ROUND 4: ESSENDON VS FREMANTLE
Windy Hill, Essendon
Sunday September 24 @ 3.05pm AEST
Essendon will be looking to bounce back against Fremantle on Sunday, after recording their first loss for the season against a dominant Adelaide side at Unley Oval.
The Bombers had started in sprightly fashion, particularly in the clearances, and held a slender four-point lead when Essendon forward Daria Bannister suffered a concussion, hitting her head on the turf as she tackled an opponent.
Maddy Prespakis played a near-lone hand in Essendon's midfield, while ruck Steph Wales proved her wares at ground level, recording six clearances, but Adelaide counterpart Jess Allan held sway in the aerial battle, with Hatchard and Marinoff lifting their workrate through the midfield.
Adelaide sprang to life in the second quarter, with Teah Charlton proving a handful and Danielle Ponter's 50th career goal coming before half time, despite Essendon swinging spearhead Bonnie Toogood into defence.
Adelaide started the second half with a 17-point lead, but the Bombers took back some control in the clearances, slowing Adelaide's roll until Abbie Ballard broke through with two set shot goals in the space of a few minutes.
The Bombers refused to die wondering. They rallied, kicking two goals in the final term, but it wasn't enough. The Crows proved their class, kicking clear again in the final minutes to record a 47 point win.
And so, in typical Essendon fashion, Bonnie and Woosh marked their milestones with a loss... though admittedly against three-time premiers at their home ground.
