Ins and outs?

No injuries listed in the match report for the Dees game; Patton was subbed out for Luke Power in the 3rd quarter - likely related to general match fitness and lack of impact/where the game was at by that point.

Chad rested from the Demons game should be a certain in.

Having missed 4 games (plus the bye in the middle) Folau should be coming off the injury list after dealing with a hamstring/back complaint. John Quinn noted that he may not come straight back into the AFL side, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him playing at least a game or two with UWS considering he's been out for five weeks.

Tomlinson, Hoskin-Elliot and Hampton were among the best for UWS on the weekend, likewise Steve Clifton in his 3rd game for the season after 6 weeks off with a knee injury. Each of those first three could be in the discussion this week, while Clifton might find himself running out for his AFL debut if he can string a few more reserves games together.

Whiley and Wilson (despite a couple of goals) could be a pair to drop down, Bugg had a down day against the Dees but will bounce back.

any chance that miles will be available? hows he been training etc? anyone knows?
Miles is out for at least another week with a knee injury and will be in the reserves upon his return. I liked his game against Adelaide earlier in the season, but if he's up for selection I don't think it'd be for at least a couple of weeks after he comes back for UWS. By that time Coniglio for one will be back, and Miles will be amongst others pushing for a gig from the reserves.

Chad was just rested from the Demons game right? There's no concern with him coming back for this game?
Yep, should be good to go.

(completely forgot about him when pondering ins and outs in the OP haha despite his absence from the backline being somewhat glaring on the weekend)

You'll guys will need him, could possibly match up on Goodes in your back line. Assuming we go in with the same forward line as last week

Hombsch-LRT
Cornes-Goodes
Darley-McGlynn
Edwards-Jetta?

Anyone playing well for the UWS Giants that may make their debut against the Swans?

It will be good to see Patton and Cameron continuing to play together.. Hope that Patton will stay on for all 4 quarters against the Swans, too.

In Round 8, following a wonderful Saturday afternoon in Canberra, we travelled to Brisbane, full of light, hope and optimism, to face off against a Lions team down on form and confidence. It was a game we dared to consider winnable as Brisbane were very much anchored in our postcode on the AFL ladder.

We got smashed. It was, as Rhys Palmer bitterly described it to me that evening at Brisbane airport, "somewhat underwhelming".

The pride of our incredibly young group was bruised. Pundits wrote as off: we were "over rated", "appalling", "a joke".

So our amazing young group dug deep and produced wonderful performances in the weeks that followed, against Essendon, Geelong (in Geelong, in Geelong weather) and Richmond (in weather Noah would have put his sailor's hat on in immediately). There were times in all three games against these teams with legitimate finals - if not title - aspirations, when we dared to dream the unthinkable.

The cold hard reality is that pitched against these competition heavy weights, our essentially Under 20 team did not take a backward step, did not flinch at the weight of the reputations charging at them, were not intimidated by larger, more developed bodies attempting to bully them. Our kids stood toe to toe and dished back everything chucked at them.

Then we went down to Melbourne, and got trampelled by another team with aspirations only of ending up above us on the premiership ladder. A club of tremendous history and heritage, but with nothing to offer its sneering privileged fans in the way of a viable future. A club that will remain mired in our current postcode of the ladder when we are soaring well above it in a few short years.

I wasn't at the airport to witness their resolve this time around, but I would confidently wager that Brekkie Point would be abuzz this week with resolute young men determined not to repeat that sort of performance any time soon. That quietly, internally, talented young men with dreams of the ultimate glory will feel the fire and fury of frustration coursing through their veins and will close ranks and basically bull charge the next challenges facing them. Sydney.

I believe that we will beat the Swans.

That unquenchable fire of desire, of talent, of raw ambition, and of the undeniable pride that was so brilliantly stoked up by that horrible Sunday afternoon in Brisneyland will rise like a phoenix from the ashes of an equally awful Sunday afternoon at the MCG, and the full wrath of strong, proud young men will rear up before the doubters and disbelievers and vent its rage and its passion. I love and respect the Swans, but this is not the perfect situation for them to face us.

I believe.

GO GIANTS!

Cornes-Goodes

Edwards-Jetta?
Those matchups seem about right, Edwards picked up some touches against Melbourne but we'll see if he can keep up with Jetta. I could see Bugg possibly spending some time with Jetta depending on how the midfield matchups work out. From memory Cornes spent a bit of time on Goodes in round 1?

With 12 injuries and only 12 playing with UWS it's hard to know. These are the 12 who played last week, best in italics: Clifton, Frost, Bruce, Kennedy, Buntine, Phillips, Golds, Hoskin-Elliot, Downie, Ugle, Tomlinson, Hampton

Bruce, Kennedy, Buntine, Hoskin-Elliot, Tomlinson and Hampton could get a look in at the one or two spots that might be available this week, however a number of those guys are coming off recent injuries. Clifton would probably be the front-runner for next debut and he's only played 3 NEAFL games through injury (with 5-6 weeks in between them).

Patton admitted this week that he's well under-done and struggled on the MCG. He also said that he might not reach full match fitness until next year after he gets a pre-season under his belt, but as you said hopefully he'll be able to run out more games as his season progresses...

GO GIANTS!
If you respected the Swans you wouldn't be predicting a win, I admire you passion though.

If I feared the Swans, I wouldn't be predicting a win.

But respecting them is entirely different. Nothing would please me more than the Swans winning the whole shebang this year, as it would be absolutely outstanding for football in New South Wales. Respect is all about acknowledging their many fine players, sound administration and excellent coaches. Respect is all about applauding their gritty determination to establish themselves here over the past 30 years in a city which wasn't exactly welcoming for a very large part of it.

Fear would be thinking that this game is already run and won, and that there's no point in anybody turning up in orange and charcoal. Far from it, imo. I do not fear them at all, even if they outscore us in any given game.

So, yes, I do respect the Sydney Swans.

I just don't want them to win this Saturday. ;)

GO GIANTS!

No Folau for this one; Sheedy on his impending fitness test on the hamstring/back: "He'll pass it and he'll play in the NEAFL."

Good/obvious call after missing four weeks with that kind of injury, Sheeds said he should be back against Hawthorn or Adelaide.

Taylor Adams will miss this one - the club has just announced that he has been suspended for one game (plus another game as a suspended sentence applicable until the end of 2013) for his role in an incident outside a nightclub in Geelong in January.

The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS have announced sanctions against player Taylor Adams for his part in an incident outside a nightclub in Geelong in January.

Adams has been suspended for two AFL matches - one of which will be a suspended sentence - and fined the maximum five per cent of his base playing wage which equates to $3,477.

He will also undertake 10 weeks of community service in Western Sydney to develop a greater awareness of the impact of violence in the community. This program will be developed by Father Ed Dooley at the Holy Family parish at Mt Druitt.

Adams will also participate in an appropriate education course as recommended by the AFL or AFLPA. This will be approved and overseen by the AFL’s Cultural Strategy and Education Manager Sue Clark.

Adams, 18, was placed on a diversion program by the Geelong Magistrates Court this week after he accepted responsibility for recklessly causing injury and being part of an affray. No conviction was recorded and two assault charges were dropped.

I have been loving what Taylor Adams has been doing but I'm also happy at the suspension. Could possibly have even been more. Gotta set the tone early.

I've also had quite a bit to do with Holy Family Mt Druitt (mainly on reconciliation issues) and they do some really good work. I like that part of his "punishment".

He's been great on the field, perhaps a touch aggressive at times (ask Harley Bennell, Leroy Jetta and Nathan Jones) but has been one of the solid draftees after missing some of the pre-season/debuting late with a back injury. That it was downgraded from two charges of assault to affray and recklessly causing injury shows that it mightn't have been as bad as first thought when it occured.

I like the additional measures by the club, get him on the right track early and as you say it sets the tone too.

In: Cornes, Hampton, Tomlinson, Kennedy
Out: Adams, Hombsch, Whiley, Darley

That's OK.
Shame Hombsch's out, but those 4 ins should do quite well. Cornes is going to be great to have in there against the Swans with his strength and experience. Hampton will bee keen to put in a good performance (we all know he's capable) and prove he deserves to stay in the seniors, and Tomlinson and Kennedy are certainly handy players as well.

and S2F, you are right - definately a good call on Folau.. He has never really been match fit, and in fairness neither is Patton. The last thing we need is two blokes in who are under-done and don't have the fitness base required. We can get away with it to some extent with one player, as we're going to have to sub one player off during the game anyway, and we need to get as many games at AFL level into these kids.
It'd be great to see Folau in the team too, but not until his body is right and he's built up a bit of confidence by doing pretty well in the NEAFL.

Surprised to see Darley omitted. He has been pretty solid down back. Killed Davey last week and racked up 19 possessions of his own with a very good DE. Is this a normal rotation of youngsters? Or has he been dropped on form?

Shame about Hombsch, still not convinced about Tomlinson but glad Hampton is back, although he could go either way. Let's hope the good one turns up.
