I would love to see Laird move back to Half Back this year.

Ideally we should be giving 6 players midfielders signifcant time at the coal face.

Old guy (one of Keays/Crouch/Laird) alongside Berry, Schoenberg, Soligo as the main players with Rankine & Rachelle to spend a chunk of time running through there.
Nah Laird is playing too well in mid , better to use the other capital we have eg Milera Parnell Hamill

Its not as tough as you think.

For every one average small/medium defender you pick - you just leave a few more average small/medium defenders out (Parnell, Jones, Hamill, McPherson, Milera, Doedeee, Hinge).
Milera is a lock. A fit Doedee is a lock. Smith is a lock. So is Butts. That’s 4. Worrell given how he finished last year, if he’s fit he has to play. You’d think Murray would be too. Thats 6 defenders, 4 with reasonable height. If Max is playing that’s 7 and I haven’t factored in a small defender yet or Dawson.

I get it. Negative metres gained doesn't look great on the stats sheet but I'd argue in a skills contest that Crouch would do better than Keays who genuinely cannot kick the ball to a target 15m away.
In a skills contest yes

In a game of football where things aren’t as engineered and you have opponents chasing you - no

Maybe Dawson is playing midfield 🙏

Depends on what our goals are for 2023 right... Are we trying to climb the ladder in 2023? Cause if we aint - not much point keeping Laird in the guts.
There's your solution, put Laird at half back where he started.

Now we have 9 behind the ball.

Need to campaign to change the 6/6/6 rule.

I cannot believe after watching the last three seasons of football of this club there are still some supporters talking up ben keays and matt crouch and even rory sloane as players that can possibly take us forward into the future..

Its just fxxkn astounding.

These lads are either shit or, in sloanes case, cooked and are the exact reason we have had the worst midfield in the comp for a while now..

And people are still delusionally clinging to them??

Wow.

If you're an accumulator, surely you should be able to find the ball anywhere
Exactly right

If Crouch spent time at half forward he'd find the footy. There are things to criticise him for but he gets the ball.

Been disappointing that he's never been even given a stint elsewhere

That's fine, we'll just play 9 guys in defense, I mean the ball will be down there a fair bit

You act like we didn't play those 10 defenders in rd 22 of 2022 - Is it that much of a stretch to add Michaelenney?

Just can’t see it given where he’s training.

I just can’t work out what Nicks has planned.

I can see Worrell missing and if he’s fit and that happens, just so he can play Dawson back there, the board should sack him Rd 1 because a friggin idiot.
I hope Worrell can play one of the trial games

Dawson will prob play a mixture of back and wing to start but I’m concerned it will be less wing as time goes by with Nicks liking the safety blanket

I think we're in the denial stage of the seven stages of grief.

I'd say we're at bargaining. You've got people saying we should try Crouch in the forward line or as a half back.

I think it is pretty simple. He is a MID and that is it. No versatility to his game.

With Laird and Keays there is no room for Crouch. At least with Laird and Keays they offer flexibility with their versatility, being able to play multiple positions. This assists with rotations and getting exposure to the likes of Berry, Schoenberg, Soligo, etc. through the midfield.

It is peak BigFooty to suggest that Matt Crouch could play half back or half forward at AFL level.

Half forward, he is behind:

McAdam
Rachele
Rankine
Pedlar
Murphy
McHenry

Half back, he is behind:

Smith
Milera
Jones
Parnell
Dawson
Doedee
Hamill

Tough call on Matt unfortunately unless he can reinvent himself somehow.
