QAFL 2018

I think the Magpies played Park Ridge in a bit of a scratch match. Depending on who you talk to, it was a flogging as most would expect, or the Pirates really took it up to them. My guess it was probably somewhere in between! Not sure what benefit a QAFL club gets from playing Div 2 sides though, thought not a bad idea if you want a look at a few new blokes against weak opposition?

I would love to see Richmond's VFL team play Southport or Redland. We saw last season what Sydney did week in week out. Sending Southport Redland Aspley down to take on the AFL teams' 2nds would result in 100+ demoralising defeats every week. Cant believe Sydney have stuck witth it.

Dont disagree but its not about the result for recruiters, they dont care.

Sad to here Sandgate couldn’t get enough 18’s this season and won’t be entering a team, especially in a big growing area.
Juniors are the future of the Seniors , as the say.

Not a fan of this. Wonder how many players are at Aspley that qualify for Colts based on their age?

Sandgate are getting buried by that joint, and its not a good look for footy in the north. Even worse is all the Sandgate blokes who went to Aspley (which is fine to step up to NEAFL) instead are going to Aspley Div 1 or Grange QAFL, and not returning to their junior club.

Sad state of affairs, and while Sandgate aren't blameless - its just not a good look for a longstanding powerful club to be suffering like this

Yes. But I was more thinking on the QLD clubs development.... heading down there and getting 100+ floggings is not conducive for development. As no doubt you've seen many a time, one team controls the game and dominates the pill and most positions. If a young guy is that keen to make it, and has been cut from the academy, dont you think it would be better that he head down to VFL or SANFL to get noticed. Not make the QLD teams travel down there every 2nd week.

The mature guys dont want the travel either. They just want a good level in QLD. It works by disbanding NEAFL, and the non AFL teams play QAFL.

I heard Aspley are also struggling for numbers at Colts level.

Maybe they shouldn’t be in the qafl then? If they have no colts is there only going to be one place to play colts on the Northside???

Aspley have been struggling for numbers in the colts, however with the revised age change, we will be fine now. Maybe Sandgate are struggling to field a colts side because they will have to play reserves to field a reserves side?

What happens to all the 16's that come through Aspley Big E?? Surely your colts arent filled up with over agers? I did hear that Aspley were one of the clubs that pushed for the change in age back to 18.5 but didnt believe it.

Very sad for Sandgate who did run a really solid junior program once upon a time and had good Colts. No idea why they have fallen away but would hate to think any clubs are out there "recruiting" colt aged kids unless they are playing seniors for them.

Yep - agree. too much travel in reality. Doesnt help anyones capacity to play decent footy.

Clubs aren’t going to layout a lot of money to get flogged week in week out for however long that would go for. The 3 clubs will go back the qafl. Recruiters will come to watch the games and games are going to be streamed every week this year

They might watch Damo but damn hard to put a line through standard for them so will they take much notice?? I dont know. Was the exact reason for the creation of the NEAFL in the 1st place - to provide a comp that could be a creditable comp for recruiters to pick from.

I would suggest that young fellas with aspirations who do not get drafted at 18 may be better off heading south IF this situation did eventuate.

Not filled with over agers. 4 or 5 at most.

16’s are coming thru. Like most clubs you lose a few to other clubs, the most difficult thing for clubs these days is to keep the kids playing.

BigE

Just out of interest, and having watched the Aspley U16's win the flag last year, have many, if any, of those boys given footy away this year?

There was a lot of talent in that team, it'd be sad to see boys who are genuinely good players drift away from the game although Year 12 commitments can often have a big impact on Colts numbers.

BigE although Year 12 commitments can often have a big impact on Colts numbers.

You have to wonder about this. You often hear kids parents telling them not to play footy to focus on Year 12.

What happened to having a balanced lifestyle? Footy is the ultimate pressure release, whether you are doing Year 12 or even a 25 year old in a high pressure career.

It's madness to give it away 'to focus on year 12'. If you're at a good club, which lets be honest, a majority are good clubs with good environments despite our allegiances - then playing Colts football is great for learning more about leadership, teamwork etc.

I agree with you about the benefits of having some balance and outlets during Year 12, but it also depends on individual circumstances.

Some boys engage in multiple sports at a high level such that something has to give way during Year 12, and quite often that will be footy if they're not in a rep program or playing QAFL seniors - for them "there's always next year".

if an opportunity arises for these kids I believe they should always go. Even if it’s in just the suburban leagues not just the vfl.

absolutely astonished a majority of clubs voted for that outcome, rather than opting to ensure their colts play 16 games in an uneven draw.

(clearly our preferred option was to play 16 games, which is what was offered as an option to all clubs)
