why doesnt he just walk in to the goal square, turn around and kick it through? Whch ball is the live ball?

Players shouldnt have access to the ball bag, there should be a steward at each then that hands the ball to the player when the other ball is dead

You have this the wrong way around.

Within the rules of the game? Maybe not, seems to be some debate as to whether an additional ball may be removed from the bag before the score is recorded.
Within the spirit of the game? Absolutely - the rules were changed to alllow the FB kicking the ball out as soon as the goal umpire had signaled a score (ie the two fingers and NOT the flag waving). It was changed to speed up the game and to minimise pointless downtime.

It would have been interesting to see what Pittard would have done if the shot at goal had dropped short - we might have seen a second ball in play then.

Is there any rule that a player is unable to hold an inactive ball outside of the field while the active ball is in play? Seems like this would make sense. However if this is indeed found to be within the rules than it is ingenious and almost should be encouraged to speed up the game.

Its a non issue because the rule states a kick out after a point is scored must wait until the umpire calls all clear and the umpire signals the score. The player can kick out before the flags are waived. The umpire clearly stuffed up by not calling it back. Port players obviously told to push the boundaries to see if its called.

There is more than one person from each club reviewing games so even if you have a low opinion of him there are others at the club. I will guarantee that every club would be aware of it after that game, even with Dunstall mentioning it.

Apparently Pittard was told by the umpire and Broadbent after that it wasn't allowed. No team will do it.

Not sure what the AFL rules say about that, but only 1 ball can be in play at any 1 time, including on the field of play. Since the ball is outside of the field of play, I'm not sure if there's anything wrong with what they're doing. Defence just has to be smarter and deny them the quick play opportunity by standing in the square until the umpire tells them to move out.

The team kicking in can't kick in until:

1. Umpire has signaled a behind
2. Kick out square is clear of players and loose balls

At least those were the rules when I was umpiring a few years ago, maybe they've relaxed them...

No. Umpire should have pulled player up, but missed it. Player can't take different ball until goal ump signal is made.

So a player cannot touch one of the balls in the bag behind the goals until the goal umpire has signalled, which didn't happen in the case in question where Pittard had the ball in hand whilst the shot was being taken.

That's what they should have done - shoved him out onto the field and got the umps attention.

that would be a massive over reaction for a once of issue with which Pittard was warned not to do it again. It sounds like Pittard did this on his own accord and wasn't a team directive.

Ball in your half from a kick in, all your players near the ball, opposition will likely mark up, kick the ball in towards opposition goal where no one but keeper is and don't return to the field. Have another player run on near keeper and score. We scored that many goals like that.

oh and on port doing this. Disgrace, strip them of all points

It's pathetic. The game was good before, rules never need to be changed, they just need to be tweaked.

Why are people against this tactic? 2 balls are not in play. It makes the game quicker. It reduces stoppages. Nobody is being hurt except for lazy defenders who wouldn't be out of position if there wasn't so much crowding.

If more clubs do this maybe other clubs will hesitate with putting every player in the forward half of the ground and maybe there will be less congestion.
