Don't forget the Illawara Steelers - Pittsburgh Steelers

Brisbane Bullets - Washington (before they got all PC and became the Wizards)

Wonder if the Philadelphia Eagles had a problem with West Coast.

The Townsville Suns changed their name to the Crocs because of very real pressure from the Phoenix.

The claims that the New Orleans Saints (1968) and Carolina Panthers (1995) had a the nerve to challenge older teams is out of this world if true.

How about this one:

from the Swedish side: Landskrona Bulldozers.

Green, Blue, Pink with Orange backs!!!

http://www.safl.se/Site/Team.html#45

Another colour that is very rare in all sports is Light Brown It would look good with Black. (Like the New Zealand cricket team had in the eighties.

(Some quite unique nick-names from the Swedish teams as well: Raptors, Maulers, Red Eyes, Rebels, Dynamites, Dragons, Diggers, Axemen, Berserkers, Ravens).

How about West Sydney Razorbacks?

Prove all that, prove Red Backs are unwanted, seems to be good enough for the SA Cricket side.

Not everyone is scared of spiders.

And as for your Eels comment, I'd like some proof for that as well seeing as the only person who wanted the Tigers emblem was Dennis the menace Fitzgerald, the Eels have been known with that name for half a century, Parramatta in Aboriginal means, "Where eels lie down".

So the name stays, the eels have no problem with sponsorship, and it's a proud Australian name unique around the world for Top flite football.

More Aussie than Bulldogs, Lions, Bombers, Rabbitohs, Roosters, Cats, Panthers, Bears, Titans, Dragons, Tigers, Cowboys, Broncos, Saints, Jets, Victory, Power and most other names Aussie sports teams have.

The only other names that come within a whisker out here for Aussie names are, Australian Kangaroos, North Mel Kangaroos, Western Suburbs Magpies, Collingwood Magpies, Cronulla sharks, Mel Demons, Sydney swans, Manly Sea Eagles, WC Eagles, Adelaide Crows.

When Brisbane used the Bears it was very Australian, as they had a koala as their logo. Why is Mel Demon an Australian logo? Maybe you are thinking of the Tassie Devil? And the Tiger can be Aussie if one thinks of the Tassie Tiger. Hmmm if an Tasmainan Team ever makes it in the AFL.. how about Hobart Thylacines? Then the light brown with black stripes can be used.....

Crows and Eagles were also used in VFA days by Sunshine and Yarraville.
there is no real reason you need a unique moniker, although it does give a point of difference to other teams. If you look at a huge number of country & suburban teams that play Aussie Rules or Rugby League they use nicknames taken from clubs in the big leagues.
I'd actually like to see expansion teams come in without nicknames and allow them to develop organically they way the established teams got theirs.

West Sydney Mortgage Belts
(loosen the belt = flood of goals; tighten the belt = flooded defence).

West Sydney Interest Rate Rises.
(I can hear the chant now, "rate rises" *clapclapclap* "rate rises" *clapclapclap*. if the club has a few bad years they would be "in a recession". if they club was going well, they'd be "in a boom time".)

For seals, I was talking Gold Coast. I agree with you on the Warriors, Wolves, and Red Backs though. Red backs is especially bad because no sponsor would want to be associated with a spider. Sponsors are quite an important consideration. A good example was Parramatta trying to merge with Balmain to get the Tigers logo, because sponsors don't like the Eel.
i disagree, sponsors like popular teams, not logos. any company would be happy to sponsor the west sydney redbacks if they were popular, and i think its a very solid and very australian brand

as for it having red in common with sydney, or having black and red in common with essendon, well it doesent bother the saints when they play either side. thats what the third colour is for, and clash jumpers too.

id have red, black and and predominant blue. if i had any photoshop skills i would mock up a jersey

Gold Coast Sharks (aqua blue and orange)
West Sydney Scorpians (royal blue tree green gold)

Gold Coast Stingrays or West Sydney stingrays (brown and mid blue)

Gold Coast Fire (orange and gold)
West Sydney Wasps (aqua blue and green)

This might sound a bit wanky but how about

West Sydney Pride

The mascot couldn't be a pride of lions (Brisbane Lions) or a pride of peacocks (too soft) however.

I reckon this could work
Using the New South Wales colours of blue and light blue, they would adopt a light blue guernsey similar to the Sturt Football Club in Adelaide.

It's a rip off of the old Woodville logo.

I'm not convinced with warriors. Or that Logo which looks like a transformer.

Perhaps the mascot could be a door that has been "Pried" open... a great team to watch whilst having "ajar" or two

Gold Coast Sharks is i think a certainty. Colours will probably be gold, light blue, and another colour wouldn't mind it being maroon (now that's out there). With the background maroon and one large horizontal stripe incorporating light blue in the middle with a gold lining on the bottom and top. Maybe a picture of a white shark in aswell.
As for West Sydney, not sure. Maybe West Sydney Falcons or Burras or Wolves or Hornets or Wasps or Warriors. Then again we do have quite a few bird mascots and we already have a dog team, and i don't know if an insect would be a good mascot, and warriors (well that gets used alot). Colours hmmm, well what's the opposite colours of the swans? Blue and Black. What kind of design? No idea. Need some help on that. Maybe green and gold. Wouldn't mind that aswell. Lots of suggestions.

Its pretty obvious Gold Coast will look to have an aquatic theme to its nickname, the West Sydney team is more wide open.

West Sydney Rams- early NSW built its economy on the back of the golden fleece

West Sydney Explorers- in respect for Wentworth, Lawson & Blaxland's exploration through the west of sydney/blue mountains

West Sydney Blazers or Trailblazers- same theme as above

Bit more australian animal theme
West Sydney Emus
West Sydney Burras
West Sydney Bats

to name a few
