A third tall, reads the ball well. and uses his pace to dash out of defence. He was playing higher up at CHF either on Cox or WHE today. Lots of spoiling, marking and moving well out of D50I like Reef in defence but don’t think he would play a Dean or Frampton role. More a third or fourth tall Ala Clement
Reef's taller than Murphy..soooo, let's have Murphy develop him. Reef can kick & handball too, which Murphy said he couldn't doA third tall, reads the ball well. and uses his pace to dash out of defence. He was playing higher up at CHF either on Cox or WHE today. You'd also find him taking the kick ins.
Indeed. He has a lot of tricks, reef. Taller, quicker. only 1cm shorter than Dean, so no reason he can't play as a 2nd/3rd tall, the way we use our defenders, is all team defence, they help each other out.Reef's taller than Murphy..soooo, let's have Murphy develop him. And the same height as Noah Balta - that's the player I'd model him on.Indeed. He has a lot of tricks, reef. Taller, quicker. only 1cm shorter than Dean, so no reason he can't play as a 2nd/3rd tall, the way we use our defenders, is all team defence, they help each other out.
That’s funny. Noah is 105 kg of muscle. Have another stab at itAnd the same height as Noah Balta - that's the player I'd model him on.
I think we all thought that was about Murphy's ceiling as a defender, and he surprised us all by being more adept at playing as a legitimate FB. Sometimes the role just makes more sense, even if the size isn't ideal.I like Reef in defence but don’t think he would play a Dean or Frampton role. More a third or fourth tall Ala Clement
I don't really think of Maynard as being considerably smaller than Reef, but he is 5cm shorter... But when it comes to playing on Mason, is there really much difference between giving up 15cm or giving up 20cm?usually on Reef then Cox was on Maynard lol. Now that's giving up a bit of height to say the least.
They probably are just testing Reef on different types of players.I don't really think of Maynard as being considerably smaller than Reef, but he is 5cm shorter... But when it comes to playing on Mason, is there really much difference between giving up 15cm or giving up 20cm?
Mason has a giant height difference on most defenders - It's usually not the defender being able to square up with him that makes the difference, it's just down to being in the right place at the right time. If only we had a 211cm player who'd grown up playing the game, with a strong leap and strong hands, who could really have defenses worried... Maybe as a Category B rookie around June 2025?
Within games, forward lines vary between 1 and 3 talls. He'll have to be able to play on rucks as well as flankers. They probably are just testing Reef on different types of players.
While Reef might be 194 he has never played to that height. More of a 185cm type player. I still have visions of the Hawks defenders out strengthing him with impunityI think we all thought that was about Murphy's ceiling as a defender, and he surprised us all by being more adept at playing as a legitimate FB. I don't think anybody thought Liam Jones would make a quality FB, or even when the Dogs moved Rory Lobb into the backline and he ended up thriving in the back half of 2024.
It's definitely a wait and see, and there's no reason to be dead set on him playing Murphy's role, because if he makes a good 3rd tall/intercepter, Jeremy Howe isn't getting any younger either, so there's a need for that too.
It's just because he's at that 194cm height that there's a bit of intrigue as to what his capabilities might actually be.
There's too much looking at the extras rather than the core role when discussing Reef as a potential tall in our defence. His core role will be positioning, judgement and timing to disrupt aerial entries with a mark or a spoil. How he goes at that is a complete guess. While Reef might be 194 he has never played to that height. More of a 185cm type player. I like it, Murphy was undersized and did just fine.Indeed. He has a lot of tricks, reef. Taller, quicker. only 1cm shorter than Dean, so no reason he can't play as a 2nd/3rd tall, the way we use our defenders, is all team defence, they help each other out.
Agree that the attributes are fine for a tall, but it's a guess how he'll go. Based on attributes, Frampton should be much better than Murphy, but in our system it's about positioning, judgement and timing to kill contests. We'll find out next year by the sounds of it.Indeed. Reef Howe and Moore enough heightI like Reef in defence but don’t think he would play a Dean or Frampton role. More a third or fourth tall Ala Clement
