Port Adelaide's plan to use jumpers similar to Collingwood

ok so you guys have just totally missed the part where a Port fan erroneously stated that North Melbourne/Richmond/Footscray & Hawthorn formed in the year they joined the VFL - thus ignoring their pre VFL history
The VFL and what we know now as the AFL relationship around the 1900s was alot more complex than a team in the SANFL joining the AFL in the last 20 years.

ok I don't know how much more it can be spelt out

A poster claimed that Port have been wearing prison bars longer than North Melbourne / Richmond / Footscray / Hawthorn have existed

The first three is blatantly wrong, Hawthorn maybe? They formed in the same year Port went to black and white

Eddie has been angry for a few weeks now. I think everyone is getting a spray, this is just another topic for him.

End of the day wanting to wear it against the crows doesn't really upset anyone I would have thought.

End of the day, it shows how bad we need the football to start.

Some people have handled lockdown well, others not so well. Eddie is clearly in the latter bucket.

And the Richmond football club was formed 1885 And joined The VFL in 1908 and has been wearing Yellow and black since 1887.

Sorry, wasn't aware Richmond were in a previous football association prior to VFL.
I googled. They were in the VFA transferring to VFL in 1908.
If there was no club name change, then the established club year is 1885. Changes to uniform, colour, logo etc does not change the year a club was established.

North Melbourne is even older than Port Adelaide

just so ya know

Can we not turn this into a South Aussie shitfight? Thanks lads.

back on track, we want to wear the Prison Bars in home showdowns. There is no justifiable reason why this should be denied.

Agreed, on both counts.

Yep, I think a few Port folks are on the trigger fingers due to MB threads usually being militant shitfights. The only crow fan posting here has been very reasonable and is generally for us wearing the PBs full time. Let's be respectful of all clubs histories.

Personally, short of wearing the PBs as a full time home guernsey, I really like the symbolism of wearing them in every Showdown. You can see in the AFC as a sort of weird amalgamation of all the other SANFL clubs, both in their guernsey design and in their ethos. I think it will intensify what is already the fiercest rivalry in the sport.

Est 1869, but was disbanded in 1876, re-established in 1877 under the name Hotham and then became North Melbourne once again in 1888. So not continuous since 1869 but granted, one of the oldest of clubs.
.

The port Adelaide football Club was formed in 1870 and entered the AFL in 1997
Thats the point
Richmond were formed in 1885 and entered the then VFL in 1908
Saying a Richmond were formed in 1908 is akin to saying Port were formed in 1997 - it’s wrong.

That happened because you sold out your SANFL roots

That isn't a diss, Port are now on the national stage - other clubs like Norwood / Sturt etc are forever in feeder leagues

The virus/economic choas of this year accelerated it, but the process started when Port went talking to the VFL in 1990

The timing is just rather, poetic, I guess

No whats poetic is in a decades time whilst the pafc is still running around 160 years after it was established, the sanfl will either be extinct or a feeder league to the afl and not some supposed 2nd best stand alone league in Australia. Now that's poetic.

It shouldn’t matter what Collingwood fans, or the Collingwood Football Club as an entity think. Their opinion is irrelevant as it has nothing to do with them.

wanna find a quote of anyone claiming that?

ironically Collingwood took the design from a South Australian team that went to Melbourne wearing black and white stripes
find a quote? Ive heard plenty of port fans say it. Next time i find one ill send it through to you.
Collingwood may have stolen it from someone, but at the end of the day nothing is original. Comparisons can be found in anything. But i never said in my post that Collingwood came up with it. Simply that they didnt take it from port which seems to be the narrative.

Mate if someone's going to make a statement like the one you're referring to youd best have a source or some evidence of it otherwise youre just a shit talker who should spend time in bay13

Just a side point - when did club nicknames become sacrosanct anyway? Who really gives a stuff if Port want to call themselves the Magpies? (I know - it upsets the AFL plans to market the teams to us like American Franchises where teams are known by their nicknames rather than their city). Most clubs have a few nicknames - a couple their own supporters use, and several rude ones used by opposition fans:cool:. There's probably dozens of 'Magpies' in competitions. When Richmond reserves joined with Coburg in the VFL for a few years, the VFL had 2 Tigers - Coburg and Werribee. The competition didn't grind to a halt.

Unless the nickname is included in the club name, you can't trademark a nickname (I know pop stars have tried - and failed).
Can I trademark the expression 'Self-important W*nker' and say that can only be applied to Eddie McGuire from now on? In fact, every time someone refers to Eddie, they must use that term?

I know Port won't use the Magpies name, because a nickname is just a bit of fun, and they're not stupid for the sake of being stupid, but Collingwood seem to be another story.

Re the Prison bars - just wear them and pay the fine. You'll get it back under the funds distribution - and the fact that no other team will object will put Ed in his place. Do it once - wear the flak and the faux outrage from some parts of the media - do it twice, and the issue will be over.

This, im not sure why the club wouldn't just do it and cop the fine, Ive had this thought for a while, the afl aren't going to sanction a club to the point of destroying their own brand.
