AFL Toast Win against Wet Toast

You're stretching. We're a developing side who aren't at the stage where we should be talking "what margin?", we are not there yet.

30 points is better than a nailbiter or typically dropping it as we usually would (yes, past Essendon would drop expected wins let alone talking about smashings). We are not the type of club to be scoffing at 5-goal comfortable wins.

Collingwood comes off a flag and finds themselves 50 points down against Norf, having to come back and win it by a point, and everyone praises them because of "pulling their pants up" at the crucial time of the match. If they were neck-on-neck the entire match and found themselves 1 point ahead at the final siren people would be calling them pretenders, yet even that would be a stretch in the context of the season and how tight it is.

Anyone can perform on their day, but sides on the right track find a way to not only outlast them in terms of all quarters, but to also get the job done. That seems to be something a lot of people forget. There's lowly sides having their day, and then there's actually getting the W out of them rather than dropping them. So far, we haven't dropped many against the teams we were predicted before the season to finish below than, which is a positive in itself considering the stage of where we're at.

Think you need to temper your expectations for this team and be a little more realistic.
this win is nothing different to what we haven't seen for the best part of two decades. I don't sit here and go "yeah!",

I don't think there's anything to be gained from potentially beating up on an injury ravaged side. All it does is boost our ladder position and feed into unrealistic assessments of our side
we are beating bottom sides that is feeding uno unrealistic expectations from everyone else

This has felt like a typical Essendon win like we have seen for the best part of two decades. Wins against lowly ranked sides when, if we want to be taken seriously, should be smacking them.

Lets be honest for a second, this West Coast side bar a few older stars are a shit show. Yeo, Barass, McGovern, Darling are closer to the end than the start. Allen is a star but that is it imho.

We killed it ourselves. Played down to there level and that is what bemuses me the most. We will come out and take it up to Geelong or get smacked like we do every other time we play Catters.

urn up and lose by a couple of goals to the Cats and these wins will be put in the archives, turn up and lose by 10 goals and these wins get highlighted as "typical Essendon"

The expectation we should be belting bottom teams should have dissipated when we barely beat west coast the first time around, then north, and then Richmond. We are not good enough to be doing that yet. Writing has been on the wall for 6 weeks now.

We are a developing team, we have holes in key parts of our list.

Good teams or sportsmen dont necessarily smash everyone all the time. From memory when WCE won in 2006 they had a lot of smallish wins - we seem to be doing similar just not necessarily on the biggest stage. Federer gave a speech recently where he said he won 80% of the time but only 54% of points in all matches played.

We didn't handle the big moments well the past couple of matches, that is something that may bring us unstuck this year. Also how do we handle the expectation and second part of the year where we are notorious for capitulating. Will be interesting how we handle the occasion of the Pies in front of 90k+.

I don’t get carried away by being in 3rd. Even with all other teams baring #### Sydney and ####### #### #### ##### Carlton proving to be pretty average.

But it was only one and a half seasons ago we lost these games and sat around the bottom of the table.

Singing the song Is always great. Singing it 9 out of 14 is gold. Going to enjoy it.

I’m thinking (insert burning smell joke):

Red circles - top 4

Green arrows fighting for 5 to 8.
  • Think we can hold on for 5th or 6th
  • None of them looking much more convincing than us
  • A home final against any of the inconsistent monkeys doesn’t create any panic

A win is a win. I'll take it.
On a side note, Reddog have anything to worry about for his tackle?
Don't think so as it was one action and his arms were not pinged. His head didn't hit with much impact and he played out the game.

Lucky he didn't drive his head down to draw a free (common now, but stupid as you risk concussion future CTE)

Having said that, didn't think Weed had much to answer for either.

Defence was a bit off but overall I thought it was a pretty decent performance coming off the bye.
The way we play pretty much invites teams to challenge us every week. That's not a bad thing. It's playing honest, and right now it looks a bit like just scratching wins over the line but it's a style built on physicality, effort, commitment to the contest that will eventually hold up in finals. Shows where we're at that we can end a close contest like that as a 30 point win imo.
Also Laverde is immense. He makes up for his brain fades by always going no matter what. Probably his best season.
Optimistic for the rest of the year. Next month is huge.

Essendons focus is contest and team defence, that style doesnt lead to free flowing high scoring games unless our defence and contest is through the roof and our forwards kick straight. In this game the team defence was good despite defenders giving away at least 5 goals from bad turnovers and I think we got beaten at the contest. Our forwards kicked straight though which is nice to see compared to the last few games.

I think your underrating yeo barrass and McGovern who are all still all Australia quality players.

This was a danger game after a bye where we played plenty coming off injury break too. I’m happy with the win, 30 points is a bonus.

i think this is pretty good.

I feel like the lions are going to go on a big run.

I think we will be 6th to 8th. Possibly even just falling out of the 8.

Lost my shit at the game when this happened. Especially when they paid WC a similar 'mark' later on.
it was hard to take. It's so ****ing stupid because all you have to do is control the mark. There's no requirement for it to be for a period of time. Wright absolutely controlled that mark, until it was knocked out. Should have been paid every day of the week. Then, a bit later, a WC player doesn't control it, yet gets paid. Infuriating

See 50m paid for that on a regular basis.

Not to mention it was knocked out by Gov hitting 2MP's arm, i.e. chopping of the arms.

Yep - couldn't believe it when I saw it and that was a 3 on 1 and we were out the back too. Instead the goose umpiring decides it's play on and of course it leads to a shot on goal that gets converted by the opposition. I know we had Matthew Nichols umpiring and he was not very good but this was some other clown just making shit up on the day.
