What did happen with Boak tonight?

Just another B grade midfielder game?

Lobbe was good, was buggered though needs support Brogan in for the Showdown?

Matt Thomas, Danyle Pearce, Steven Salopek, all played games that reminded me of them showingme how much potential they have sadly those games are 4 years old now and i think thats around the best performance we'll get from these blokes (mabes Pearce could lift another notch?)

Far out Jacobs kicking was good tonight

Think hartlett is being under rated here, had a few costly errors but played at least equal to Sal's game

Banner's lack of leg speed tonight was alarming. Fail to see a future for him as an AFL midfielder for that reason but he certainly knows where the goals are, small crumbing forward may be an option but then again you want those blokes to be able to chase and apply pressure, going by tonights effort that appears beyond him also.

Swap his role with Gray's problem solved.

boak , gray, hartlett, pearce, cassisi,

there is some talent there but its just not enough. the good thing is that barring cassisi they are all young and given 11 and 12 drafts with high picks and good drafting we could easily add 2-3 very good mids + jacobs moore pittard and newton. gray has been getting better, harts is class, pearce will run and pump it, boak can smash that ball forward. when we add a couple more good mids to that group we wont get smashed any more.

I would have paid `Still wishing we had Darling'

banner slow. he got beat by their 6gamer

why are their 6gamers afl ready and we always say oh he needs afl fitness
we make so mny excuses i want to throw up

pathetic.

The reason they got their 2 run ons last night was the time and space we afforded them running through the wings and corridor. It's like our half backs and mids all push up too far because they stick with their opposing player who has zoned back when we have possession in our forward half. I think this is the reason we allow counter attacking sides to kick so many easy goals against us... and why so many spuds tear us apart. Give any AFL player that much time and space and they'll kill you.

Theres no lack of fitness on Banners part. Hes been tearing up the SANFL for months now. His problem will always be lack of pace. Hes never been quick. I think hes got some obvious talent but whether his deficiencies will keep him as a top end SANFL player only im not sure.

I'd like to see him playing in the centre for a couple of games before making up my mind on him as thats where he is more suited.

Banner's like so many of our players who play to a certain level but will not push themselves beyond it. Banner isn't quick but he showed when he put in the big ones once or twice on the chase he could get involved.

Against St Kilda last week he noticeably gave up the chase more than once while Saints players just ran their guts out. But he's no orphan in this current Port side.

This isn't about fitness or skills it's about pushing yourself to be the absolute best you can be. We have too many players happily living in a comfort zone. This is one of Primus's greatest challenges, to get them out of that mindset.

It would be nice to have a key forward, but Darling whilst in my opinion has played some very good games, has slowed down a lot. I'm thinking he's similar to Daniel Rich who came into the AFL after playing a couple of years of WAFL looked way more at home than other draftees then is swallowed up by the pack in the next couple of years. The only time I'll wish we had taken him is if Butcher doesn't develop. Speaking of which, get him in the side. It's time to find out whether he can make it.

The Chaplin hate is a joke

You're thinking when he retires there'll be enough time for a "best of" DVD?

Reckon anything will make it from last night? Or maybe it will be played at Brownlow Medal night?

I can see that.

To the sound of the Benny Hill music

I didn't watch all of the game last night, but saw a good whack of the second half.

I noted your rating for Hartlett, so understand he may have had a average night, but I saw some skill and poise type things in the last that confirmed to me that he will be our #1 midfielder as soon as next season - and will be genuine elite (injury aside)

Lobbe looks like he will make it and be the type of ruck that suits the state of the game - I love his second third efforts

I genuinely believe we are currently tactically inept and implementing tactics not suiting our current skill level. How often do we see us all press forward only to turnover a simple kick and see our opposition get over the back of us. This is affecting our confidence and it spirals from their.

In two years time primus will either be regarded as a courageous coach who made the tough calls and set us up, or he won't be here.

I just want to ask everyone here if they noticed a passage of play that went handball backwards, handball sideways etc etc. until the ball landed in kane cornes' hands who then kicked it forward and hit schulz's hands who dropped the mark or was spoiled.

I mean, if I were to say I couldn't believe my eyes I would be lying but I'm sure there are many here who wouldn't believe such a thing would ever happen.

I didn't see much of the first or any of the 3rd quarter, but he had a very good first half.

Probably not relevant but guh I just don't want to have to read another "KANE CORNES ALWAYS KILLS OUR MOMENTUM" post today.

From what else I say Salter was better than he has been (though may have faded later) Cassisi looked a little slow, and Banner and Hitchcock were brilliant. Chad Cornes was also very impressive while Schulz did nothing.

There are a few examples of coaches coming in and taking a couple of years to get things moving their way - Harvey at Freo, Lyon at St. Kilda.

Our problems are massively compounded by the tightest football budget in league. For Primus to achieve anything (if he's actually capable) there needs to be a significant boost in support staff.

If Kane is running forward, he tends to kick it forward. When he's playing like this, he's valuable to us and I imagine this is exactly what Primus wants to see from him. I even saw Kane instructing one of the younger players to kick it forward in the 4th quarter! Kane would have to be the poster child for bad habits, made all the more worse by his continued personal success (club champions) with them. He would be one of the hardest players to 'de-program'.

fwiw
IMO tactically I am not sure we did anything wrong.
We got done by player errors and lack of chase not by tactical errors.
We came back at them again and again only for costly turnovers and lack of chase to kill us yet again.

There also was a massive momentum shift when Ebert took a legitimate mark on the boundary that got them a run on when they could have been on the back foot, but IMO Primus and the team did well last night.

I listened to the 5AA coverage of the game. At the beginning of the first quarter Carr and Ginever mentioned 3 or 4 key incorrect match ups in our defense. Well lo & behold when the second quarter started these changes had been made. Surely our coaches new what Melbourne’s forward line was going to be before the match!

It was also disappointing to here that 4 out their first 8 goals were from our turnovers and again you here the same remarks from the commentators that Melbourne chased harder and seemed to have more players on the field.

Swap his role with Gray's problem solved.

I've noticed that when he actually kicks the ball over distance, rather than chip it, his accuracy is very good. As his confidence continues to develop, I expect to see his kick get better and better.

I reckon he's had a case of the "yips". Added pressure and speed of the game has caused him to hold back on his kick and therefore not get momentum through the ball, resulting in missed targets.

I look forward to seeng him playing in the midfield next year after a full, un-interrupted pre-season.

Where are the Jacobs haters now?

Having drinks with the O'Shea haters

They're all with the Lobbe and Hartlett haters. Just wait, one bad game and they'll be back with their bag of spiteful insults fully re-charged continuing to remind us of the failed draft picks these guys are.

I didn't watch the last quarter last night. I was too angry and frustrated because when we got to within 14 points in the 3rd I was excited thinking that the preparation we had for playing the conditions would mean that we will run over them.

Individual errors and turnovers. That's what cost us last night. Some of our decision making under pressure is school boy stuff. Just plain dumb footy. Thank god for the bye

So wait, why did Salter play forward for the first min or two?

Were we planning on playing him there all day and then realized we needed another tall in defence and put him down back?

He wasnt up forward at all.

At one point he was in the middle for a couple of bits of play.

Probably following his natural instincts to go forwards. Bet he got warned to go back by the runner :(
