Port Adelaide's plan to use jumpers similar to Collingwood

wanna find a quote of anyone claiming that?

ironically Collingwood took the design from a South Australian team that went to Melbourne wearing black and white stripes

It’s hilarious that people argue over who was the first to wear black and white stripes like it’s some sort of amazing original idea.

It’d be like Essendon and Richmond supporters arguing who was first to where a coloured sash. Who the **** cares people have been wearing sashes/stripes long before AFL was ever invented.

I'm not disputing port's push. But Collingwood also have grounds to protect their identity.

The AFL is an 18-team league in Australia. Collingwood's identity is unique in the AFL. It's magpies with black and white stripes. That's what Eddie is protecting. Just because folks don't agree with it doesn't mean it doesn't exist to the club.

And of course the irony is by constantly going on these tirades re: Port wanting to wear their traditional strip he is damaging his own brand and the Collingwood brand in the process.

Port have as much grounds to wear black and white as Collingwood.

'We were wearing Black & White 10 years before you' doesn't cut it.

Guess what, no-one is stopping them wearing black and white, they wear it all year.

Collingwood wore black and white before Port ever did.
I dont care if both clubs wear it.
I just hate that Port fans claim they were the original 'owners' of the B&W stripes

I was always lead to believe Port had the stripes earlier because they're an older club but you're right, it wasn't until 1902 that Port Adelaide went to a black and white jumper.

What colours were Port wearing 150 years ago?

Port Adelaide started wearing black and white in 1902.
118 years ago : not quite 150 years I know.
Not sure what team you follow but here is a list of the teams that were formed AFTER Port Adelaide were wearing black and white. Your team might be one of them.

Richmond
Footscray, now Western Bulldogs
Hawthorn
North Melbourne
West Coast
Fremantle
Brisbane
Adelaide
Gold Coast
Greater Western Sydney

Many teams modify a jumper or club colours, even a logo, for whatever reasons. To accept entry into the AFL, as we all know, Port Adelaide added an extra colour and selected a new logo but still brought with it, its entire black and white Magpies history. What is being asked is for that club to be able to display their hard earned history, twice a year, at the Showdown games. How many times over the years have we all heard Sam Newman and others, on national TV using McGuire's footy show as his platform, to describe the SA showdowns as basically non events. So what's the issue ? What is the problem for a South Australian team, to wear their historical South Australian colours, in a match played against another South Australian team in South Australia in a match that Victorian media historically consider to be not worthy. Or is it about continuing what has been the case for now on a quarter of a century, what Eddie wants, everyone allows him to get.

Notes of interests, ... maybe ☺

Cos Cardone who is a director on the PAFC board, appointed by the AFL, was i believe the PAFC person in discussion with the AFL on Port Adelaide wearing the prison bars for the 150th this season because he is also the Chairman of the club's brand and marketing committee. He also happens to be the CEO of McGuire Media, Australia's largest independent producer of sports entertainment. CEO of Jam TV with Eddie McGuire as Chairmen. ..... Lets play join the dots.
Question : Is anyone on your club's board of directors also employed by Eddie McGuire ?

Collingwood (formed 1892) selected black and white at the suggestion of William Crawley who was impressed by the black and white colours of the SOUTH AUSTRALIAN inter-colonian team at the time. (state team 1891-1894, 1899-1907) If correct, Collingwood's colours are a result of a South Australian team, just not Port Adelaide. The piping shrike is also known as the Murray Magpie and is on the South Australian state flag and selected by Collingwood as their emblem.

Joining the VFL is not the same as forming

I'm pretty sure it was Norwood that named it that, Port liked it and went with it.

I think you are correct. It was used as a derogatory remark back then.
Port supporters loved it and took it on board.
Its similar to now with Port supporters being referred to as wharvies.
All non Port SANFL supporters use it as a derogatory remark.
For Port supporters its like a badge of honour.
we are a weird mob ☺

Joining the VFL ???? Freudian slip mate. Its the AFL - has been for quite sometome.

The AFL awarded the license to the Port Adelaide Football Club, established in 1870. It related back to the original bid on 1990. Should there be a second SA licence, , will be awarded to the PAFC.

Dont believe me, phone the AFL.

I really don't have a problem with Port wearing the strip, but 150 year celebrations, you would think they would wear the strip they wore 150 years ago.

I'm talking about the fact you list North Melbourne, Richmond & Footscray as 'forming' after Port started wearing Black & White

That is not correct

Maybe even Hawthorn they formed in 1902 so it could be a matter of months either way
