Biggest positive has to be Naitanui's effect on our team.
We've lost the clearances and i50s in every game since Naitanui has been injured.
Often the opponent has had almost double the i50s.
Last time we played Richmond we lost the i50s 36 to 65.

Today, we won the inside 50s (57 vs 53) but we also won the clearances decisively (45 vs 31).
Some of the taps from Naitanui today were simply unreal. He had six clearances himself but almost all of Shuey and Kelly's combined clearances (20) were due to Naitanui's dominance, and they lead to emphatic forward 50 entries and goal scoring opportunities.
I will continue stating the same position I've held since 2015 (and I'm not alone) - there has never been a better proponent of the ruck tap than Naitanui, and we will probably never see his quality again.

From a guy that unfortunately missed the game how did Trew go? Anything to persist with all is he gone by seasons end?
Started poorly and was overawed but was strong in a number of tackles in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters.
Also kicked a goal with his 13 disposals. Probably not enough to warrant selection next year (in a typical year) but was decent all things considered.
Needs to work on one-touching the ball and his immediate reaction time which were sloppy at times today.

He was very fumbly and his first instinct was to handball backwards rather than continue forward, even if we had all the momentum from a centre clearance. That said, he bobbed up with a set shot goal from a blatant tripping free kick and generally was in the right spot.

Impossibly harsh to say after one game but let’s say I’d love for him to be cleaner in getting possession and we’ll go from there.

He was surprisingly ok and got better as the game went on. Broke out of the middle and steamrolled someone that resulted in a goal. If he can back that up he should get another year being only a rookie.

When you look at where we came from just 8 games ago, a 109 point loss against the same team, then there are plenty of positives to come out of this game. We need to get rid of dumb turnovers and errors and we should get a few wins before the season is over.
Leaving HEdwards ,Witherden and Foley out of defence helps us get good momentum from the backline ..Duggan is next player in line ..

Nice game - fought hard and showed some good signs. Lost it in a few short sections and some inaccuracy - just didn't have much answer for Richmond's speed.

+s
Game plan looking better.
Trew was a lot better than I expected.
Another great game from Hough - clearly deserves a rising star nomination before the end of the year IMO
Nic Nat is pretty good hey.
Kelly.
Cripps is finding some serious form
SPS was good after coming on.
Barrass is having a great year - should be in the AA conversation.

-s
Yeo...
Accuracy
Speedy outside run just kills us.
Gaff invisible.
Duggan's kicking.
Still not sold on Williams.

Will be interesting to see if he holds his spot next week , would be good to see him get a few more games before seasons end and it doesn’t end up being one of those sympathy games like hammer brayshaw got a couple of years ago

A couple of issues we had:
  • One (quality) tall short in the forward line. Waterman works well as a hard-running high half-forward, Darling leads up the ground too, which left Williams who is not up to standard. Doesn't take enough marks, bad shot for goal. Provides a contest but that's not enough. Allen (and Kennedy in the short term) should help us here.
  • too many 'attacking' half-backs (i.e. defenders who don't defend). Rotham and Duggan weren't generating an exit so we had to put Yeo and Jones back as well. But Rotham is a bad defender, Duggan plays loose and so does Jones. So only the opposition KPFs and whoever Hurn (tough but slow these days) is playing on get manned up (plus anyone near Yeo). Cole back will help again but we can't have all of Jones, Duggan and Rotham in the same backline.

Big shout to Gaff three clangers resulting oppp goals in defence, Duggan and Rotham brain freeze in the backline....and can't be arse Ryan in the forward line today
Ive supported Duggan but at the moment he is a liability. He has to go back to WAFL. Williams is the same and Gaff is a passenger with zero hurt factor. All have to be dropped. I’d bring in Culley for Gaff even though he hasn’t done heaps. Just a bit of endeavour and skill.would be nice. Maybe Witherden for Duggan and Strydnica for William. Yeo is out so Rotham needs to play but needs a rocket up him.

Goal kicking in the end was probably the difference in the end. They made their chances count whilst we worked hard only to miss our chances. Unusual for us but I don’t think it’s a surprise at the G to see the tigers kick so well. It’s truly a home ground advantage in such a deciding area in front of goal.

Can’t say that I am upset with a lot of what we did today. Moved the ball well, pressured, tackled with intent and played a brand of footy that I think will keep us competitive at best for this year.

Trew looked pretty good on debut, loved his 3rd quarter. Hough very good again, Kelly amazing. 40 touches, 2 goals probably his best game for the club or at least top 2 or 3.

I don’t know of any player that makes such a big difference to the output of a side than Nic. We looked aggressive with ball in hand whenever he was around.

Cripps is having an excellent patch.

I hough he started to show an attacking instinct as he grew in confidence. Give him another game.

Yeah but how many marks per game? /s

A lot of that will come with some consistency and confidence. We still don’t seem that far off ability wise, we just keep shooting ourselves in the foot. Won pretty much every key ball winning area comfortably, as well as the inside 50s, we just lost the turnover battle. Richmond shot the lights out and we were below average in front of goal. Covid definitely robbed us of a good crack at a flag with Kelly based on today. Don’t think he’s really had a consistently smooth run at it the entire time he’s been here, always some sort of rubbish happening.

I think today shows at minimum we’re still a bottom of the 8 quality side at full tilt and that the first half of the year was all preseason (or lack of). Real chance to take a top 2 pick into next year and shoot straight back up into finals contention with a soft fixture imo, providing our players don’t keep getting injured (which is a real possibility as they age)
