AFLW 2024 - Round 10 - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
He looks pretty good with the short hair. Good on him.well done to BBB on losing the mop for a good cause.
It was annoying me there were no stats so I thought I’d give it a go. Difficult with dodgy commentary, super wide TV shots and lots of similar haircuts around the half back flank. I only did it for the first four periods.Just checking again - anyone got the stats for the game?
Given I had to watch closely, I’ll add my two cents on how I thought they played too.
May - typical game, solid, picked up plenty of his kicks from kick out play on as usual.
Van Rooyan - came on for Lever in the second half and struggled to get involved. Still had a physical presence on occasions, but this may have been a good expectation reset for the fans and him.
Harmes - not much chop really even when given some centre bounce attendances in the second half.
Petracca - very influential game given he spent quite a bit of time outside the midfield. Five shots at goal for 3.1 and an OOB. Also setup another five scoring opportunities. Had 16 touches to half time so he had a much quieter second half.
Grundy - did look a bit cumbersome and off the pace of it, won plenty of hit outs though and like Gawn when he didn’t win it he also didn’t allow the opponent to get a clear win.
Viney - ok game from him, a bit sloppy with his disposal. Found himself around half back quite a bit.
Lever - was very involved early and pushed quite high up the ground and seemed to be a bit more attacking than he was in 2022. Looked lively until he had to get subbed out in the second period.
Spargo - rarely sighted playing half forward role, but when he got the ball he made good decisions. Eight disposals for three score assists illustrated that.
Brayshaw - had a huge first half with 13 touches and 8 marks in a manner similar to some of his 2022 backline games. According to some match reports St.Kilda tagged him in the second half and he was far less prominent.
Gawn - very solid all round game, contributing in ruck and as a forward. Looks to be in good marking form and his kicking was solid.
Hunter - was BOG for mine. Yes he had a couple of botched kicks here and there and had some one-twos that padded the stats, but he ran all day and found space. He hit leading forwards and showed a level of intelligence when picking his options. Three score assists from a wing is very good. If he keeps that up he will be an enormous asset.
Oliver - spent plenty of time not in the midfield, was even playing back at times. Seemed to be cruising in second gear but still made it look pretty easy.
Langdon - started hot with 11 touches in the first half but didn’t get too involved in the second half with only four more kicks. Typical Langdon game.
Bowey - impressed with his aerial ability as he judged severa marks well and out positioned his opponent. Kicking was very sound.
Rivers - was splitting time between half back and playing midfield. Got plenty of it, but he was just bombing blindly. Needs to be far more effective with his disposals if he wants to keep getting midfield time.
McDonald - started well with some good leads and marks but didn’t kick straight in the tricky conditions. Had to go back once Lever was off and was hardly sighted, although he didn’t appear to be cut up by his forward either.
Neal-Bullen - I though his disposal was pretty solid. Seemed to be working a bit further back than normal. Solid game.
Sparrow - didn’t do a great deal and missed a couple of scoring shots. Seemed to be playing half forward.
Petty - Saints’ tall forward stocks were dire so hard to judge his game. Got beaten a couple of times in the air, solid with ball in hand. Just a game.
Pickett - dynamic when around the middle of the ground where his pace should be a weapon. Didn’t always make great decisions. If the plan is Petracca and he switch between mid and forward I could see that combination generating 40-45 touches and three goals a game. This game it was 39 touches and five goals. Exciting and very difficult for opponents to combat.
Chandler - wasn’t prolific but took his chances quite well playing half forward.
McVee - seemed very confident and got involved far more than I’ve ever seen him do in the past. Hopefully a bit of a bonus player this year.
Brown - a pretty typical Ben Brown game. Did his thing of leading and marking a couple of times a quarter, but when he’s wasn’t marking on the lead he didn’t contribute a huge amount. Took a couple of ruck contests in the forward line and didn’t look particularly capable.
Yeah van rooyen looks like he's going to be a good player but he's still well off the pace. I actually don't get the hype from media and fans, he isn't even a high profile draft pick, there's a reason he couldn't get a game last late year even though Melksham was terribleGiven I had to watch closely, I’ll add my two cents on how I thought they played too.

I didn't even watch it but I will say it's generally harder to play clean pin point footy at suburban grounds in the pre season. Wind normally a factor and players are rusty. I don't think we will ever have a team that plays champagne footy but we have to atleast move it quick when go. Pickett's goal in the first was an example of our problems, Petracca gets an easy clearance on the wing, charges forward an has a mile of space and then bombs it to the centre of the 50 not to anyone's advantage.Forward line still an overcrowded mess and entries are below standard. The majority of our scores come from hard work and luck even when we dominate , very frustrating, realistically that should have easily been a 15 goal win.
Hard to get a read on JVR. All our tall forwards struggle coz the over crowding and delivery. If you put peak Brown and Carey in that forward line and they'd look like half the player they were for their careers.
I hope he grows it back tho. Its a bit like when Maxy lost his beard.well done to BBB on losing the mop for a good cause.
Typical Oliver, playing Hot Potato again. It was annoying me there were no stats so I thought I’d give it a go. Difficult with dodgy commentary, super wide TV shots and lots of similar haircuts around the half back flank. I only did it for the first four periods.

Look at the space Pickett has but he's running back to where he knows Trac is just gonna blindly bomb itGreat call.
Theres an easy centering kick to I think Langdon who could have had a ping himself or found a lead in an open forwardline

The main culprits are our midfielders: Trac, Viney, and Oliver just slam it on the boot as hard as they can. Kozzy had one in the second quarter after an amazing gather and bounce where he tried to center it to Spargo but it was just way too ambitious a kick and he turned it over, I appreciated the effort though.Perfect example, this should be the easiest of goals, with Pickett turning back kick into to the corridor at the teammate running free, easy JTG over the top if he doesnt kick it himself. We forever make life harder on ourselves. So frustrating.
You all so harsh on the teamThe main culprits are our midfielders: Trac, Viney, and Oliver just slam it on the boot as hard as they can. Our best entries usually came off good transitions when the forwardline was open so if our ball-movement improves we will get more goals out of that. But as it's been pointed out plenty of times, our crap ball movement last year was the result of how the opposition defended against us. So we will find out whether we have an answer for that. Otherwise it was basically just Spargo and Hunter both made smarter entries into crowded forward lines.
Love your work. You all so harsh on the team
