HAWTHORN vs. COLLINGWOOD - Some interesting stats about these clubs is that between 1975 & 1991 with the exception of 1982, every GF contained either Collingwood or Hawthorn, but never Collingwood and Hawthorn; and the 2011 PF was the first time these teams met in any final since 1978. The powerful clubs meeting to fight out for the premiership would be great for the competition, but given that Hawthorn are good at Grand Finals, and Collingwood not so good, it might end badly for the Magpies.
This would be a spicy matchup if it happens with the presence of Jack Ginnivan vs the side he won a flag with and our bogey side as well

No two teams have met more than six times in a Grand Final:

Carlton Vs Collingwood (5-1)
Carlton Vs Essendon (3-3)
Carlton Vs Richmond (2-4)
Collingwood Vs Melbourne (1-5)
Collingwood Vs Geelong (2-4)
Collingwood Vs Richmond (4-2)

Any of these combinations to break the tie would be interesting.
This 10 year-old thread got bumped yesterday, so taking the opportunity to correct this post.

Collingwood and Melbourne have met seven times in Grand Finals, with the Demons winning six (1926, 1939, 1955, 1956, 1960 and 1964) and the Magpies winning once (1958).

The other combinations have met only the six times in Grand Finals.

Carlton and Melbourne had met in 2 finals this century including a memorable semi-final 12 months ago but never met in a grand final
27 of the last 50 GFs have included Hawthorn or Collingwood! But never both.

Swans v Lions is an interesting matchup for neutrals.

1899 was the last time “they” played. Not the same teams now and so long ago that it’s new for all of us.

The more of these new matchups that happen, the better.

I don’t know how many GF matchups have never happened before but just about anything with the Dockers, Giants or Suns would be a novelty.

Though with the Dockers, if they do explode into success next season, a rematch against Hawthorn isn’t far fetched.

Carlton vs Melbourne has never happened and are the only foundation clubs not to have met in a grand final.

Sydney and Geelong met only once, in 2022.
Carlton and Geelong's only grand final meeting was in 1995

A Qclash, Western Derby, Showdown or Battle of the Bridge Grand Finals has never happened yet.

Essendon have met Melbourne in 7 Grand Finals

2000
1959
1957
1948 replay
1948
1946
1941

Some others:

West Coast vs Brisbane. Both non-Vic teams sit on three premierships each (counting the premierships the Lions won as a QLD entity). Would decide which truly was the best.

Brisbane vs Sydney. The AFL would love this one. Would draw substantial interest in Australia's three biggest cities.
Good call on Brisbane vs Sydney

Hawthorn vs Richmond is by far the most extraordinary stat when it comes to finals not just Grand Finals considering the longevity of both teams and the fact both have won 13 flags. 1 finals meeting in history the 2018 QF. When we have been good it's coincided with Richmond being garbage and vice versa. Came very close twice to facing off in Grand finals over the journey. 1974 and 1982 and that's it I believe. Probably why there isn't that rivalry with them like we have with other teams. Not alot of classic history.

1971 and 1975 were other years when they came close to a Grand Final match up.

1994 North vs Eagles
Think the game would be close for most of the day but could see the Eagles would have put there foot down in the last quarter and won by 7 goals in the end.
But maybe in the future both teams will play off in Grand Final.
