Geelong versus Geelong West

Throw out one of those loser teams - and bring in Geelong West

Some of the all time greats have played with Geelong West - im talking Billy Goggin - Peter McKenna - Gary Malarkey

That would be the ultimate - come Grand Final day - i would be clapping both teams goals - a Geelong team would have to win - Fantastic

agree, lock your doors if the tigers win one. It will make pies celebrations in 1990 seem provincial...

Wont help, your daughters will slip out to get a part of that action.

Sydney vs Collingwood would probably attract the most interest around Australia. Especially if Eddie is president.

Wouldn't mind seeing a GF from any combination of Port, Freo, West Coast and Adelaide. The non Victorian but traditional football states would see a massive influx of visitors to Melbourne.

WEST COAST vs. FREMANTLE - Western Derby GF. Enough said.

ADELAIDE vs. PORT ADELAIDE - Showdown GF, as with Western Derby, enough said.

BULLDOGS vs. ST KILDA - The Cinderella teams of the AFL, both stuck on 1 premiership, both many years ago. Looked a reality in 1997, but did not happen, and the Dogs have developed a nasty PF hoodoo that lingers to this day, St Kilda's GF appearances in this time have resulted in letting a winnable game against Geelong slip in the final term, and thrashings from Adelaide and Collingwood.

The two derbies would be great, I hope it occurs one day - not sure which one would be better, the WCE/Freo rivalry was great and tough for a few years but I think the SA clubs have got them now. Either would love to see these two games to see the clubs smack the shit out of each other for bragging rights.

Bullies/Saints would be the other dream match up or Melbourne/Richmond or any combo of those 4 clubs as the Vic clubs with the longest droughts. In fact Richmond v anyone would be insane would be great if it was against a fellow Vic club though.

Yeah, Collingwood b Carlton, 2016. Bookmark it. ;)

Unfortunately, the last time Collingwood defeated Carlton in a Grand Final:

  • Melbourne was Australia's capital, and Canberra a sheep station
  • William Taft was the president of the USA
  • Andrew Fisher was Prime Minister of Australia
  • King Edward VII of England died, and George V became king
  • Adolf Hitler made a living as a painter and decorator, and painted water color landscapes as a hobby
  • Lenin, Trotsky & Stalin worked together as Russian revolutionaries
  • The German Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Russian Empire and Ottoman Empire were major European powers
  • The Titanic was under construction at Harland and Wolf, Belfast
  • Halley's comet was visible from Earth
  • Comedy King won the Melbourne Cup

The year was 1910.

How far back do we have to go for Malthouse coaching a win against Nathan Buckley? ;)

Last two times Carlton and Collingwood meet in Grand Final
1979 Carlton beat Collingwood by 5 points on a very wet MCG afternoon.
Also that year.
  • Ayatollah Khomeini creates the Council of the Islamic Revolution.
  • Philips demonstrates the compact disc publicly for the first time.
  • McDonald's introduces the Happy Meal.
  • Two families flee from East Germany by balloon.
  • Iraqi President Hasan al-Bakr resigns and Vice President Saddam Hussein replaces him.
  • NASA's first orbiting space station Skylab begins its return to Earth, after being in orbit for over 6 years. Skylab's demise was an international media event, with merchandising of T-shirts and hats with bullseyes, wagering on the time and place of re-entry, and nightly news reports. Disintegrates with debris striking portions of Western Australia. The Shire of Esperance facetiously fined NASA A$400 for littering.
  • The first cable sports channel, ESPN, known as the Entertainment Sports Programming Network, is launched.
  • Peter Brock wins the Bathurst 1000 by a record 6 laps, with a lap record on the last lap.
  • Mike Brady and John Farnham part of pre-Grand Final entertainment
  • Soviet Union invades Afghanistan
  • Discos lap up Bee Gees Saturday Night Fever album and also love KC and the Sunshine Band.
  • Michael Jackson's "Off the Wall" album makes it's mark.
  • Rap music starts to get known
  • American movie legend John Wayne dies

1981 Carlton also beat Collingwood. This time over taking them as club in league with most premierships.
Also in 1981..

Absolutely it would be.

Two clubs hated by the rest of their states, the whole "Magpies/Black and White" stuff and Kochie vs Eddie.

I always thought the two sides should have organised a trophy of some kind whenever they played eachother... playing for the "Golden Magpie" or something or other. Perhaps whoever has the GM trophy, gets to wear the stripes until the other side beats them. The other side has to then wear a clash/alternative jumper until then.

Collingwood would have to wear this until the next time they beat Port.

Would certainly spice things up between Ed and Kochie.

When you think about, we have yet to have a completely clean all-non Vic GF.

2004-06 still had Fitzroy/South Melbourne links.

Personally, I've always desired an Adelaide-Collingwood GF. Big clubs, fairly consistent, similar mascots, and already a number of finals encounters.

Collingwood v Fitzroy from back in the day was very appealing back in the day in terms of jumper colours contrast. Black/White v Primary Colours.
Collingwood v Adelaide/Brisbane is the closest we got right now.

A Footscray v St Kilda grand final. Imagine the emotion for the side that lifts the cup. It will give the AFL and the media so much to faf on about. I would easily find it the most interesting non Hawk grand final match up. This is all provided that neither of them win a flag before it happens.

If it's contrasting colours you are after, you can't get any better than a Hawthorn v Purple Haze Freo.
