I think a lot of "game day" coaching occurs prior to matches these days, in terms of optimizing setups to specifically match an opponent and beat them.

Two coaches that have done this very well have been Alistair Clarkson and Damien Hardwick. Couple of unique tweaks here and there to disrupt an opponent while largely playing their way

Contrast this to someone like Ken Hinkley who is very one dimensional

Yup. It's probably that, being able to kick a group into gear when they've had a bad quarter or are off early and when to go to a preset plan B. But even that, a lot of it blends into man management.

Indeed. Though Hinkley has been the wrong coach for that Port team for half a decade now. A coach that lets the game come to him with a group that needed someone to drag them to the next level in '17-'18.

I am going to put my balls on the line here and say that Izak will be better than Eddie and he will be close to if not as good as Andy McLeod that is how highly I rate his skillset..I hope I am right!!

Big call and one that I **** with.

Rankine is a different player to McLeod, but really, he is certainly in a position where if he lives up to his potential, he could emulate most of McLeods impact on the fabric of the club (i'm not going to go as far as to say multiple norm smiths).

After all, Adelaide is crying out for a game-changing superstar at the moment, and Rankine does have that quality to be that, alongside capturing the imagination.

The reason I say he could be better than Eddie is that he can already do what Eddie could inside forward 50 in terms of the freakishness (he has not yet kicked the goals Eddie did - but in terms of pure talent he is there), but he looks very much like he can transition into midfield which Eddie didn't so would make him a more versatile player and there comes the McLeod comparisons and I base that on the latent talent of the guy. As I said, I hope I am right (and that would go for all crows supporters) as Andy is an all time great and one of the coolest and most sublime players of the recent era, but Izak looks also to be a rare player with his skillset and IF he can really harness it for his career, look out AFL

Aren’t you the recipient of one?

Yes he is, I’m waiting for him to choose.

Either a bottle of 2017 RWT with a few choice letters on the label (for his drinking and consumption only) or an unmarked bottle of 2017 RWT which I will hand over to the charity of his choice.

The ball at this point in time is in his court.

Just checking if you’ve had a vote on Survivor2.. we don’t want Pooort beating us…

I know for a fact we had big interest in Harry Barnett but he went a bit early for us to be able to upgrade collateral wise, obviously he was the only one they rated. Personally I'd have given Will Verrall a shot late/rookie, really liked his athleticism and tapwork but there were apparently big questions on his endurance so maybe that scared us off. He eventually went to the Dees at Pick 14 in the rookie draft.....another team with decent rucks already albeit aging..

Thoughts after the pre season:

I don't normally make big calls but I'm fairly bullish this year. I reckon we're gonna push for the 8. We've got former leaders looking good without the captaincy burden. Our actual captain is an elite talent. Laird is looking like a beast again in the midfield. Our next gen I think will take the next step.

Sharpest pre season I've seen in a while. We've looked pretty average for quite a few years now so it's nice for a change. Look sharp with skills and ball movement.

Positives:
Rankine could really be anything. We were building a strong forward line but he takes it to another level. Quiet tonight but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Two big calls - Soligo has elite potential and I see some young ablett junior in Rachele. Soligo oozes class and rarely does anything wrong. Rachele turned a corner. Looked hungry at the contest and is a class above when he gets it. Has agility, smarts and very powerful. Going to be exciting watching where these two end up as players.

Fog showing he's locked in that good form from last year. Starting to win a fair amount of 1v1s against good defenders. Huge talent.

Berry top 10 bnf coming up. He's adding strings to his bow. A grade is all we need from him.

Laird looking even better. His midfield craft can still improve and he's shown good signs so far.

Schoenberg very strong pre season. Adds a different dynamic to the midfield as his first instinct is to take the game on and regularly gets the ball at pace. Disposal looks tidier than the same time last year.

Parnell has arrived as a small defender. Defends well and is a natural attacking footballer when he has the ball. Smart player

Michalaney looks very very good. Natural footballer and strong 1v1. Has built a decent frame in one pre season. Will play games and perform.

Who wouldn't want Hinge in their best 22? Highly underrated player imo. Has all the traits you look for and underrated disposal.

Sloane pretty good on the wing.

McAdam looks to have taken his game to another level. Will be really interesting to see where he ends up this year. Starting to look like an experienced footballer. Could already see signs of this last year.

Doedee cops a lot of crap, but I thought he had a pretty decent pre season. Strong defensively. Not taking a huge amount of intercepts though.

Dawson is Dawson. I don't have a problem playing him in defence. Our defence looks a bit shaky still and he's a rock back there. The way the game is played now he's still able to set up play in the forward half anyway.

Himmelberg very solid pre season and starting to look like he feels he belongs at afl level. A decent part time ruck and uses the ball really well.

Keane looked really promising.

Didn't mind Brown actually. Has a good inside game.

Dowling also showed some nice signs. Great size.

Both Murphy and McHenry out of the 1st team! This might actually be the biggest positive of the pre season! We've gone from having a plodder small forward line to a very slick and dangerous one.

Negatives:

Butts and Murray. Not terrible, but they didn't fill me with huge confidence going into the season. I don't love that we're looking to use Butts more as an outlet out of defence. He's got okay disposal, but has limits. Murray misses a lot of targets for someone who has a nice looking kick on him. Hasn't really improved this area.

TT didn't put his hand up unfortunately. I don't have concerns long term, but would have been nice for him to stand up.

Hamill overtaken by Parnell. I really like Hamill so I'm a bit bummed that he's been pushed out. However he's been replaced by someone who has him covered in most areas other than 1v1 and height. So we're no worse off.

Rucks are mediocre. I don't care so much about this so long as the opposing ruck isn't dominating. Would be happy to replace ROB with Himm and TT doing half half. Gets TT into the game.

Other notes:

Pedlar looked to be trying too hard in the first two matches. Just wasn't working for him. West Coast game was very different and you can see why the club likes him. Hopefully that was the game the settles him down and we start to see him flourish.

Milera didn't stand out like I was hoping. Thought he was okay. Used the ball well and was calm under pressure. Didn't take the game on as much as I'd like. Hopefully he gets that confidence back as there's still a role for him imo.

Not sure what to do with Crouch and Keays. Looks like they've decided that Keays will be a role player up forward. Crouch had a very good pre season but I really don't think there's a spot for him given we need to prioritise Berry, Schoenberg and Soligo with majority midfield time (outside of laird). It would be nice to get some trade value out of him but that's not going to happen if he's plonked in the Sanfl. Tricky one.

The Rachele call is one I saw last night the way he moved through the midfield last night.

Low centre of gravity, power and has time.

Midfield is his go I reckon.

Victoria Country: Josh Rachele
Kevin Sheehan Medallist (Best & Fairest Division One): Josh Rachele – Victoria Country (Murray Bushrangers/Shepparton Swans/Notre Dame College)

Josh Rachele (Murray Bushrangers)
179cm | 73kg | 11/04/2003
Midfielder/Forward

Class with a capital ‘C’, the Country co-captain took out the Kevin Sheehan Medal (Division 1 MVP) and his side’s own MVP award with three sensational performances throughout the carnival. His talent can be summed up with one play in Country’s last game against SA, where he instinctively tapped the ball on over his shoulder to Ben Hobbs at full flight who finished the play off with a goal. Does some freakish things and constantly looks a threat around the ball with his agility and ability to break away from congestion, using both to good effect at forward stoppages. Has obvious leadership quality too and really lifted in trying to drag Country over the line in their loss to WA, having 32 disposals, six marks, four breaches of each arc and 0.3. A star in the making.
