A bit of backyard DIY went horribly wrong for the Richmond ruck-forward after the 2002 season. The No.2 draft pick from 1997 fell from a tree while trying to hang an outdoor swinging chair and landed on what he described as "a broomstick-sized" garden stake, which got stuck in his thigh. Ottens spent two days in hospital having the wound treated but was back to full fitness by early December. However, his 2003 season was derailed by back surgery just before the opening round, wiping out the first half of his campaign.

Landscape has changed in regard to opposite foot kicking. Opposite foot only needs to be serviceable if you have an elite preferred. Dusty mastered the art of being able to deliver off the outside of his foot. I was watching a training session with Petracca in Noosa during the week and he was doing the exact thing that Sonsie did.

Richmond mid-season draftee Jacob Blight, who hails from Albany, returned to Punt Road on Monday for the club’s first pre-season session.

The Railways product, who spent some time in Albany during the off-season break, is taking part in his first proper AFL pre-season after being taken with the Tigers’ No.2 mid-season draft pick last year.

The 196cm 22-year-old key defender played three matches for the Tigers last season and may get more opportunities following the departure of retiring stalwart backman Dylan Grimes
