News Premiership duo Brent Guerra and David Hale join Fremantle coaching staff

Did you complain when David Hale first crossed from North to us, especially when he would have given us a detailed inside analysis of each North player, their coach and playing rules etc?

The answer being obviously no, so I cant see this as a problem when its applied the other way.

Anyway, Freo have a different structure to Hawthorn. A dominant ruckman and a stay at home full forward. Different set up and game plan to ours. The skills, well everyone has to be able to kick, mark and handball to some degree and that's just practice to improve. We cant put a patent on that.

I can see that you don't think there are any issues here. Which is fine as I was just throwing it out there for debate.

For what it's worth, my view is that Hale crossing as a player from North isn't really a like for like comparison. In the current situation, he's been part of a premiership system and is now employed by our 2013 GF opponents and 2015 prelim opponents.

I completely get that it'll take more than him and Guerra to topple us over; it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I have no issue with it. Hale wants to be a coach now that he isn't a player. I don't begrudge a three time premiership Hawk the chance to follow his next dream.

Hawthorn have focused on kicking during preseason since Clarko arrived at the Hawks. One preseason for Freo isn't going to close that gap.

Teams need to innovate if they want to pass us sooner rather than later. Can't just play catch up. Not when Clarko himself is constantly innovating.

Im quite happy for Freo to catch up to where we were last year.

Clarko will already have us much further ahead.

Like maybe trying an intense supplements program?

Gee there is an over inflated emphasis about coaching making the difference on this board, imo.

Clarko is a good coach, history proves that, but he has one hell of a good side to work with. Give him average cattle and it wouldn't matter how innovative he is, or how far ahead of the pack he is in terms of where the game is going bla bla bla.

To suggest Lyon has a side the equal of Clarko is ridiculous.

Every "outstanding" coach has had a pretty special team to make it happen. Thats not taking anything away from Clarkson, but some of the comments about game plans, ahead of the pack, bla bla bla do take away from how special this playing group really is.

Give Clarko an average side and he'll develop roles and a gameplan that perfectly accentuates their strengths while protecting their weaknesses from being exposed. He'll then hire the right people to develop drafted talent and recruit on a needs basis from other clubs.

Clarko didn't just stumble across this group. It was meticulously crafted by him. Drafting, recruiting and gameplan/strategy are all mixed in there.

He's a footballing architect.

Great post. Every year people try and guess who we will draft and fail. When we drafted Billy people thought we were mad to get another endurance player. That stroke of genius will likely play itself out this year.

There is definitely a long haul approach. I remember the chip chip kick approach when it was first brought in. It was horrible but Clarko had a long term approach to building a game plan around great kicking and my word it has paid off

The other thing about Clarko has been the long haul approach each season. Don't spend all your tickets early on and do enough to get in the big dance and unleash.

The guy is a freaking genius. And you know he's awesome because how many opposition supporters come up with ways to bag him out?

Great point, Clarko has all these 4 time and triple premierships to choose from. He has it easy!

He was pretty lucky to walk into a premiership contender in 2004. The team has pretty much coached itself for 12 years.

AFL is a billion dollar industry, top clubs like Freo, Sydney etc would already know most of Hawthorn's game plan/intell inside and out and vice-versa.

Lyon was probably trying to add two blokes who have been to the big dance and performed and problem hoping for that 1% of Hawthorn's secrets that they don't already know.
Will be interesting to see how it goes seeing as one of them was reasonably good at kicking goals.
