All this does is fasttrack the national reserves comp as you know West Coast will join asap too.

The only club I haven't heard any murmurs at any time to join are Fremantle.

Everyone else had plans to join, was just a matter of when, not if.

This'll just be annoying because Port fans will go on about setting the trend, forcing change, crows following us etc. etc.

When in actuality, we've wanted it ourselves, but have put our focus on finding a new home.

Just getting my brain up to speed in relation the non Vic AFL teams, and their relationship with their second tier comp :-

Port - obviously no love for the SANFL.

Crows - what’s their relationship like ?.

Eagles - burnt their bridges with the WAFL (various reason’s), and want to go their own way, .......... helloooooooooo VFL.

Freo - ticking along nicely with Peel.

Jesus - The Crows sweep them 5-0 across all 3 competitions, and they spit their dummy and run off to avoid more humiliation.
The Crows will be following us anyway.

I'm interested in seeing how "the team for all South Australians" and all your media people, who are also firmly attached to the SANFL, cope with it. Supposedly, you represent the SANFL teams, leading to your admin wanting to wear the state jumper.

I can not understand why Crows supporters would complain when they suffer from the same player issues as Ports do.

This is actually a situation where both teams should be working together to ensure they get a level playing field against the Victorians. Otherwise, the reserves comp will be called the VFL, rather than AFL Reserves. Etc

I like the idea of seeing the firsts and seconds play after each other.

my goodness does it make all of the Power's talk of 'history' and 'heritage' before 1997 look very hollow.

I always thought I'd have to go to Bay 13 for the worst post on Big Footy, but nope, there it is.

Is that more than the millions in license fees the Power paid to the SANFL?

Or the fact Ports crowds through the 60s-80s bank rolled the league.

Great move. SANFL is a pissant league that are restricting us in any way possible and we would be shooting ourselves in the foot to stay there. The sooner the whole comp moves to a single reserves league the better. Shame we will probably lose the prison bars but I guess we will be reasonable about it again and accept the terms and conditions

Southport wear black and white in the VFL

There are two Tigers team in the VFL

Will Collingwood really mind that Port Adelaide enter as Port Adelaide Magpies with black and white prison bar stripes in a competition that is not focused on winning?

Hopefully the Eagles follow suit and it ushers in a national reserves comp.

The whole thing needs a rehaul anyway.

Will help form a clear hierarchy in the league -
AFL - AFLR (or whatever bulltish name they come up with) - State Leagues.
The SANFL boomers have such an inflated opinion of themselves & love shouting for no AFL in the SANFL (while they trip over each other signing delisted AFL players mind you) I wonder how they will react when public interest drops another tenfold & players wanting another crack at AFL choose to be top ups for AFL reserves teams to get more notice.

Why would WA teams want to fly 35 people across the country every second week. Makes zero sense.

Also, people need to realise that it is likely that the VFL would fold if you took out the AFL aligned clubs. Only Port, Willi and Werribee would survive. It would diminish the player pool if that were to happen.

the Collingwood and Port agreement was for AFL Seniors licence - nothing regarding the VFL/reserves

so BAR IT UP Port! (had a cousin who played for Port Magpies and won a Margarey Medal)
What agreement?

Has anyone ever seen it?

On SM-G975F using BigFooty.com mobile app

Considering there are 2 different teams called the Tigers who wear Yellow and Black in the VFL, and there's already 2 different sides wearing black and white, I think they should just be able to enter as the Magpies and wear the Prison Bars, personally

It's going to be a national reserves comp in everything but name. It does leave you wondering how not having an actual state league will impact Victorian football - as it leaves clubs like Coburg and Williamstown in an awkward position.

Are the players going to play darts instead?

There is no viable option for a ‘reserves’ Eagles team to truly work without being at the will of the other WAFL clubs and the league itself. In short, they don’t want the Eagles in the league and will be happy when they are gone. Much like Port, the feeling is very mutual.

A national reserves comp is required because the state leagues want to be state leagues, not feeder/reserves comps for the AFL - which has been pretty firmly established for many years in WA and SA.

The additional travel isn’t ideal but there is no other way forward. It’s a professional sporting league, players can get their head around travel.

They’ll separate them I would imagine - Port’s move is just signally a clear intent to leave the SANFL.

The league will run a clean AFL and AFL-R (19 clubs) with a state tier ‘VFA’ (or whatever you want to call it) that will be Victoria’s equivalent to the WAFL and SANFL containing the likes of Coburg, Williamstown, Box Hill etc

Existing alignments will be wrapped up and the expectation will be to run your own reserves side.

Don’t stress, they’ll give the poor clubs the money they need to make this work.
