Discussion Preliminary Final: St Kilda vs Western Bulldogs

Just a quick question off-topic as I cannot post threads:

How do we measure our form compared to the Cats?

The Cats smashed the Wobbles whereas we limped over the line in a thriller. History has shown that a close preliminary final win is better preparation than a blowout win but geez the Cats looked awesome and are suddenly back to flag favouritism with the bookies.

I would like to think that the Dogs were far better opposition than the Pies as they had come off an easy victory the previous week whereas the Pies played their GF against Adelaide. The Pies were also in the game for a half and dropped motivation when it was clear that they couldn't win.

How would have the Dogs faired if they played the Cats in the PF instead of the Saints?

Cheers!

We also kicked 9.4 to 5.6 after quarter time. In a low scoring game we outscored them after quarter time rather convincingly in the end.

ok. I've been convinced that we were the better team on the day. I stand corrected.

But will it do against the cats? I take heart by the fact that some of our stars had an off day (Goddard and Gram) and Schneider and Milne where hardly sighted (Milne's goal a lonely exception), so we can and will have to turn it up a notch or two

I'd like to just put my bit in I guess.
3 points I'd like to make.

a) Our defence held up well. So many times they launched inside fwd50, only for our defence to 'cut them off'. Alot of their goals came from bouncing over our def's into the square. They held up well, and should be praised for not succumbing to the amount of footy the Bulldogs allowed themselves.
b) We need to stamp the game earlier. Definitley. We need to be able to play well from q1-0:01. This means using the ball cleanly as much as possible, and attacking, (not allowing the wb so much ball, and counter-attacking to greater affect)
c) Riewoldt is amaziing. This guy saved us with some wonderful contested marking. Diving or not, he played magnificently, and if he can lead us to a flag, he'll be remembered up there with Carey and Baldock.

We had quite a few passengers on friday who should be relieved to play next week and make up for some poor efforts.

PROS-

Let me just get Roo out of the way early and say what a champion footballer and leader he is. Backline was solid as always and even though Zac and Raphael got off to a shaky start they turned it around and saved our bacon more then once in that 2nd half. Jason Blake is warrior and gives nothing away. Gilbert was good and Baker as well.

Midfield was great but it lacked support from our 2nd teir mids who will get a mention in my cons rant. Hayes and Dal Santo in particular were instrumental. Gardiner and King did well, Gardiner especially.

Kosi's tackling.

CONS-

Where do I start.

Gram and Fisher had some disgracefully soft efforts in that first half which just ruins any chance of team momentum. Ray made some terrible decisions. He and Gram are our two outside carriers and neither delivered that vital run breaking the lines. Milne and Schneider were quiet again and GF day is ripe for them if they really want to redeem themselves and take the pressure off Riewoldt. Both guys MUST get on the scoreboard on Saturday.

Eddy went missing and just doesn't even come into the picture like a Gwilt does without being super so I would expect him to miss this week. He doesn't strike me as a guy who can do alot in Big games other then put some tackles on playing as a forward.

Kosi while he did some nice things needs to nail a couple goals on Saturday. Hope he is frothing at the mouth for some big marks and goals.

Conclusion- We played poorly and won. Way too many errors and perhaps the week off wasn't the best thing for us. Take nothing away from the Dogs who Geelong struggled with a couple weeks ago also. But St Kilda and Geelong both handled Collingwood comfortably so it's even money at this stage for me and I'll be happy to take underdog status.

Next week we need 22 stars. Not 10 like we had.

Very very Lucky to get through. A win based on a few very poor umpiring decisions that turned the game and one player who stood up. Hope that big roo win the Brownlow best playing in the comp by a fair margin he was awesome.

He's spot on about the umpiring too. If Kosi was paid that clear mark 35 m out early in the 3rd our momentum would have been unstoppable and we would have ran away with the game.

I thought he meant that if a free was paid the first time Riewoldt was knocked to the ground (not the 4th time, and after Lake got a warning after he'd done it twice and Big Willy also got one in) he would have kicked 7?

Good luck for next week, the game could have gone either way in the end, and you had a bit of luck and we didn't. But really you have to ask yourself if Dawson bumbs Tommahawk in the GF in the same way Lake did and he goes down and they get a free right in front of goal at a crucial moment, i'm sure you would be spewing too. I just hope for either teams sake they let it go in the GF as if the match is decided by a joke like that, it will just be wrong.

Good luck and may the best team win.

Agree I'd be spewing that they picked one out. But if I then found out that Zac had been warned and he did it again then I know who I'd be most disappointed with. Never give them an opportunity.

Only watched the first third and the doggies were snipping all over the park. I can not believe the uproar over the Dal Santo goal. the ball was in general play and ended up with Roo marking 30 out on a 45 degree angle. Then it was taken back.

Are you kidding?

Dal Santo's goal was the first for the Saints. How do you think he got the opportunity to kick a goal (albeit from the boundary)?

Another free kick .

And that free kick was perhaps one of the worst. A player is NOT holding the ball when he gets a CLEAR kick away when tackled. muppet:eek:

Did you see what happened after the free was paid, Doggy09?

Would have been a shot at goal regardless of the umpire's decision.

Let me guess, Riewoldt got 'put down' again?

I agree what Lake did was stupid and deserved a free kick IF he was warned not to put Riewoldt down (even though it was very soft bumb and a dive by Riwwoldt). However, given Kosi came in and applied at least the same force to Lake if not more and put him down, a reversal was warranted. Double standards:rolleyes:

If the dogs played the man less and the ball more they probably would have won. Having said that, if our players run at the ball was not continually taken out I guess we would have performed better. Lake effectively sheparding 100m off the ball was penalised as it should be. Baker got 6 weeks or something for doing that last year to farmer and the umpires did not even see it.

You dererved to lose and did. Maybe next time play the game and don't go out with the attitude we can only beat them if we hurt them outside the rules of the game. Although that didn't work during the regular season did it?

Weren't we talking about the holding the ball decision? Where did that go??

Hargrave kicked straight to the Saints and then someone marked and thought they had a shot at goal before it was taken back deeper in the pocket to Dal Santo.

While it was a pathetic decision, either way a shot on goal even if the umpire paid the correct decision and called play on would have occurred.

the ball rolled along the ground and the saint player picked it up and looked to center then realized it was a free.

Was only from memory, which I was confident about. Perhaps I'm wrong, but would that not have been a shot at goal situation? I'm recalling a Saints player being in the clear with the ball after Hargrave's kick and delivering a short kick for a mark and shot on goal. Might have got mixed up with another situation.
