Nothing much of note from the roughly half of todays session I saw

• No Hurn, Shuey, Petch, Chesser or Baker that I saw
• LEdwards was running the outer oval. As was Barnett
• Dewar doing separate work on the outer oval with Chance Bateman
• Everyone else trained including Cole and Duggan
Jamaine Jones has entered the contest for worst haircut and is arguably the clubhouse leader
• Long is more than competent on his left foot. Like that at least a couple of our draftees are dual sided. (Hewett is also very good on his left)
• Allen doing a little bit of light practice with Naitanui on I50 boundary throwins. Not sure how much, if anything, to read into that
• Yeo is moving really well. Looks confident with his body

Nothing else

Simmo did say that Allen could ruck inside 50 this season. Personally I don't mind JD doing it. Thought he executed it quite well when called upon and led to some scoring opportunities.

Makes sense. Nic Nat should only be rucking in the forward 50 if the game is on the line in the last and we need a goal. Otherwise sit back in the hole, almost every ruck in every league is taught to play this way.

I'd rather JD. Oscar needs to be a protected species and JD has enough old man muscle to not get knocked around.

JD also knows more than enough of being a natural forward and have always thought would be nice to add a little string to the bow. Oscar needs to entirely focus on learning to be a main man power forward.

On this would love if JD continues to be unselfish as he has all career and be the #2 to Oscar like he did for Josh. Development year anyway and we forget Oscar is really still developing - would make it a better transition for him IMO

JD pound for pound is stupidly strong, he regulary shifted much larger rucks like children during his time taking those i50's. He's got great core strength and his bodywork for a non ruck is very good (Much more old school using his hips as such).

Much prefer him taking them as Allen likes to jump which opens up all those nasty ankle and knee injuries while JD keeps his feet planted.

He should just do the QLynch/Hawkins manoeuvre of out strength the ruck, grab and goal

Which one of the group named wouldn’t comfortably be best 22
I should clarify that when hearing him speak about the injuries of '22 (not just that snippet) and looking forward to '23 it just seems as though the club believe injuries were the sole reason last year and getting the band back together will solve all issues. Maybe in 2018 but the players are 5 years older now.

Anyhow those players listed are all key

Is this now the fattest ruckman in WA?

View attachment 1602672

It is... but it seems to work for him. Interestingly I'm wondering if Gov's weight loss will work against him as he too seemed to know how to throw his extra weight around when he was in his peak (here's hoping this season he shows us that he is still in his peak).

Jamo ahead of Baz for backup ruck
Nic moving well
Petch with a jarred ankle only and a chance to play against Port and Crows
Chesser continues to be managed carefully
Hurn and Shuey on light duties as part of load management
Luke Edwards has a quad strain
Bazzo back at the club but still a while before he resumes training

Ruck race
If the race to be Nic Naitanui’s ruck support in 2023 at West Coast is a two-man affair, then Callum Jamieson may have taken an early lead over fellow 22-year-old Bailey Williams.

Jamieson spent time practising forward craft as the Eagles did a light skills session at their Mineral Resources Park home base on Wednesday morning.

He is considered the specialist ruckman out of the duo, while Williams is the more natural forward who would better suit the back-up role.

But Jamieson showed some good forward attributes in match simulation last week and was working on his marking and goal kicking on Wednesday. The pair will test themselves again in match practice on Friday.

Meanwhile, Naitanui continues to make good progress in his bid to rebound from a disappointing eight-match season in 2022. He covered the ground quickly in a series of 50-metre sprints away from the main group before leaving the track.

Jack’s back

He didn’t train but Jack Petruccelle was out on the track for part of the warm up and has escaped serious injury from his match simulation mishap on Friday.

Petruccelle jarred his left ankle early in the first of three 20-minute periods played on Friday but scans show he could be available to play in practice matches against Adelaide and Port Adelaide later this month.

The 23-year-old was in good spirits as he and Campbell Chesser warmed up away from the main group.

First-round draft pick Chesser is being taken along slowly after a serious foot injury sidelined him for all of 2022. He had also been injured for much of his draft year of 2021 and had limited football in 2020 because of Covid restrictions.

The 19-year-old is gradually being introduced into more team drills but the likely priority this year will be getting match practice into him, even if it’s at WAFL level, rather than rushing him into the AFL early.

Veteran’s light on duty

Shannon Hurn is being managed carefully through the pre-season and ran laps with skipper Luke Shuey, who played in Friday’s match simulation as a defender but trained away from the main group on Wednesday. Alongside them was second-year big man Jack Williams.

The trio all moved freely, indicating rest rather than injury rehab was the reason for their absence from the main group.

Luke Edwards’ setback

The son of former Adelaide champion Tyson is one of the more serious injury concerns for the Eagles as they get ready to start practice games. Edwards battled a knee issue, then osteitis pubis last season and the club has confirmed he suffered a quad strain in recent days.

He ran on the club’s second oval away from teammates. Edwards, 21, played eight games in 2021 and impressed the Eagles as a depth midfielder but he managed just three games in between injuries last year and is on the back foot again now.

I don’t mean to put a dampener on pre season enthusiasm, but pinning hopes on our older players coming back to make everything better seems a bit nonsensical, many great players finish off their careers perennially injured, when they have to sprint and compete flat out against 20 year olds.
I’t’s only a matter of time before this one does a hammy or that one does a calf, or any other number of injuries, or just ain’t as good as they once were, 2018 is a long long time ago in a galaxy far away.
I really hope we debut a couple of young guns in Rd1, at the expense of experienced players.

Man I'm going to cringe every time this bloke is tackled in the WAFL. That was such a bold punt from O'Brien with that selection, kicking off a list rebuild where we really can't afford to be cooking high draft picks (After Venables & Brander).

So much pressure on him to even get on the park now, let alone perform to a first round standard.

Age of Geelong players entering 2022 (last year)

30 - Duncan, Rohan, Blicavs, Ceglar
31 - Stanley, Dangerfield
32 - Tuohy
33 - Smith, Selwood, Hawkins, Higgins

Age of West Coast players entering 2023 (this year)

30 - Gaff, Cripps, McGovern, Darling
32 - Naitanui, Shuey
35 - Hurn

We have less players that are 30 or over at the start of this year than Geelong did at the start of last year

Doesn’t mean we’ll win a flag, we won’t, but it’s not like those oldies are incapable of still playing good footy

It’s a bit concerning, although his injuries seem to be uncorrelated (knee then freak ankle injury). A lot of his lack of football was mostly due to COVID prior to last year. A silver lining is that Johnson and Sinn were also injured for a lot of last year (other picks we might’ve considered).

His last full competitive match was in year 7

Correct. Most of his games missed were because of Covid
