And that is how you win a close game - leaders stand up in key moments.

We are the opposite of the Hawks in tight games. They win 3 out of every 4 close games and we do the opposite.

That and the psychological hold they have over teams that really should be beating them anyway.

Even when we were winning the most games of any side (01-07) the only club we owned by all possible measures was Essendon.

There's no way all those scrubby Collingwood, Carlton, North and Melbourne sides would be rattling this Hawthorn side under similar circumstances.

Hawthorn this year remind me of Geelong circa 2013/2014. Just a good average team but chalk up half a dozen or so wins simply because their opponents are too scared to beat them due to years of psychological torment.

Finally had the chance to listen to the Macca / Portia review podcast of this game, redpaths first 2 goals were on austin not Stewart, the third, whether it was a mix up or whatever he lead pittard to the ball. He was always going outbody Stewart in the goal square like that in the last.

I did enjoy redpath giving us a very loud fk you campaigners after his first... I guess he backed it up...

All the bulldogs supporters taking pity on us is making me want to throw up.

I appreciate the good will, but gee.

We have a connection our club's, we are both clubs that were broke, more so bullies i think and they have become the NEW darlings of the AFL just we were in 2013 and 2014. I can remember we would be taking pity on them.

When was the last time you got this from the clowns across the road.... I respect that stuff cause i do the same, i would jump on their board on congratulate them on the win. Cudo's to those who made the effort I say.

There up and about the Bullies, and so they should be. We were at one stage.

Just wanted to pop in if welcome and just give some thoughts on the game and reading through some of the pages on this thread.

I'm really surprised at the defeatism theme running through this thread.

As much as I don't want to seem boasting about our team or our win... you were really unlucky with that game.

You bring that effort and intensity and my tip is you'll win more games than you lose, even to top 8 opponents.

For example we've thrashed teams this year in contested possessions, I'm pretty sure our average differential was above +20 until this game, and then you were the only team to actually break-even with us in that area, showing your hunger and intensity that you brought to the contest.

Even the game was extremely high quality - the quality of pressure and tackling and intensity, but then the skills from both teams in spite of that intensity from both teams was extremely high. You watch some games like Melbourne v Collingwood yesterday and even though the skills were similar, the intangibles of pressure, intensity and "heat" in the game was nowhere near the level of our game.

Which is where I don't get the defeatism. Some of you blokes ruling out finals and looking to trade players etc. after this game. Sure you dropped one that you could have won... but bring that quality and that intensity to the rest of the season and there's not a doubt in my mind that you'll be playing finals.

The key thing here for you guys is 13 wins. If you can get yourself to 13 wins for the rest of the year I reckon you'll play finals. West Coast are suddenly looking vulnerable, and as silly as it sounds, given North's ridiculously hard draw they're not guarantee to win more than about 13 games either. Get yourself equal with either of them and hope your percentage does the rest.

Good luck for the rest of the year.

Thanks Mate!!

Yeah really like your post good points.

The annoyance from supporters I think stems from 2013to where we are now and the same themes run through us mentally from well since chocco took over.

to have that dominance in the 2nd for the result we got back is so frustrating but nothing new.

Honestly, it really ****s me off that I can't find it in myself to dislike the Bulldogs. Even after the Minson incident with Cornes. They're a young side with a bunch of hungry players who love the contested ball, their coach is a bit of a campaigner but he gets results and they aren't one of the rich powerhouse clubs of the AFL who have success handed to them on a platter. They also are a historically working class suburb which I always have a soft spot for.

Even after a game so close I was surprisingly ok with losing. All I could think was 'What a game!' and kept forgetting that we lost. I think I'm actually beginning to hate them because I can't find reasons to hate them.

I just watched the replay.

Boak and Gray are our prime mids at 28 wines next at 21? We have a black hole in the middle with age in the midfield. Hartlett and Broady need to step the hell up!

We play dumb and don't know how to work around the forward zone teams apply. Bombing it to Dicko 40 out is poo.

We don't seem to know how to execute our zone properly on the flip side.
Midfield is shit. Full stop
