Crouch is a slower player with worse tackling but he's also better at positioning and reading the play versus McHenry/Murphy - hence why he gets a ton of ball

He could end up closer to where the ball will be in the forward line which would neutralize his issue with pace
Except, the FWD area is tighter with less space .....Crouch FWD would simply expose his lack of acceleration out of congestion

This is probably the best interview about various Crows players & roles ...Rankine, Pedlar, Milera, and Dawson

46:20 - "He's a monster that bloke." - Rory Laird will be in Doedee's team.

48:40 - Wayne Milera has been training with the backs and his Fantasy stocks are increasing.

55:35 - Will it be Jordan Dawson who takes the bulk of the kick-ins?
What I got from that was Rankine and Keays likely to play mid and forward

Missed the Dawson part will tune in again

It's only tighter during stoppages, during transition it's quite open, or at least that's how we usually play it. Crouch is a very good contest player so I have no doubt he'd thrive in congestion, it's more a question how bad he'd be on open/outside/fast play

Playing him forward is as bad of an idea as someone that can't kick 30 meters or has no goal sense

I don't want him to play there (or in the best 22 at all), but if we're tossing up between Crouch, Murphy and McHenry for some reason I wouldn't instantly rule out Crouch
Crouch in the Fwd line.. the Opposition could just walk it out our F50.

Correct, just like they already do, which is why we need to stop worrying about ineffective "defensive forwards" and get dangerous smalls that deserve respect, are dynamic and punish teams on the scoreboard

Yeah we had to play a midfielder on him instead of our usual forwards to get a result
It’s already looking better with no Rowe ( and likely only 1 of Mchenry / Murphy at most ) and Rankine Keays Rachele Soligo Pedlar likely to play forward when they aren’t playing mid

Matt Crouch doesn’t take any of those spots as a forward

I'd say we're at bargaining. You've got people saying we should try Crouch in the forward line or as a half back.
Yep.. its so strange.

The game has gone past the lad.

Why try and shuffle him into another spot and deny a more talented youngster that position?.

Its madness.

The game no longer accomodates for midfielders that are slow, dont do any damage to the opposition but accumulate big possession counts by basically having 5-10 half decent disposals out of their 35-40 disposal totals for the match..

I would literally play

Rankine
Rachele
Pedlar
Cook
Nank
Newchurch
Bond
Taylor

In that HF/smaller forward role before I’d ever consider crouch..

And then before I ever considered crouch I’d try and get Matt Wright out of retirement and ask the AFL to allow us (out of pity) to list and play Wright!.

Fxxk me… if we are at the point of comsidering giving crouch a role like that then we shouldve held onto Rowe..

Settle down, there's no madness, he wasn't best 22 last year, he's been told he won't be getting another contract offer and we tried to trade him just a couple of months ago.

Can't blame the bloke for giving it another crack, he's there, footy's what he does, what is he meant to cry in the corner?

If thats the decision they have made then they shouldve payed him out at the end of last year and freed up the list spot.

For three whole years we saw David Mackay given a year extention on his contract and each time the club apologists on here said “calm down, he’ll just be a break glass option and will be in the sanfl all season”

And each year he’d go on to play nearly 20 fxxkn AFL games!..

Then we find out that the club even tried to encourage him to play on for another year after the lad himself anounced his retirement!

This fxxkn club cannot be trusted. They have proven through their own actions they cannot move on from their veteran players. They cling to them like baby’s to security blankets..

I hope you are right and they arent gonna play him but if Matt crouch is on the list then, on the clubs past form, it wont surprise me in the least to see his name on the AFL 22 come round 1.

Sure, I'd also play all those players before Crouch

But if you were forced to choose one, would you play Crouch, Murphy or McHenry?

Unofficial preseason game against Freo in Perth, Friday 24th Feb at 6.30pm AEDT.

Official preseason game against WC also in Perth, Friday March 3rd at 7.40pm

Theorising internal trial that has been mentioned by club this would likely be the Wednesday or Friday before the Fremantle match on the 15th or 17th Feb?

Because if he’s playing out midfield mix sucks and it’s less game time for our developing mid.

Have a crack Jenny at naming our midfield with Crouch, who are you including and leaving out to fit him in?
If he's playing WELL our midfield won't suck. It's not rocket science.

Our defensive stocks are also incredibly bare. But I think Mic is gonna be a gun for us.
It looks like we have just 2 big key backs - Butts and Murray, we have 4 3rd talls in Doedee, Worrell, Michalanney and Borlase (although Worrell has the height to be a key back but he is a more attacking type suited to 3rd tall role). We have a number of smaller defenders.

I would have liked them to try Himmelberg as a key defender this preseason and beyond

Perhaps they should have, but to what end? He's good for standards, he's fighting for a new club, he's good for SANFL, there's a small chance he may reinvent himself as something useful - perhaps as a leader rather than a player.

Would you be upset if he did end up having a great year?

BTW I don't want to see him in our team at all, can't see how a good year for Crouch would be better than youth, he won't reinvent himself with pace or run and carry, it's just really hard to see any role. Moreso with Sloane back in the mix who at least adds really strong leadership on field. Crouch is behind Berry, Laird, Keays, and Sloane, we hardly have room for four of them, definitely not five. I just don't think we would put Crouch in, unlike you.
