I said that before. Read the posts. The people were not running it as the Swans approved of & the club withdrew the rights to use the Sydney Swans name. They of course went broke because they now had no angle. No business. The Swans fans no longer went because thx club no longer backed the venue

The social club closed because they could not agree on a new lease with the incoming landlord of the building after it was sold by the previous landlord. This was on top of having to close for repairs for 3 months after receiving storm damage the year before meant it was not financially viable even in a new venue.
The Swans themselves had their own directors, including Richard Colless, sitting on the board of the Social Club which gave the Swans the ability to govern the financial and operating policies of the Social Club. The Swans couldn't say they didn't like how it was being run, because they were in charge of running it.
The Swans had not withdrawn the name from the social club which is shown in the statement from the club itself commenting on the closure the following day which states: "The Sydney Aussie Rules Social Club is licensed to use the name Club Swans under an agreement with the Sydney Swans Football Club.". We backed it to the very end.
Edit: Here are two rather interesting articles regarding our involvement in this whole thing. Regardless of how it ended, let's just say we are glad we are out of it entirely.
Andrew Pridham's Sydney Swans only flirt with pokies
This does appear to be a rather ballsy piece of back-scratching by comrade Andrew Pridham.

Club Swans keeps wolves from door
IN WHAT some may say is an apparent conflict of interest, a listed property fund headed by the chairman of the Sydney Swans, Richard Colless, gave the club's struggling licensed arm a rent holiday worth $1 million.
