AFLW Port Adelaide vs Essendon - Round 10 @ Alberton

We seem to rarely get space with any possession it's been noticeable all year, it's almost like they pick up the ball and wait for a tackle.

Not enough speedy players or too many flat footed decision makers.. I dunno

Are coaches allowed to give AFLW players / the team a good old fashioned spray or is that seen as abuse / assault under the law (especially if a bloke does it).

I mean they could, but I would suspect Arnell as a former teacher probably has a pretty good read on whether that would fire them up or would make them go back in their shells. I'm not sure it would help, we're looking at a lot of kids that haven't played much at this level of at all.

They’ve had a successful VFLW program for a few years so they’ve had a running start over the other expansion teams
Meanwhile we tried to join the SANFLW and got rejected.

We play AFLW like it was played in year 1. Like it is a war of attrition and inches and the team that can tackle the hardest for the longest will win. Almost like the coach we picked up came from that era and it is the only thing she knows. But that isn't how AFLW is played in 2022.
We're a team that is months old. The team hasn't even been together for half a year.

If you look at the good teams they play with deliberate and calculated ball movement. Even the crappier teams like Essendon and Hawthorn manage to occasionally find targets inside 50 or at the very least can execute a rebound effectively.
And the teams that are doing that are the ones that have been in the competition for years. Its not a surprise that the top 3 sides are Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide.
The fact of the matter is that we are getting belted by another expansion team in the wet. That is embarrassing.

Some of it is personnel but I think most of it comes down to coaching and strategy.
Essendon are not a brand new side. They're a team that has had a couple of campaigns in the VFLW. Their side is built around their Championship winning VFL programme.
Port's team was created this year.

This team didn’t even have the luxury of a full preseason thanks to the AFL changing the starting date - and you wonder why we can’t get players on the outside? Especially when the players we are recruiting in the draft were probably the most affected by COVID restrictions?

They’ll get better - winning the ball in close and tackling are fundamental building blocks to success.

I thought it was current, former and future all Australians and a strong percentage

No Gemna no Port has been a theme since she got injured in Rd 3.

Yes, I looked back on the results and when Gemma doesn't play we don't kick many goals. It is not that she kicks huge amounts of goals but that she creates a target and with a target up forward there is system moving the ball forward.

We definitely need another tall forward or someone who can fill the gap if Houghton is injured.

There is absolutely no discernible direction or strategy associated with how me move the ball. None. We don't even try to move it quickly or deliberately. I would accept some trial and error but there is no trial. I haven't been able to identify any improvement or growth.

We have a core of good senior players - arguably to the equal of Essendon and probably better than Hawthorn. We should have performed better this year. The expectations would have been to perform better.
