He’s looking bloody good. I hope he has a cracking year.
The only reason I would hope he has a decent year in the AFL side is so he can be traded for something of value. With laird and Keays providing experience and Sloane coming back, there's no way we should be bringing him back into a permanent midfield position.

Might help us get that elusive SANFL flag.
He won't qualify for finals. All it would take is one bad loss and Nicks will play him in the AFL.

Matt Crouch is only 27 people. He could actually fit into a rebuilding team just fine. As for the spot he takes it is up for debate but if can redeem himself this year we want that.

on his day I'd prefer him to Keays the butcher.
You're just replacing one guy who butchers the footy with another who butchers the footy (and can't run). Keays is a blue collar mid but he can at least outrun/outwork his opponent.

I get it. Negative metres gained doesn't look great on the stats sheet but I'd argue in a skills contest that Crouch would do better than Keays who genuinely cannot kick the ball to a target 15m away.

Crouch's disposal is way better than Keays, it's not even a contest. His kicking is arguable better than Lairds loopy efforts.

But I still maintain his best position is HF, that's where you have your accumulators rather than making a young midfielder bust their arse in that position like we have done for the last decade is dumb.

If you're an accumulator, surely you should be able to find the ball anywhere

Imo laird disposal is a bit better than Crouch's, but laird is better defensively. They can both rack it up. Hence Laird > Crouch.

Crouch's disposal is better than Keays, but Keays brings a very strong defensive game as well and is quicker out of a stoppage (he has more power). They're probably on par, but I still prefer Keays due to his sheer work rate and effort.

He's just not needed and given we're trying to pump games into young mids, it would be dumb to play all three.

Totally out of leftfield, could Mat Crouch be repositioned to become a quarterback type player in defence? He can rack up getting ball - its never been an issue. Could he be the loose type player that just floats, sweeps up possessions and hands them off to the runners?

In terms of mid balance it’s either him or Laird

And Laird is miles in front on last years form

I would love to see Laird move back to Half Back this year.

Ideally we should be giving 6 players midfielders signifcant time at the coal face.

Old guy (one of Keays/Crouch/Laird) alongside Berry, Schoenberg, Soligo as the main players with Rankine & Rachelle to spend a chunk of time running through there.

Which makes Dawson in defence even more crazy. How the hell are we going to fit all these players in
A bench of Hamill, Hinge, MM and Parnell. Maybe make Borlase the sub to complete the set.

Its not as tough as you think.

For every one average small/medium defender you pick - you just leave a few more average small/medium defenders out (Parnell, Jones, Hamill, McPherson, Milera, Doedeee, Hinge).

I’d argue Keays is a better ball user than Matt

At least he takes the game forward

Then he does a whole lot of other stuff without the ball that’s better
