Autopsy Positives and Negatives vs Richmond

I think the AFL has struggled to strike the right balance on the abuse rule but there is absolutely no reason it shouldn't apply to players on the bench too. It shouldn't be tolerated.

I don't actually know what Shuey did or said, but "they never pay it like that" isn't a good argument. The umpire dissent/abuse interpretation is about setting a standard for grassroot levels. You should expect as a player that if you remonstrate from the bench it might get the same penalty as if you were on field.

I have a suspicion it may have been our new runner who gave the abuse ( Masten );,they showed him and Shuey having a chat shortly after and Shuey grinned and patted him on the back i think.

Very happy with our efforts today. We actually looked like an AFL team. Lots of good signs. Kelly was outstanding. Yeo and Jamieson great early. Waterman looked very confident without JK around. Naitanui was a potential game changer. Darling and Barrass were very good.

Probably the only downsides for me were some sketchy decision making at times (Yeo punching it back towards goal and Hurn seemingly not expecting it), Petrucelle not really fitting in with what we're trying to do now, and Ryan and Rioli looking threatening but lacking polish.

Trew looked right at home in an AFL midfield.

Was frustrating when Jamieson and Allen spoiled each other though.

On a more deeper reflection. Proud of the boys. With more cattle In the mids we will have a cats bounce back in less than 5 years. Expect a top 4 finish within 4 years
With this form, we could be in the mix for the bottom part of the 8 next year. A proper pre-season and keeping our talent on the park, and I don't think we're behind the log jam of teams in the middle of the ladder.

I think so but I really don't want to see a dead cat bounce until two seasons of bottoming out.

Want to find our next pettraca and Oliver

That's fine if it's paid consistently.

  • Saw more than enough in Trew to give him a contract extension, but more importantly more games.
  • Hough is going to be an absolute gun (draft bargain)
  • Bazzo belongs and will be an asset down back
  • SPS was very good when given the chance
  • We look good when Cripps is firing.
  • JD had a great 250th
  • Enjoyed watching the game

  • Yeo
  • Umpiring at times
  • Ryan continuing to jump out of contests, looking for the cheap free.
  • Duggin's turn overs.

All in all, I'm just happy to be enjoying watching the boys again, and looking forward to next week. If we draft well again this year, things will turn faster than we all thought earlier this year (still going to take time, but shouldn't be so painful).

His standard default player, I presume .... Waterman. ;)
No, Waterman got specifically mentioned one bullet point above.

Not Williams either.

One of life’s great mysteries.

That would be ok if, when the Waterman free kick was paid in the last and the player on the mark was clearly giving the umpire a mouthful, it wasn't ignored.
lt actually took a punch to the guts to West in the goal square before the 50 was paid.

Positives - performance of majority of players
Negatives - performances by these players
Williams: is a dud and always will be. Delist asap
Redden: does his ability to win contested ball and tackle when ball is in tight offset his offensive and defensive transition speed? I don't think it does
Gaff: any player can play his role of being weak and slow. Is not afl standard

Probably win if had average players replace these 3 guys and to a lesser extent Duggan who at least provides some carry but can't kick for shit

  • Petch in the middle worked for us, he put plenty of defensive pressure on today. Just needs to kick straight infront of goal when he gets the chance.
  • Cripps was immense, such a barometer for us when he’s up and about.
  • Kelly, what a champ.
  • Barrass played back shoulder all day and is just so much better when he does it.
  • Naitanui will cure cancer one day, the closest thing we have to god on this planet.
  • Jones at half back has been a revelation.
  • Hough is going to be an A grade player for us for a long time and I can’t wait to see it evolve.
  • Darling and Waterman had great games in an undersized forward line, presenting hard all day.

- Yeo’s injury.

All I wanted out of this season (when it was obvious the direction it was heading) was a faster game style and to see what we have in youth.

I went to the game today and felt that it was the newer/younger players who were keener to move the ball fast and come inboard. That’s great.

Now don’t mess this up by winning too many games - stay bottom two and get that high draft pick and easier fixture. As much as it pains me to say - do a Collingwood. They’ve dipped nicely and are competing again.

Biggest takeaway from this for me is Trew attending 17 CBAs, the third most out of all our mids.

Really really good spread in there today, nicer to see from the coaches. Mix of experience and exposing young players - excellent to see Trew actually given a go in there instead of forward flanked and Redden sacrificing his spot a little yet still playing a typical good Redden game.

Hopefully can keep that up for the rest of the season with a bit of a like-for-like balance in mind (eg if O'Neill/SPS are spending time there instead of Trew give them Shueys place at those times instead of Reddens). Think we saw that a bit with Shuey/Petch today and liked the experiment though have doubts on Petch's footy smarts holding up to the midfield long term.

Leaving HEdwards ,Witherden and Foley out of defence helps us get good momentum from the backline ..Duggan is next player in line ..
Forget about dropping Duggan... we need a beastie running half back to replace Yeo for at least the next 4 weeks, and SPS is on 1 leg. Duggan is not Yeo but not sure what we have in the cupboard... Foley was ok+ vs South Freo but Nelson was just the usual Nelson and Witherden was just WAFL.
