Not sure if there's a thread for this already (I promise I searched first), so sorry if this has been discussed already.

After yesterday's draw between North and GWS, Jason Dunstall brought up the possibility of discussions of extra time in very brief passing while introducing Bounce.

I don't think they ever discussed it further on the show, and I can't imagine that's going to be the match everyone points to when demanding a change to the rules, but I am curious what everyone's thoughts on extra time in general are. I don't think it should go on forever, for a multitude of reasons, but five extra minutes to decide the four points doesn't seem awful to me.

What's the general consensus here?

My 2C, draws have always been a part of the home and away season so fans want to retain them.

Personally wouldn't bother me if they introduced extra time.

If a team is not good enough to beat the opposition by the end of the game, then it is fair and reasonable to have a draw.

If people really need a win, just have a coin toss. It's fair to both sides and just as silly as needing a result that is not a draw.

Reading through this thread I'm going to be in the minority here but:

High-continuous scoring games (such as Aussie Rules, basketball),I don't think it makes sense to finish with a draw. The scoring systems are specifically designed to produce a result. Imo I'm alot more let down by a draw in these sports as a result than when it happens in soccer or hockey. The NBA removed draws as a part of their competition and I feel like we should do the same.

I think that’s a valid argument. I don’t mind draws in soccer, but that’s not a sport where you have a ton of scoring usually, so you run the risk of still ending in a draw. Meanwhile, you might get a few basketball games going to 2 or 3 OT, but most of the time, 5 minutes is enough — make a few baskets and get a few stops.

The scoring in footy makes draws far less likely, sure. It does not follow that a draw does not make sense.

I think draws are good for the competition as snagging two points for a draw rather than none for a loss can benefit teams (such as mine) that have always seem to have a lower percentage than other teams on the same amount of wins. You’ve got your own unique path to the top 8 when you’re half a game ahead or behind of most of the other teams.

A draw is a result.

Never. Extra 10 minutes of playing time to kick more goal to win the Coleman, or take mark of the year. These awards do not count finals intentionally because they are based on every player having the same opportunity.

What if Carlton drew with Brisbane in round 21, 2008 and Fev kicked 3 goals during it, he wins the Coleman too with an extra 10 minutes of playing time?

ET exists in a lot of sports and IMO should exist in AFL too.

You don't lose anything with ET, what you gain is hugely exciting finishes and epic results. The drama goes up in games with ET/OT. The fact it would happen rarely in AFL only adds to the excitement of it.

If you can't split the teams after two more 5 min periods then so be it, split the points.

There's no logical reason not to have it, the primary argument people make is if you can't find a winner after 120 minutes you don't deserve to win, it's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Teams can be evenly matched, splitting them in a high pressure period is still deciding a deserving winner, obviously there needs to be some sort of end point, but there's a number of ways to get there.
