As someone who used to train cricket umpires I look at AFL umpiring somewhat differently, but one thing that stood out to me last night was the poor bouncing and the variable depth of the thrown ins.

Far too many ruck free kicks are caused by these errant thrown ins and bounces. I regard errors of judgement by umpires in our chaotic game as inevitable but the thrown ins are ridiculously inconsistent.

I saw one thrown in, that in a VAFA game, the central umpire would have asked the boundary umpire to do it again,

Probably more a general comment than game specific, but isn't it exciting to see the young group pushing through this year? To have three teenagers entrenched in our 22 (Ashcroft, Fletcher and Wilmot) is fantastic for such an established side. With our haul of f/s and academy talent coming to freshen us up in the 2024 draft as well, it's pretty exciting. Last time we were getting excited about the youth on our list we were at the bottom of the ladder!

Inject it straight into my veins.

Hearing the crowd sing country road is so reminiscent of English soccer fans, sends a shiver up the spine, adds so bloody much to the atmosphere, absolutely love it.

Forgoing my customary morning Yoga class today to sit back and enjoy the replay.🧘‍♂️:brisbane:

The umpiring was inconsistent at best, outright bizarre at times. Four umpires means that at various stages, the same incident could be judged in four different ways. At one point there were clearly two umpires who disagreed with each other. A few times players from both sides looked from one umpire to another trying to work out what the hell was going on.

Late in the game, it seemed even two of the umpires struggled to work out where and to whom a free kick should be paid. The players scratched their heads and the ball headed one way to a player then back to another player.

If the umpires were a team in this competition, they would be in the bottom three this season based on performance. Probably their worst season in this decade by some margin.

Big shout out to those at the Gabba last night.

The whole 'extra player's cliche gets tired but when port closed the gap in the third, they got up and about and I actually felt that we were safe because that crowd would not let us lose. From that point of view I think the poor umpiring did us some favours.

It would appear from the thread on the main forum you’re not the only one who has taken a special interest in him.

He is an absolute spud, he’s not biased to/against anyone, he’s just a terrible umpire.

If you watch the game again (or any game with him in it), unlike other umpires he seems to actively be looking for infractions at contests instead of paying what he sees; which means half the time he pays what isn’t there because he THINKS it was there.

1- 102 point turnaround from round 1.
2- We have the best trio of teenagers in the competition > Wilmot, Fletcher, Ashcroft.:hearts:
3- Joe gave Aliir Aliir a bath.
4- The even spread of contributors was fantastic to see, makes us very hard to stop.

Learnt that there are padded seats in the stadium tonight. What a nesty experience

They were initially replacing them section by section, but fairly soon after they started the plans to rebuild the Gabba started coming about so they gave up lol

David King said a few months ago that he thinks Fletcher will end up better than Ashcroft.

Way too early to comment on that, but * he definitely was big on him early, for good reason
I recall an interview with his dad(IIRC in the pre season) and he said something like Jaspa is a real competitor, knows where to be and is very good in a contest... pretty spot on assessment of his boy.

Good morning everyone, what a beautiful morning.......(even though it's cold, overcast and expecting showers.)

Getting ready to watch the replay at 8.15am Foxtel. I never watch replays but that game last night was so good I want to see it again..

...and as has been said, the crowd were phenomenal. I love the chant but the sound of everyone singing away loud and clear was something else altogether...well done to each and every one of you at the game. Was truly amazing

4- The even spread of contributors was fantastic to see, makes us very hard to stop.

...or for the opposition to know who is going to kick the next goal. It could come from any one of our players which makes it very hard to cover them all..

We are truly blessed. We finally have a team to take us all the way.

We have to mention it - that poor girl who sang the national anthem and forgot the words.

Watched her walk off - she seemed ok but she must have been dying inside.

Probably the last time she'll get that opportunity. Justifiably.
Why? Rayner has been fluffing his lines for six years but he was given an opportunity after opportunity to get it right and BANG, look what happens when he finally managed to get in sinc.:)

People, where is the love for the Big O? He was brilliant last night.
I agree, I gave him a vote. He battled hard early but the longer the game went the better he got. When he starts grabbing the ball in the ruck you know he's on top. A big reason we kicked away in the game. I love me some Big O, he's that humble, bashful big country lad you'd want as a best mate.

What was brilliant watching on TV, and wished I was there in person, "the atmosphere" created by our supporters. Non of this manufactured "Never Tear Us Appart" bull shit over there atPort Power.

It was like watching football at Anfield or Camp Nou It was brilliant.

great show by everyone last night. starcevich looked more like his old self, joe was more brilliant than terrible, Ah Chee played another great game, Glugga...brilliant.

Improvements
Joe needs to compete in the ruck.
Payne is still too passive.
Big O still playing from behind at throw ins.
Improvements needed - your posting.

Who is keen to hear what theme Kenny goes with for the semi final?
