The story of the game for me was really just the intensity that Carlton brought and our inability to match it. They were hungry without the ball and sharp with it. For large stretches of the game we played at the intensity of a Captains Run.

That moment where Lycett was waiting for the ball in the centre square like he was at a kids clinic epitomised it for me. Hopefully he got an absolute spray after that. Go hard at the ball or don't bother rocking up. That needs to be the message.

Wines then did it again the second quarter.

Probably the most concerning thing was how brittle our defence looked and how lame our forward line looked without 31 year old Trent McKenzie and 32 year old Charlie Dixon respectively. Everyone raves about the midfield but the whole spine is held together by a pair of over 30 ex Gold Coast SUNS that get injured regularly and can't have too much football left in them. It's very worrying.
Lord looks a very capable replacement if we can sort out his kicking. MG on the sides as well.

Forward line is ok in my opinion.

Totally agree about the defence though.

Take any side's full forward and full back out - it's going to be a big test.

The bigger issue particularly in the back line is the lack of foresight to prepare adequately for the future. KPD has been a need going back to 2020 and still hasn't been addressed. Aliir has helped but he's not a true shutdown guy and gets exposed too often to be reliant as a Matthew Scarlett/Mal Michael type.

The forward line has functioned well without Dixon in the past - today's performance is an outlier in that regard.
They have tried, Skinner came in and out. Tried had to get Rutogolea. Think there was one other as well.

Would have liked to have seen more of Hayes instead of rushing Lycett back.

We’ve just made it harder for Lycett’s knee heading into finals, and Hayes got no football this weekend at any level.

Its interesting that the two gsmes weve dropped Burton for, one of their smalls has gone nuts in the first half

Having slept on it, still feel like this was no less pathetic. It's not just that we lost (particularly given the very poor selections), rather it's the way we lost any by how much.

Coming into the second half, if we kick the first goal we really get ourselves back into it, instead we give up the first 2 goals. The same after 3 quarter time, 5 goals down and if we manage the first couple we are back in it. Instead we give up the first 4 goals.

All year we have shown a resilience and want to fight back from anywhere to win, but not yesterday. Yesterday we say the typical Hinkley coached effort from years gone by, things go against us any they fold. It's hard to say they gave up because i'm not sure they bothered to turn up in the first place.

The next 3 games (Collingwood, Crows, Geelong) will not tell us a lot about the club moving forward. Massive test, need to be competitive in all 3 and win at least 2.

Still no one can say who was on Motlop first half. It’s a difficult question, I am thinking Williams. He looked like a Labrador on a walk

The three goals in the second quarter, it was Jones on him

I really hope it’s a one off game for Lord and his kicking. He’s kicked badly in the past but usually redeems himself to a degree with his competitiveness, marking and occasional goals that aren’t gimmes.
His kicking last night was terrible. You can forgive one that slews off the side of the boot but 2-3 that come off the side of the boot at a set shot is just not up to AFL standard. To me it looks like his whole preparation, run up and execution needs a lot of work.

It isn't. He's been the same in every game he's played for us lol.

Lord takes far too long fartarsing around before going back and lining up, which means he ends up rushing his actual lining up and walk in routine before the unp calls play on. His first shot it took him 20 seconds before he even turned around and looked at the goals

Its fixable. Or at least should be

Nailed his last set shot & didn't go to water like Butcher that's the positive.

The three goals in the second quarter, it was Jones on him

To be fair to Lachie, one goal he was on the wing tackling and Jonas dropped a mark and fell over then Motlop capitalised;

The second goal Lachie dropped off him and tried to spoil the ball away from Curnow and Aliir, mistimed the spoil and Motlop crumbed it, walked around Jonas and goaled

The third goal was a quick break from the centre square. both sprinted to the Aliir v Curnow contest, the ball spilled into the Motlop's path and Jonas watched Motlop run past him.

Hinkley likes to talk about team defence, Jonas dismantled that.

If you statistically analyse Jonas’ game.
6 touches at 50% meaning he had 3 effective disposals, 5 rebound 50s which means he gave the ball back to the oppo in the backhalf more often than not when he had the ball

1 contested 5 uncontested possessions which means he doesnt even win the hard ball and floats around waiting for the handball receive like a seagull, same with marks 0 contested 2 uncontested marks. 9 pressure acts so not working for his team, 75 meters gained so his dump kicks arent even clearing the defensive zone,

but hey bloke had 9 one percenters so he really is playing for the team with his shepards and double fisting

Have to admire Lords competiveness - he’s only 21 and will get bigger and stronger. If he had kicked the first couple he would have been flying with the wind in his sails. However, I’m not sure that his kicking woes are easily fixed. To the extent he nails one it’s more by good luck than design. Seems to be almost jogging at the point of release and with a long drop from hand to boot - there’s a lot that can go wrong. Someone described his style a something you would see in c grade amateurs - and that about nails it. Not sure it’s fixable and maybe why we had him trialling down back in the seconds

That was the worst thing about picking Jonas, his weaknesses completely destroy the synergy down there.

It's why I'm tuning out people saying players like Williams were shit yesterday.... that's fukcing why!

Spot on. Easy goals are a failure of team defence, not of the individual opponent. We lost our reliable and selfless last line defensive rock and replaced him with a bollard who couldn't do anything right and it destroyed the whole system.
