Gee, I’m excited for Collingwood in 2025! It’s a different feeling because we’ve made list moves that really show our hand in terms of our intentions. Expectations are high and with that comes pressure.

Can Nick get better?

How do Houston, Perryman and Membrey impact the team?

What happens when Mihocek and McStay play together?

What do we get from the senior guys at this stage of their careers?

What do we get from the young guys? Someone always steps up and it’s often unexpected.

How do De Goey, Mitchell, McStay, Mihocek, Elliott, etc who missed chunks last year fare this year?

We also have the privilege of looking forward to young McGuane walking in our doors next November!

Our list looks very good on paper. Probably in no small part due to older guys playing on for fairly modest pay packets.

Is there anyone on our list that you think would be overpaid right now?

Macrae, Reef, Johnson perhaps? Perryman due to the nature of FA? I would think everyone else is taking a little less than they deserve.

Perryman is the one that sticks out to me. Lipinski is probably on a generous salary too.

Would be interesting to know what Lipinski is on.

Dogs wanted to re-sign him but he’d been playing a lot of VFL at the time. Don’t recall having any other competition for his signature though.

I wouldn’t think he’d be on much more than an average wage and he typically plays a lot of games so we are probably getting our money’s worth?

He signed a new three-year deal with us so that probably saw a bump in his wage.

He wouldn’t be on more than $450-$500k which will be the AFL average in 2025 anyway.

Nick looks like he's in for a big year. Might have to go put him down for Brownlow, Norm Smith and Premier tripple bet.

He looks bigger as well. Wont be pushed around in a couple of years the way his body is getting bigger.

I guess these are rhetorical questions but here's my take anyway:
1. Yeah.. Nick will get better again, especially at coping with a close tag.
2. Houston will reignite our transition game. Perryman will add some defensive grunt to the midfield. Membrey could kick 30 goals as a deep lead up forward.
3. Hopefully about the same from the old boys. They look hungry, but need to be managed through the season.
4. Not expecting much, but Ed Allan and Wil Parker are the 2 to watch.
5. De Goey is the concern. Whether he can get back to full fitness. The others should be fine.

My biggest question is about our backline. Last year it had more holes than leaky sieve. Who steps up to fill the Murphy role, is it Dean or maybe Reef? And can Moore & Quaynor, in particular, recapture 2023 form.

Pre-season.
Week 3, Tuesday Main session.

Very big session this morning. I reckon it went for 2 1/2hrs.
They started with the yoyo test, then went into some line drills, then some pressure drills and transitition work.
Followed that was some conditioning running -- or for the rucks, they did some ruck work with Fraser.

Players in attendance:

  • Lippa
  • IQ
  • Maynard
  • Jamie
  • Mitchell
  • JDaicos
  • Schultz
  • Houston
  • Pendles
  • Mcstay
  • Perryman
  • DeMattia
  • DC
  • Allan
  • Frampton
  • Fin
  • TJ
  • Smit
  • Oscar
  • Sidey
  • Hill
  • Ryan
  • Crisp
  • Reef
  • Cochran
  • Membrey
  • West
  • Moore
  • Beau
  • WHE
  • Sullivan
  • NDaicos
  • HH (did some agility work on he sidelines and running)
  • Markov
  • Howe
  • Hayes
  • Johnson
  • Checkers
  • Dean
  • Long
  • Cox

No Jordy or Parker.
From those of concern yesterday, Frampton looked fine though he had left early on Monday.
Cochran must be battling something because while he did the Yoyo Test, and some running, that's all he participated in.
But don't think its too serious.

The Yoyo test.
Maynard and Mitchell didn't participate, they did some kick to kick on the sidelines.
Top 5.
  • Long
  • Hayes
  • Ryan
  • Nick
  • IQ
For someone that runs a lot during games, I was surprised to see WHE struggle at these. sort of things. And the running. Even this time last year, in the shuttle runs he would struggle.

There was parts of the session where they didn't let the draftees do, especially toward the end. They had already gone inside. Just easing them through the first part of pre-season.

Josh was playing in defence, which suggests he'll rotate between hb and wing probably interchanging with someone.
