Whilst I tend to agree with you about established players like Pitto and Kennedy coming back from injuries, I think it’s telling Kemp, Dow and Carroll aren’t listed in the league side. None have had any issues with injury as far as I know and all should be pressing hard for selection especially given first team incumbents in their positions are out.

But we know Dow can dominate the 2s so IMO isn’t better for us to play him in the 1s for practice games to see if he has improved enough to warrant a spot in the team rather than learning when 4 points are at stake against Collingwood and Brisbane?…Unless of course the coaches think he is miles off earning a spot.

Given there are only 2 practice games I think we need to prioritise team cohesion over player development. Playing Dow onball in the ones would mean another of our mids get played out of position or not at all. He has had all summer to move up the pecking order.

I think you’re reading far too much into it.

Players are on load management plans and individualised programs.

For all we know, the MC want to get full games into those three, or experiment with various setups and structures.

I don’t think it says anything about how hard they are pressing for a senior berth.

I don't think it's unusual at all for Kemp, Dow and Carroll

I understand that supporters want them to play ahead of others, but it's the same story, coaches will pick a side based on output and we have better options in those positions
After watching Carroll play VFL last year, I'm of the opinion that his form has regressed since his first season with Carlton, not improved.

I wonder if it is an example of a player improving their weaknesses and forgetting their strengths.

He has put on size and his contested work has improved (no doubt his tank has too) but he was such a classy ball user. That's was his point of difference as an inside mid. His disposal was scrappy at best in the back half of last year and often looked rushed with the ball.

We don't need him to be an inferior version of Cripps. We need him to be the best version of Jack Carroll.

Seems it will be something like this:

20. Lachie Plowman 33. Lewis Young 24. Nic Newman

15. Sam Docherty 23. Jacob Weitering 42. Adam Saad

4. Lochie O'Brien 9. Patrick Cripps 13. Blake Acres

12. Tom De Koning 29. George Hewett 5. Adam Cerra

25. Zac Fisher 30. Charlie Curnow 7. Matthew Kennedy

1. Jack Silvagni, 10. Harry McKay 3. Jesse Motlop

14. Oliver Hollands 39. Alex Cincotta 35. Ed Curnow 36. Josh Honey

26. Lachlan Cowan 45. Alex Mirkov

Have to say, disappointed Dow is getting a run.

Carroll has time on his side at his age. He's sitting behind a star studded midfield working on his craft and bulking up a very slim frame from his draft year. Sometimes players just need a bit of confidence and a good run at it.

Either way I'd expect him to play more games than Dow this year as he's flexible and even though his kicking has its ebbs and flows he's generally just far more damaging by foot than Paddy.

Not worried about him at all for now, but we certainly need to look at bringing in some young mids the next few years to build on that next generation once Cripps and Hewett slow up.

I get people are saying you can’t read too much into it but why would Kennedy be named in both the AFL squad and VFL squad for load management? Makes no sense. If you want him to play less game time but see him in the firsts then surely he plays a half in the firsts and then is put on ice. Being named in both suggests he will play in portions of both. I’m pretty confused with him particularly

Kennedy plays very low % time on ground in our normal rotations during games. Could be as simple as they want him to have a few extra minutes in the VFL game to get him that match fitness and hardness. Docherty will be seeing more time in the middle you'd imagine given the uncertainty regarding his best position at this stage. Kennedy is a known performer but would simply need the time on ground to get himself prepared for round 1.

This is confusing me

If McGov,comes back next week who will he replace? Newman or Cowan? And if so,shouldn’t Kemp has a first crack at McGov’s role this week?

Same for the midfield. Why is Ed ahead of ebony Carroll & Dow, in a practice match

Confusing!

Looking around the other boards I also found this snippet from Geelongs board re Tom Atkins playing half and half too

'Atkins also played the second half of the first hit out with the AFL team, so he's not purely playing VFL. I also read elsewhere that it was Atkins who put his hand up/relegated himself to play in the VFL section of tonight, and work with the younger guys - that says a bit about the character of the guy'

I guess we'll find out tomorrow

Hooray! It's game day bitches.

Anyone know if the club will be posting game updates on Myspace?

I could send some update via carrier pigeon but Jeff is on restricted minutes due to a preseason injury.
Bad management of a previous injury & an incident with an acorn and gravity.
