand crowd was great. Good to see Robbie acknowledge the love.
