Jamo is going to be second ruck. If Williams cant impact forward there is no hope for him.
I actually keen to see a fit wafl side. Jack Williams showed some glimpeses but was taken out of the game cause how shit we were. He also had a few moments in the ruck.

Reckon he’s the type of player we need. Bit like what oscar provided a few years ago as a third tall that pinches in the ruck but Jack is a lot bigger than that oscar was

Waterman, Dewar, Barnett, Foley, Duggan, Chesser, Hurn, Baker and Bazzo were the players who didn’t participate.

All of them bar Baker and Bazzo did work on the opposite oval. From what I saw, Dewar, Chesser, Duggan were all sprinting at top speed. They also did what looked a bit like a ball movement drill with the seven of them - no contact though. All moved well - or in Hurn’s case, as well as you can expect a 35 year old to move.

Baker just watched on and walked around. Must have a little niggle because his training has been backed off significantly this week.

Gaff played exclusively wing and usually lined up on Clark. Jayden Hunt played a bit of wing too. Saw West play minutes there too.

Ryan is covering the ground really well. Kicked a few goals and his defensive pressure was great too. Nearly took a huge hanger in the forward line.

Hunt and Jones produced a few searing runs through the middle of the ground, really using their pace. Jones played HF and HB and was pretty impressive with his evasiveness and willingness to take the game on.

Noah Long very impressive. Doesn’t necessarily stand out as much during normal training but when you get into match sim and actual gameplay, his skills and game awareness really stands out. Gets in the right spots and just looks a natural footballer. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s in the round 1 side.

Shuey played HB and mid, played about 2/3 of the match sim.

Kelly was very good, looked good in the middle and pushed forward to kick a couple. Hewett similar - played some mid but mostly HF, kicked a couple of goals and nearly took an absolute screamer - got up really high.

Winder split his time between HF and HB. Mostly played on Jones when he was in defence.

Yeo and Sheed pretty good.

Jamieson played forward. Got put in the ruck a couple of times but generally it was Williams v Nic Nat.

LittleFires did O’Neill get much of a run through the midfield and how did he go?
I’m pretty sure he was with the mids, but I didn’t notice him much.

They played 3 quarters of match sim - 2 quarters in a row, then 20 odd mins of skill work in their line groups, and then did the last quarter. During the skill work he was definitely with the mids group.

Ankle strappers

Someone at West Coast does not believe in ankle strapping apparently. Heard it on the podcast in the last year or two. Doesn't promote natural ankle strength. Of course they will strap if there has been an injury, though.

Not sure if that person still works there.

Anything on Ginbey??

I was at a training session as a kid and Fraser Gherig came out onto the field to get into it. Someone told Malthouse that he refused to have his ankles strapped and Micky looped the **** out at him. Was both scary and awesome.

Thoughts from Mark Duffield

Nic Naitanui dominated, key players Oscar Allen and Elliot Yeo got through unscathed but West Coast suffered a pre-season injury setback in ramped up match simulation at Mineral Resources Park on Friday morning.
Forward Jack Petruccelle tweaked his left ankle in the opening quarter of the match, received treatment on the sidelines and was limping noticeably before heading to the change rooms after being re-strapped and iced.

The news was better for other Eagles players who mixed and matched teams over three 20-minute periods. The Eagles were stricken by match practice injuries last year and are keen to avoid a repeat of their 2022 misadventures this year.

With Ben Cousins watching on from the Lathlain Park Members’ pavilion, here’s how the Eagles fared.

Nic Naitanui: Was pitted against both Bailey Williams and Callum Jamieson in the ruck and dominated both, getting forward to take a couple of good marks in attack which led to a goal. The most impressive thing from a West Coast perspective was that he rucked for almost the entire 60 minutes and looked lighter and fitter than at any stage in 2022.

Oscar Allen: Operated in attack alongside Jack Darling with Liam Ryan in support for the entire game with a variety of midfield combinations feeding him. Kicked three goals, fed one to Andrew Gaff and played on Jeremy McGovern when the Eagles matched their best forwards against their best defenders in the final 20 minutes.

Tim Kelly: Lighter and looks fitter than last season and was probably the best of the midfielders in the match – switching teams midway as the Eagles lined up their best midfield on one team for the final term with Kelly, Elliot Yeo, Andrew Gaff and Dom Sheed all at Naitanui’s feet.

Elliot Yeo: Moving better that at any stage last year. Appeared to get through the match well and gathered nice touches late after a moderate start.

Jayden Hunt: The former Demon has clearly recruited to give the Eagles speed across the ground and put more speed on the team’s sluggish ball movement. He took the game on in the final term and was involved in a handful of promising passages of play.

The kids: Reuben Ginbey was left with the team that had the Eagles’ first choice midfield when the teams lined up for the final term. Was relatively quiet. Elijah Hewett hit a last quarter purple patch and had some nice touches mainly in attack. Noah Long was reasonably quiet but did extricate himself from pressure brilliantly after a dubious Dom Sheed handball to keep the ball alive for his team. Jai Culley had an excellent chase down tackle on Sam Petrevski Seton early and kicked a long goal late.
