Game Day Preseason Game 2 vs Port

Everyone just glossing over the fact that Darcy went off at half time, when you combine that with no Jackson or Amiss, our tall options down the line were non existent.
Not concerned at all. Port look like a top two team on paper, they've recruited excellently and filled gaps with their new rucks, Zerk Thatcher, and Ratagolea.
We had a WAFL grade forward line against an AFL backline and it showed.
Perspective.

Fellas I couldn't watch the game, could I get a basic summary of our highlights and lowlights? Why is no one mentioning Young's 26 disposal 2.3 goal performance?

Hungry Food GIF
My summary is watch the first quarter if you can
Then go and do something more productive with your life for the next 3 because we were putrid

Good to get a gauge on where we are and where we need to be. Better now then round 1.

Haven't been able watch the game, but seems noones port any credit. I think port will finish top 4 this season and I think outside of Collingwood one of the teams we struggle against. Fast and skillful.

What did you think of our kickout strategy from the goal square?

Sturt still looks well short of a gallop. He can start at Peel to find some fitness and form. It's not like we're an offensive juggernaut and he won't be able to get a look in.
I’m a big Sturt fan but gosh he was rubbish last night. So I agree there - needs to break the door down at peel for a week or two.
Not going to write him off based on a scrimmage match either. But **** me, some urgency from him would be nice. He’s playing for his career in 2024.
Treacy is not much different.
Should Brodie or Erasmus get a game ahead of Johnson? Up for debate after last night too

He'll be fine, just needs to warm up first. Emmett will come back in so this will likely be the case anyway.

I'm not using any of that as justification for dropping blokes. I think a body of work over preseason is more influential than a practice match.

Brodie is going to get games because Fyfe won't play 23.

Good points
Port were good and have a very tough well balanced team

It’s the same old bombing it into the forward line and then bombing it up the wing that’s frustrating most of us

Funny thing is in the first quarter we didn’t do that and controlled the ball well .
The forward line turnovers killed us though , all the good work by the mids and backs gone in an instant when Sturt and Treacy couldn’t get their hands to it

Positives - we have a lot of good youth was good to get Fyfe and Johnson in the midfield for some size . Serong gets a bit monstered at centre bounce but is an excellent extractor at stoppages around the ground .

Negatives - we are screwed without Sonny’s goal kicking if he goes down

And yes Kayo has replays 👍

I thought Johnson was ok ?

The review not going to look great for Sturt, everything he did was wrong. Personally I don’t see it with him, he looks very timid & there were a couple of contests last night he’d like to have back again.

Pearce was enormous & I hope he continues on in that vain & shuts a few up. Serong & Brayshaw just need to concentrate on growing their game further for a year or 2 more without the pressures of captaincy.

It was interesting Darcy not rucking beyond the first quarter. I reckon they didn't really want to play this game, but of course had to.

Sneaky excited about Young too. Not sure why the defender is the only midfielder we have that seems to know where the sticks are but I'll take it (harsh on Andy I know).
At least one of our mids is kicking goals
Bullish on Johnson just quietly

Really like that kids game and I think he’ll thread a few as his confidence builds

Eh

Amiss, Jackson, Freddy and Emmett out - thats about 4-6 goals based on their averages, and 4 of our top 6 forwards. Freddy is important for our transition with his speed and leads, as he showed last wekk

Hard to gauge our transition game kicking to the B team forwards.

Cox's intercepting would probably save a goal or 2.

Im not too worried - yet

I agree Sturt was average, but if we play him we need to be going quickly and letting him lead to space.

He can get free and take a mark, and his kicking if he can get a little room is top notch. His decision making is usually composed and good.

He isn’t a natural pressure forward or a crumber, if that’s how we want any to play he isn’t the right option.

Emmett and Frederick also bring a heap of pressure and tackles, and additionally Frederick provides a heap of run and an option up the field as the ball comes from defence.

I am actually more concerned about neither Switkowski and O'Meara showing up in any capacity because they are two players that will be in and around the forward line come two weeks time.

Don’t worry the leadership group will sort it out.

Took what Port allowed, I guess. Jackson & Cox would've given us more options. There was also a few times you could see the intent, then abhorrent skills from usually competent players ****ed it.

Overall, they seemed more up for the game (disappointing of itself), but not sure we can read too much into it, other than we're going to need to be more physical against high pressure sides.

Understatement. He is miles off it. Not sure why he was played tbh. They really need mins into the likes of Walker and Wagner who I rate much higher as best 24 players. Different position I understand but he still took a up position in the 26 (meaning those two sit just outside the 26 and unable to play). I would have also had Worner behind them with focus on mins for Wagner and Walker.

To be fair to Sturt he had long lay off with the knee but that was crapola. His defender had a field day.

Treacy would want to improve and looked much better running around on ball. Except he decided wild bullet handballs were a thing.

Also whilst on the subject Reidy is miles off it as well. Fumbles and is so slow. I’d have him at the top of the list of delisting. In fact I’d cut Reidy and Tabs if bringing in McDonald and keep Treacy as backup ruck/forward.

It is is sad seeing the rapid regression from Tabs. From what I’ve seen over the couple of games Voss has jumped ahead of him. Voss has a lot to work on but I like his tackling intent. Tabs is starting to remind me of veteran Q Lynch.

Another negative - Serong and Brayshaw (both had dog awful games). I think we will see Brayshaw out on the Wing a fair bit and I think he is learning to role. The two of them made some terrible decisions by hand which is unlike them.

JOM and Aish won’t enjoy watching a replay. Both played well against witches hats last week but last night???

The positives:
Young
Fyfe and Walters - both building. Fyfe still a few weeks off finding better touch.
Pearce played solid game. Also McDonald has slotted in seamlessly.
Some moments from Cooper.

Neutral
Sharp - had some nice moments, especially a couple of times with his positioning on the way out. But goes missing for long periods. He did have illness last week so that may have played a part. He also didn’t go particularly hard at a few contents which concerns me.

Horrible game to watch. Port at times just ran in lines through the corridor with series of handball release pumping the ball i50 without too much pressure.

Hey man, this post all of a sudden made me feel a heap better.

I did the maths and if we had played our B22 and lost, it certainly wouldn't have been by 6-7 goals.

If last night's line up (or even close to it) is selected for Rd 1, then we are in a bit of strife.
