i think he's a fair way off TBH. Midfield remains a massive weakness, especially with Sloane being in there. And Tex will be a force scattered throughout only about half a season and our key defenders are a little suspect. As are locks like Smith and Milera back there. Reckon it all looks ok on paper, but when we revert to experience and continuity, we'll come undone.

How do we measure continuity besides ingrained opinions? What would be considered a fair benchmark?

Having a quick look through last years numbers - for all teams - besides West Coast we had the least number of regular players (missed 4 games or less). Significantly less continuity than finals sides with only the Hawks , Giants, Bulldogs and North at a similar level.

Now it felt like we had a good run with injury so that would unlikely be the reason why we had more changes than other teams

So the stats say we had - excluding a Covid ravaged West Coast - the least continuity in terms of players for the whole of last year

Perhaps we can reduce the beating of that drum?

We need to rotate the sub on/off to manage players & keep them fresh.

Both older & younger players.

My pick for round 1 is Pedlar as am impact player.

Not sure Pedlar is the impact player yet - needs to get some games under his belt.

Reckon the sub should be a Sholl, Jones type - possibly even Keays at some point

I find myself sometimes replaying sloane kicking the first goal of the 2017 grand final to hear the roar of the crowd, and of course I turn it off there….but oh how I miss the big games….I hope we are back contending in finals soon…

I allow myself a few more minutes and turn it off after Eddie kicks the 2nd.

Sholl can only play one position - I don't think he makes sense as a sub.

But other players have flexibility and Sholl has a good knack of finding the footy. So if he were sub then a Hinge or Jones on the wing could roll back, other players shuffle around

At this stage guys like Hamill, McHenry, Jones and Pedlar don’t find much of the footy, although all would be up for consideration, so I think that gives Sholl a chance

Sholl would be a good sub and has done a decent job before but he seems way down the pecking order at the moment, Nicks seems to have stamped his papers

Sholl did extremely well as the sub in week 1 last year.

Sholl is one of my favorites, so I over rate him more than many on here.

Would love to see him get more time in the best 22. At his best he can be an elite winger IMO, but most importantly he is a real point of difference to our current midfield mix.

I just can’t see him getting an opportunity, Sloane will take one wing, Hinge/Jones the other with cameos from Dawson.

But apart from Dawson, he’s the more true winger than the others.

I watched it in full last year for the first time.

It's staggering that we actually had the first 3 scoring shots of the second quarter and could've built a bit of a lead, and were actually still leading late in the first half.

The midfield shat the bed in the first 5 minutes of the 3rd, when Richmond kicked three, and we gave up.

Which is one thing Nicksy has taught the team…. don’t give up.

Nicks obviously doesn't want his wingman kicking 3 goals a game like Sholl did yesterday

I think something happened during half time, everybody switched off. Anyhow moved on from it my post was more about us being amongst finals again and missing the feeling of losing your voice after a finals win. Hope we are there again soon.

It's slightly concerning how bad some of our leadership group players look so far.

Keays, Smith and ROB.

Keays I assume it's a fitness thing given he had an interrupted PS.

Smith I think the end is looming. Has lost a yard or two.

ROB I don't know what his problem is. Feel like he needs a proper stint in the SANFL. That contract is a shocker.

Doedee looked much better against Freo at least.

It feels pretty early in the year to jump off a senior player. How are you feeling about Tex? He hasn't got near it this entire season.

Smith was noticeably out of step with other players. Others were trying to retain composure with the ball, use it constructively.

He's still a throw it on the boot and hoof it long merchant.

Which is a deeply ingrained first instinct for him (and some others) which we'll only move past with selection because he's not learning a new style now

Two of those three struggled at times last year though.
