Preliminary Final #1: Hawthorn v Adelaide - Pre-Match

How does Clarkson temper the overconfidence?
This would be a genuine concern considering the Geelong experience. This week they will be bombarded with expectation and kudos for their out of control favoritism so how does he get the squad to forget about the Grand Final for now and just fully commit to this game and the match ups required to do the job?

Exactly........havent you seen the little angry man in action. Just ask the wall in the coaches box at the MCG.
Hawthorn could have an ordinary 1st quarter and the little man could go nuts. Even if Adelaide did manage to get off to a flyer, Hawthorn would still believe they can come back and beat any team.......They came back against Geelong, and Sydney after slow starts, especially the Geelong game. Whilst they might have lost the game against Geelong, they had no right to come back from 50 points down against a quality hardened side like Geelong. The question is are Adelaide good enough to get the jump and sustain it for 4 quarters. So far in 2 finals I havent seen Adelaide put 4 quarters together, so what makes you think they can do it against a more battle hardened team.

The Geelong experience is a great wakeup call for all clubs playing finals.........dont learn from your mistakes, learn from the mistakes of others.

He'd probably remind them of last year's prelim, and of the way we strolled out to lose to Richmond earlier this year.

He's going to do the clockwork orange thing and have the players watch both games, eyelids pinned back to make sure the message gets drilled in.

No doubt Clarkson will be focused. And sure - one or two of the players might get ahead of themselves. As long as it's not the whole team strolling out and giving Adelaide a 6 goal start there should be enough opportunity within the game for Clarkson to whip the complacency out of them IF it is a problem. Too much on the line for them to get ahead of themselves. We wasted a HUGE chance in the prelim last year. Collingwood were better on the night, I can concede that - but 3 points shows we had a BIG opportunity to win and didn't take it.

Collingwood did us a favor that night......we would have got rolled by Geelong in the GF.
I doubt anyone could have been Geelong in last years GF.

Richmond dismantled us in the middle. Dominated the ruck and our mids had no defensive mindset and were chasing all day. Innacuracy early also cost us. Every one of Richmond's players also played a blinder.

Richmond are just wierd. Beat Sydney and Hawthorn yet can't get over the gold coast

I just love how the Adelaide mob keep bringing up the Richmond game whilst conveniently forgetting how they blew their opportunity to be minor premier in round 21 up at the Gabba.

If I recall, Brisbane had been playing some real ordinary footy in the lead up to round 21, but somehow managed to knock the Crows off. I dont think it was so much as Brisbane playing awesome footy, but the Crows allowed Brisbane to stay in the game and Brisbane got some belief and cleaned them up.

And for the record, Richmond beat Hawthorn in round 20 of 2008, when Hawthorn were expected to win easily......and that turned okay didnt it.

But all that counts for crap right now.

The pressure not to choke will be immense on the hawks whereas we will go in with pretty much a liscence to roll as we please since no one seems to respect us. Get off to a flyer or ambush them with an early Sandonian ruse that puts the hawks off balance and that choking pressure multiplies. It will take something special though, no doubt. Hawks have a classy list, are rested and playing at home. If we do get up the momentum we carry with us will be fairly formidable.

Sounds like you go in with an excuse to be shit and get soundly beaten.

Hawks will smash us

I detect a serious case of sarcasm.
Hawthorn will be favorites, but in a 2 horse race before the ball is even bounced it is effectively 50/50.
Put it this way, Adelaide have more chance of beating Hawthorn and progressing to a GF than Freeo do right now.

I hope that Hawthorn smash Adelaide, mainly because I hate Mark Aiston, and my mother-in-law is a one-eyed Crows supporter..........and she knows &#% all about football. I think she still believes that it is 1997.

Have to laugh at Adelaide supporters trying to rationalise why they hate Gunston. They hate him because he left. Fair enough. If it was exactly the same circumstances but vice versa they wouldn't hate him. Same thing as Dees fans hating Scully but loving Clark
That's not rationalisation. You're telling us that we are hypothetically hypocritical... maybe. o_O

Simple. Take away their mobile phones.

I see the article on the AFL website that Rory Sloan is suggesting that the Crows will take on Hawthorn man for man rather than trying to shut down particular players. I think a shootout would be a particularly bad outcome for Adelaide.
Perhaps he is trying to bluff.

Adelaide's best chance is to pressure the ball carrier and make Hawthorn dispose of the ball under pressure. If Hawthorn are allowed to play an uncontested style of play you will get carved up just like many other teams before you.
Geelong showed how to do it in round 19, and WC also did it for 3 quarters in week one of the finals.......but were only able to limit the damage after their poor start. But generally Hawthorn rely on their skill and hardness at the contest to beat their opposition. Adelaide cant match it for skill......we saw that in the first 2 rounds of the finals. So I think there best hope is to put immense pressure on the ball carrier. Sanderson will know this from his time at the Pussys.

The question is whether Adelaide can maintain the intensity for 4 quarters and not have to many passengers.

We will have to play out of our skins to win. Every man. We can't afford any passengers at all, as you say (looking at you, Tippet).

I doubt we could take the hawks down man for man. I'm hoping for something unorthodox from Sando. Some inspired position change or something, anything to try and throw Clarkson. That is a one on one battle we can win. We will need the best from our players and something special from Sando (and a bit of luck)

I would throw Joncock, Callinan and Petrenko into that list also.
The fact that Petrenko is out injured may well be a blessing in disguise if Martin comes in.
I dont rate Jaensch if he comes in.

If I was going to look for an X-factor for Adelaide, it would be Henderson or Porplyzia.

Pets has been poor, I would've had him out for Jenkins last week. Agree re Hendo. Johncock is frustrating but his versatility serves us well, likewise Callinan has been below par last couple games but he is a big game player. Is at his best imo roving the packs when Tippet brings it to ground. If Tippet lifts our small forwards become more ominous

Game will be a lot closer than people think.

Adelaide havea good midfield with Dangerfield, Thompson, Sloane, Mackay etc... plus big sauce will be give them silver service.
Added to the face that either Walker or Tippett or both could rip the Hawks defenders a new one.

However I think without Talia Buddy may get off the leash.

Hawks by 5 goals.

I think it will get extremely ugly. Adelaide will need to kick the first 3-4 goals of the game, and even then I think Hawthorn will still win by 5-10 goals. Hawthorn are just on at the moment, Adelaide are a youngish side playing their 3rd final, with an unsettled backline and too much reliance on Thompson, Sloane and Dangerfield in the midfield. Vince played well against Freo, but I can't see him doing much against Hawthorn. The other factor is the MCG, Adelaide have barely played there this year and don't have a great record there anyway. It all points to the Hawks by 60+ in my opinion. If the Hawks don't take the foot off late, then it could very well push out to 80-100 points.
I think the biggest moral of a bet this year is the Hawks to win this game by 40 or more.

I think your problem is going to be Sewell and Mitchell. These 2 have been sharking the opposition ruck tapouts for the last couple of months.
Sewell is becoming the Hawthorn Barometer.

Will Clarkson tag Dangerfield........Liam Shiels has been playing the tagging role for Hawthorn for most of the year, but I doubt he has the body to go with Dangerfield. Dont be surprised if Jordan Lewis gets a job on Dangerfield.

Wont be my problem.. im an Eagles fan... my problem was last night :(. That will be a problem for the Crows for sure they are great in and under players... I can see Van Berlo taking Mitchell and he will have to do a hell of a job.

Who gets Dangerfield will be interesting... not sure you can let him roam by himself and I think Shiels might be the man for the task given he can run with Danger... Lewis or Sewell to take Thompson.

Right you are........

If Lewis doesnt get the job on Dangerfield, then he plays across HF. So the problem then comes on Adelaide......who can take Lewis in the air and around the ground.

He will speak about last years disappointment in the prelim. No more will be said.

Thats true.. there are problems for both teams....does Shoenmakers play on Tippett or Walker? How does Gibson play his third man up role if he has to take one of these guys.. does Gilham come in to help....

Despite people thinking it will be one way traffice there are some interesting points to consider... do think the Haks will win though.... just too talented.

Also dont get this over confident talk? There is no way no how the Hawthorn players will be over confident going into this game... they know how hard it is to win a premiership and get to this stage of the season... they wont be taking anything lightly.
