Because it isn't a flaw. It's actually what makes him such a good tackler, like a rugby player. Sure every now again, he might knock himself out doing so but he just as likely to do that when putting his head over the ball and you're not going to stop putting your head over the ball in an attempt to stop knocking yourself out just like you wouldn't change an effective tackling technique.

Hitting your head is a technique issue, rugby or otherwise. Cameron Smith doesn't put his 'in the wrong spot' ever. Getting your head & shoulder in the correct place is all about footwork. What makes it more complicated tackling like this in afl is that the game isn't "front on", so players can change direction at the last second and if you have already "planted" your feet you are likely to get in a bad spot.

It's all about context, the average afl player tackles without using their shoulder. In rugby this would be poor technique, however the desired outcome is to pin the arm, not dominate the contact. So different technique.

So in short, tackling like a rugby player has shortcomings in afl.

One example of Townsend tackling technique working against him throughout his career, only once has he ever knocked himself out whilst tackling. Do you change your goal kicking technique cause you missed one shot on goal?

Don't know why I'm debating this, Townsend might be an average footballer but the one area of his game no one can question is his tackling.

Add to that some other players play that way, we see Joel Selwood with a head bandage or plaster in about one in five games and no one calls him out as a liability or too risky. Not suggesting Townsend is best 22, far from it, but if he can put pressure on the Miles. the Hunts, the Griggs, then he gets my support. Don't mind a bit of 'hard-at-it!

I agree. but bloody hell, its great to watch him crunch opposition players in those kamikaze tackles!
Towno destroying Mitch Robinson in the Brisbane game last year was one of my highlights for the year (although I don't have a great deal of 2016 'highlights')

Would be amazing if Townsend has turned into a gun player.... Why the sudden surge of optimism?

Who has suggested he'll become a gun player? Did I miss a post somewhere?

What's the difference between Andrew Moore and Jacob Townsend?

Townsend got an extra year. Full Stop
I think Townsend was fair bit off being an AFL player last year. However, he did have something on his side that Moore didn't - age. He is still young enough to turn his career around with hard work. He may never be an absolute star, but he might be a sneaky chance of being a decent foot soldier. With some decent development coaching, hard work in the gym and on the track, he can at least give himself a chance of making it. I'm not putting money on it mind you, but I haven't written him off totally. I will give him this year to win me over. After that, I'll adopt your attitude.:D

I'd actually like Townsend trialled as a mid-size forward, with spurts in the midfield. I could see him play a similar role to what ex Cat Max Rooke used to play. Defensively with his aggression will make a lot of Backmen nervous. Is good overhead and can kick goals. Even with this move he'll find it tough to break into the side. The depth barring our talls at least on paper does look a lot better then last year!

I'm just being realistic and that he's not best 22 and that he's just dropped two more spots with Caddy and Prestia been traded in. He I recall was traded in to play the inside tough mid role , but failed.
A bloke who does not know how to follow his man or get the ball is a liability in today's game . Also the hard crash and bash man has been taken out of the game with the afl wanting a more basketball type game. He will be VFL captain for one more year as the reality is not everybody is best 22.
History also has proved that poor footballers are like bad wines as it doesn't matter how long you put them down to age ,they will still not improve. Tambling Jons Hughes Madonna Arnott OHanlon MCBean etc etc are just a few names to freshen up your memory.

TI my memory tells me with the right coaching change in attitude and the right mentality anything is possible. As long as the b ellis of this world are best 22 the kid has a chance. A recall Captain Schultz been a spud with us but look what happened when he when't to port.
The thing with town is he was brought in for this toughness thing and he tried ever so hard to show it forgetting the rest of his football sides. So he had a good practice game by all reports so if he continuous what is to say he cant get in the best 22?

Shulz was a tall man interrupted with injury early on and he was low in confidence and he was then totally devoid of it with Wallet by playing him out of position. Townsend was recruited by an incompetent FD to be Cotchin's bodyguard which made us two men short bc it freed up his man to sit on Trent as Townsend was just a liability. This is why they had a second Tilt at going for inside mids as they finally realised to make Trent better you add quality around him to release the pressure off him. The bodyguard theory was stupid and this is why they added transformers beside him this season.

Ok like i said they got him for one thing and it didn't work out. So with the right coaching and going back to playing his natural game he can't improve. Or better still if he does improve and looks like best 22 we only remember he was a failed bodyguard and don't play him?
I say wait till this pre season and see what he does before we dispose of him. ! good game so far that's a good start.

Maybe Townsend's thread of hope depends on "going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm". (Winston Churchill). Read that somewhere here ;)

So we are back to the Dimmalemma 38 into 22? If Townsend gets a game this year it could only mean we are worse off than last year( which I doubt) as he couldn't get a game in the end in our star studded line up when we were getting trounced.
Poor game plans are generally planned around with the wrong type of players which then puts more stress on your guns.
Hello DH and the RFC of the past 3 years.

M8 we haven't set the world on fire and if you want to stick with the same old same old that's where we will still be. I want us to pick the best 22 every week on form not on names and if this kid has the form i want him played full stop. Aren't people on here saying we just play favs so on well i want to play players that have form period. If say jack has 4 5 6 really bad games cause attitude bad form so on why not drop him till he finds form in the 2s but we are just a team of playing names and that's all. The ellis of this world play week in week out and if we keep on this track wait for another horror year.

Who doesn't , but Townsend ? You missed my point as he's progressed down the hierarchy as we went and got two better players. Now why would that be ??

Ok so you are saying we got 2 better bodyguards for cotch? or 2 better midfielders? You say who townsend? i say why not people were hoping mcbean was the saving grace or the others you mentioned.

Lids use to go through the midfield; so perhaps he has only dropped one place. There has also been a suggestion for him to also play in the forward line. TV & Lids played a lot in the forward line, so perhaps mathematically he hasn't been dropped down any places by our drafts (but you are right, those 2 are ahead of him, just like Lids & TV were). But that was last year. This year so far he is playing well in the scratch matches. Means nothing if he doesn't continue that in the pre-season comp and the season proper. However, if he continues his improved form, then of course he is a chance for games in the 1s. Surely it is too early to tell yet one way or another.

The moneyball scenario has not worked, better to bring in class players/young talent than bog average foot soldiers.

The addition of Caddy and Prestia will add another dimension on the field rather than making up the numbers.

If Prestia for example is having a day out then the tagger that was allocated to Martin/Cotchin has to be moved.

not to mention, using past hierarchy's is ridiculous. That would indicate players never improve.
