Pt2: Adrian Dodoro: Football’s Biggest Fraud IMO

Really though?

Many of his 'good moves in isolation' come at the cost of unnessarily tying up salary cap- just so he can been seen to 'win trade week' by signing the likes gresham mackay shiel stringer etc etc.

Most of the guys he brings in- he does so simply by being willing to pay more (in years and dollars) than any other (smart) list manager will.

The guy is an unmitigated fraud- long may he reign.
Still, I'm sure many clubs would have loved some of the moves he pulled off.

Eg in hindsight, if Carlton had gotten Mckay to pair with Weitering instead of spending heaps on Jack Martin and Zac Williams we'd have the best spine in the league (Weitering B. Mckay TDK H. Mckay Curnow). They may have overpaid slightly on salary but on a premium player it's well worth it.

Dodo's/Bombers' 2023 offseason showcased perfectly what he's done for 20 years.

Positives
His hit rate for individual trades and draft picks (including rookies) are slightly above average. Using nothing but cap space on a gun KPD like McKay and finding a quality player like Gresham for nothing are in isolation good moves. Similarly picking up D'Ambrosio and Saad shows the Bombers do well in the MSD.

Negatives
His recent picks also have showcased his failure to see the big picture and make cohesive long term goals. Topping up with senior players whilst you're a below average team will only push you to average or slightly above average. You need to build a stronger core of young talent before spending big on mature players.

Picking up more speedy hbfs also fails to fix the actual needs of the team. Where do those guys fit? Obviously not a good fit since he's had to offload D'Ambrosio to become a gun elsewhere.

Summary
Dodo is pretty good at moves in isolation...but he's completely inept at long term and big picture list strategy.
Adam Saad? Wasn't he a trade from the Gold Coast?

Are those two worth a combined $1.5m a season?

Ben McKay is currently ranked the 18th best key defender on AFL Ranking Points. Sure he's probably better than a few ranked above him (ben Miller, Tomlinson, Tom McDonald), but probably also worse than a few below him (Pearce, May, Sam Taylor, Tom McCartin)

Is that what you're after for $900k?

Hilarious how those in charge at Essendon simply don't give a **** about the club. If they did, Dodo would've been gone years ago and the rest would've collectively fallen on their swords.

You get what you deserve.
You can't go sacking a man who consistently wins Trade Week. Think of the great talent that has landed at Essendon because of the trade master Dodo and how that procured talent has driven Essendon up to, umm, ummm

Further to this as well - he's been in the unique position as a list manager where his job is secure. That's the damning thing for him, he could have taken hard calls knowing that he's not going to be chopped in two years if results go down as a result of bottoming out. He hasn't and the Bombers exist in this weird nether world of not being absolute pants but never being quite good enough to even win a Final.

Gee I thought Gresham was a little overpaid but if McKay is only getting $900k and Gresham is getting the rest of the $15m then that's a big overpay.
Should have been that for Gresham, would have meant our compo would have been the top 5 picks for the next three years. Fair enough.

Haven't visited this thread for a while and it threw me back to late May, early June around the 1050 post mark.
Lots of very smug Essendon supporters especially about Gresham and MacKay. Was enjoyable reading :)

Yeah this 100%.

His decisions could make sense for someone who needs a sugar hit to keep their job. But doing sugar hits for 2 decades is just ridiculous.

The guy's actions demonstrate he has a poor understanding of list strategy and big picture needs.

They got a second Saad in the MSD. Injured early but IMO is the most talented player in the whole MSD.

He looked quite exciting in his last VFL game before the ankle injury, and his family were absolutely stoked when he got picked, hope he gets another season. If only because his brother / cousin / friend whatever he was could be the club hype-man for the whole year.

He understands the coteries and has the one and only club immortal as his mentor and protector !!
No wonder he has the audacity to come out with this kind of stuff after 20 years of crap and counting …

It was cottoned on to that they were no longer a young team very early on this season. That has been well and truly debunked by a few media outlets recently.

I wonder how much longer they continue with the "talented team" moniker? Because I'm seeing less and less AFL level talent every game they play.

Neither description is true anymore.

A valuable lesson for all of us in our careers.

It's better to know where the bodies are buried, and use that as leverage, than actually be competent at your job.

Is there anyone at Essendon with some intelligence to realise that it's the 21st century. Now we have the capacity to bring back cold cases and exhume the bodies and do some forensic science investigation.

Really how much investigative effort would it take to uncover twenty years of mediocrity?
